This paper investigates the combined potential of neuromorphic and edge computing to develop a flexible machine learning (ML) system designed for processing data from dynamic vision sensors. We build and train hybrid models that integrate spiking neural networks (SNNs) and artificial neural networks (ANNs) using the PyTorch and Lava frameworks. We explore the effects of quantization on ANN models to assess its impact on both accuracy and energy efficiency. Additionally, we address the challenges of deploying hybrid models on hardware by implementing individual components on specific edge platforms. We also propose an accumulator circuit to bridge the spiking and non-spiking …

Sustainability-oriented solutions are essential to address the depletion of natural resources, solid waste accumulation, and high CO2 emissions in the construction industry. This research focuses on the development of environmentally friendly green bricks by replacing high-carbon-footprint constituents with local, natural materials. Specifically, flax shives, a natural agricultural by-product, and marble powder, an industrial waste, were used as partial substitutes in the binder matrix. The natural fibers not only promote sustainability but also enhance insulation and reduce the environmental burden. The bricks were molded into rectangular specimens (60 × 100 × 200 mm) and tested for thermal conductivity, moisture absorption, and …

Early and accurate wildfire detection is critical for minimizing environmental damage and ensuring a timely response. However, existing satellite-based wildfire datasets suffer from limitations such as coarse ground truth, poor spectral coverage, and class imbalance, which hinder progress in developing robust segmentation models. In this paper, we introduce Land8Fire, a new large-scale wildfire segmentation dataset composed of over 20,000 multispectral image patches derived from Landsat 8 and manually annotated for high-quality fire masks. Building on the ActiveFire dataset, Land8Fire improves ground truth reliability and offers predefined splits for consistent benchmarking. We evaluate a range of state-of-the-art convolutional and transformer-based models, …

Colorado River users are now discussing dividing river flow on a percentage basis (Fleck, 2025; Hager, 2025, Winslow, 2025). This is an important step to managing a declining and more volatile supply. In our prior May 2025 post, we shared a strategy we have worked on for several years— division of river flow—as one of 13 reasons why we have hope for consensus on Colorado River management. In this post, we address the question: How extreme low river flow and reservoir storage should we plan for going forward (Figure 1)? We also share our insights from numerically stabilizing and recovering …

The efficiency and electricity production of a solar photovoltaic (PV) system are significantly influenced by the temperature of the PV module. Numerous studies have incorporated nanomaterials into phase change materials (PCM) integrated with PV systems to enhance thermodynamic performance; however, life-cycle aspects and the 7E sustainability indicators remain largely unaddressed. No study has yet explored paraffin wax hybridized with Al2O3 and graphene nanomaterials in specific ratios within a photovoltaic thermal (PVT) and fin system at an optimal fluid flow rate. Three different scenarios have been explored in this study, including a PVT/PCM system with a water-flowing fluid, a PVT/Fin arrangements/hybrid …

A revised derivation of the discharge coefficient for flows over thin weirs and sills in the limits of wall overflow to a free overfall is given. Using dimensional analysis, we show that the discharge coefficient, (Formula presented), in the classical weir-discharge equation is best understood as a weir Froude number, (Formula presented), which accounts for the combined effects of inertia, contraction and viscous energy losses within the flow field. A comprehensive set of experimental data from historical studies is complimented by new data from the authors, featuring both laboratory flume experiments and three-dimensional numerical simulations of weir flows. This study prepared gradient pore structure ceramics from silica fume through direct foaming. The rheological behavior of the slurry was improved by varying the solids content. Physical and mathematical models were developed to describe the longitudinal movement of foam in the ceramic slurry and the mechanism of gradient pore formation. These models were used to predict the pore sizes at different heights within the ceramic. Insulation and mechanical properties were enhanced by optimizing the gradient pore structure. The gradient pore structure resulted in significant directional differences in specimen properties. Additionally, suitable sintering-temperatures for gradient pore structure ceramics are discussed. Knowing how much oil was released into the environment in each incident is critical to studying the environmental, ecological, and economic impacts of oil spills. However, the release amounts (RAs) for numerous oil spill incidents remain unavailable in a structured format for large-scale analysis. The most extensive global oil spill database, managed by NOAA’s Office of Response and Restoration, only documents the worst-case scenario estimations in the machine-readable dataset, while more accurate values are embedded within unstructured incident descriptions and subsequent updates. To enhance the dataset with more accurate RAs, we developed a framework to extract the actual RAs from …

The use of multimodal data to understand and support collaborative learning has grown in popularity recently as it allows researchers to study complex learning tasks from different facets. However, multimodal analysis is often computationally complex and often requires a strong set of technical skills and mathematical understanding to clean and process the data, creating barriers that restrict researchers without advanced programming skills from conducting these analyses. There are existing software packages that can help with this process, but they are often piecemeal requiring the user to understand how to put them together and what best practices may entail. This can …

Genetic Algorithm Optimization To Maximize Sensitivity Of Triboelectric Mems Accelerometers, Yu Tian, Benyamin Davaji, Shahrzad Towfighian
Mechanical Engineering Faculty Scholarship
A genetic algorithm is used to optimize the sensitivity of a triboelectric MEMS accelerometer fabricated using CMOS-compatible processes. The optimization focuses on the structural parameters of an awl-shaped serpentine microspring (ASSM) connected to the proof mass. Constraints are defined by microfabrication standards and the available chip area. Three different constraint problems are considered, and the algo- rithm yields designs with maximized sensitivity in each case. Simulations under various sinusoidal vibration scenarios show that the optimized designs significantly outperform the previous version, achieving a 2.72× improvement at 1000 Hz and up to 20× at 500 Hz.

This paper explores the embedding of a Fourier-Feature—enhanced multiplayer perceptron(MLP-FEE) at the heart of a newly refactored python workflow for four-dimensional cardiac-MRI strain quantification demonstrating how a single, compact network can outperform traditional convolution and spline-based methods. The original code, capable of orientation normalization, displacement tracking, and finite-difference strain computation, has been translated and consolidated into pytorch. By injecting sinusoidal positional encodings at the network’s input layer supplied a rich set of high-frequency basis functions hence enabling multilayer MLP to resolve gradients that cubic splines and conventional CNNs typically blur or struggle with. Profiling on an Apple-silicon GPU shows interactive …

Event-based vision sensors (EVSs), often referred to as neuromorphic cameras, operate by responding to changes in brightness on a pixel-by-pixel basis. In contrast, traditional framing cameras employ some fixed sampling interval where integrated intensity is read off the entire focal plane at once. Similar to traditional cameras, EVSs can suffer loss of sensitivity through scenes with high intensity and dynamic clutter, reducing the ability to see points of interest through traditional event processing means. This paper describes a method to reduce the negative impacts of these types of EVS clutter and enable more robust target detection through the use of …

Silicon carbide (SiC) ceramic matrix composites are widely used in aerospace applications due to their high strength, heat resistance, and corrosion resistance. However, traditional machining methods make it challenging to fabricate complex shapes. This study presents a solvent-free and binder-free direct ink writing (DIW) method for producing SiC/SiOC composites using polycarbosilane SMP-10, a preceramic polymer that acts as both the ceramic precursor and the liquid phase, thereby eliminating the need for volatile solvents and sacrificial binders. By adjusting the SiC content, printable ink formulations were developed, and their flow properties were analyzed. The influence of geometric factors, such as inter-wall …

Poly(N-isopropylacryamide) microgels (PNIPAM MGs) are interesting model colloids with remarkable self-ordering properties. Metal halide perovskites (MHPs) are solution processable semiconductors that have attracted great interest for optoelectronics applications. Very few studies have considered complex co-crystallizing systems and their effects on structural order formation. This work examines PNIPAM MG ordering within a MHP matrix and investigates whether these pure PNIPAM MGs could form arrays on the MHP surface, passivate MHP defects and provide structurally colored films and solar cells.Experiments

Postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome (POTS) is a form of dysautonomia characterized by a heart rate (HR) increase ≥30 beats/minute (bpm) within 10 minutes of standing from a supine position, without a significant blood pressure drop. POTS can diminish quality of life with symptoms including tachycardia, headaches, and fatigue. Despite established diagnostic criteria, POTS is often underrecognized or misdiagnosed due to its episodic nature. Symptoms may not consistently be present during diagnostic testing, leading to false negatives during in-office testing. Wearables offer a promising solution through continuous physiological monitoring. Individuals with hypermobile Ehler-Danlos Syndrome (hEDS), a population in which POTS is …

Effective monitoring of reinforced concrete structures requires techniques that detect early-stage material change and active, localized cracking. This study investigates a combined structural health monitoring approach using passive acoustic emission and active ultrasonic methods on a full-scale reinforced concrete bridge column subjected to reverse-cyclic lateral loading. Active monitoring, based on coda wave interferometry, was used to track changes in wave velocity and waveforms, while passive acoustic emission monitoring was used to detect crack activity. The instrumentation consisted of three embedded ultrasonic transducers and three surface-mounted acoustic emission sensors. The results show that active ultrasonic monitoring is most effective prior to …

Despite advances in lithium-ion battery technology, critical challenges remain that must be addressed to accelerate electric vehicle (EV) adoption and global energy transformation. Significantly improved battery thermal management (BTM) is key to overcoming these challenges. BTM approaches focus on increasing heat transfer coefficients via air, liquid, or refrigerant cooling, but less attention is given to reducing the battery's thermal resistance, a major bottleneck for heat transfer. This work introduces a novel approach to reduce battery thermal resistance by integrating in-plane heat transfer with optimized cell geometry, minimized thermal resistances, and reduced interfacial resistances, representing a departure from previous methods. The electrification of transportation plays a central role in the decarbonization of energy systems. Although electric vehicles (EVs) are expected to reduce energy related emissions, the increasing demand imposed by large scale EV adoption presents serious challenges for distribution systems (DSs), which were not originally designed to accommodate such loads. This study proposes a mixed integer quadratically constrained programming (MIQCP) framework to optimize the operation of an EV parking lot (EVPL) under DS constraints. The model compares three widely adopted objective functions: minimization of active power loss, charging cost, and uncontrolled charging impact, which is represented by minimizing the total …

This study investigates the combined influence of superabsorbent polymers (SAPs) with distinct absorption kinetics and extended mixing sequences on the rheological, mechanical, and transport properties of high-performance concrete (HPC). Two SAPs—an ionic acrylamide-co-acrylic acid copolymer (SAP-P) and a non-ionic acrylamide polymer (SAP-B)—were incorporated at an internal curing level of 100%. The impact of extended mixing times (3, 5, and 7 min) following SAP addition was systematically evaluated. Results showed that longer mixing durations led to increased superplasticizer demand and higher plastic viscosity due to continued water absorption by SAPs. However, yield stress remained relatively stable owing to the dispersing effect …

A global increase in the frequency, severity, and scale of extreme heat raises concerns about human vulnerability to climate change and associated mortality. Heat vulnerability and mortality have largely been studied separately, lacking an understanding of their causation. Here, we create a non-parametric generalized inference approach that links socioeconomic, environmental, and infrastructure factors articulated in vulnerability theory and heat mortality between 2010 and 2020 for counties across the United States. We find that the lack of vegetation coverages drives mortality in the Southern U.S. and among Hispanic people. Limited air conditioning is a key factor in heat-related mortality among White …
