Effect Of Anisotropic Hydraulic Conductivity On Groundwater Seepage Into A Rectangular Tunnel In Submerged Sand, Deki Yangzom Ghaley, Sanjay Kumar Shukla Jul 2026

Effect Of Anisotropic Hydraulic Conductivity On Groundwater Seepage Into A Rectangular Tunnel In Submerged Sand, Deki Yangzom Ghaley, Sanjay Kumar Shukla

Research outputs 2022 to 2026

Managing groundwater seepage around tunnels is critical to tunnel design, particularly when the tunnel is constructed below the water table. Accurate seepage flow patterns and water inflow prediction under ordinary and critical conditions are imperative to mitigate potential tunnel construction and service disasters. In the past, an in-depth study on the anisotropic hydraulic conductivity of the soil mass that may affect the seepage condition has not been carried out. In this work, this aspect has been investigated numerically for a rectangular tunnel submerged within a homogeneous sand mass, considering the anisotropic hydraulic conductivity ratio (kz / kx, kz = vertical …

Sliding Mode Control In Grid-Tied Inverters: Techniques, Applications, And Future Directions, Taimoor Muzaffar Gondal, Asma Aziz, Daryoush Habibi, Iftekhar Ahmad

Research outputs 2022 to 2026

Sliding mode control (SMC) has emerged as a robust and adaptive strategy for grid-tied inverters. It has unique attributes which make it an appropriate control choice under increasingly complex power systems. However, there are a limited number of review articles which comprehensively explore the true potential of SMC for grid-tied inverter applications. This systematic review has been structured to explore SMC techniques with respect to certain challenges, i.e., stability challenges, unbalanced conditions, low inertia scenarios, and harmonics distortion. The classification of various SMC techniques is presented with respect to their control law and sliding surfaces design. The comparative analysis indicates …

Sputtered Transport Layers Enabling Ambient-Air Processed Cspbi3 Perovskite Solar Cells, Shamik Datta, Md Abdul Kuddus Sheikh, Md Shazarul Islam, Mohammed Jasim Uddin, Hasina Huq

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

Perovskite solar cells offer promising efficiency compared to traditional technologies. In this study, NiOx and ZnO were employed as charge transport layers using a magnetron sputtering process within a p-i-n architecture (ITO/NiOx/CsPbI3/ZnO/Au). This approach produced uniform, low-defect interfaces and supports low-temperature, scalable fabrication suitable for flexible substrates. Our investigation, using techniques such as X-Ray Diffraction (XRD), UV-Visible spectroscopy, Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), and Atomic Force Microscope (AFM), revealed the formation of uniform layers deposited by the magnetron sputtering process. The photoactive CsPbI3 layer was deposited via a spin coating solution process. UV-Visible spectroscopy revealed strong absorbance in the wavelength range …

Optimal Co2 Storage Interval In Heterogeneous Tight Formation: Implications For Long-Term Carbon Sequestration, Yujie Yuan, Yuxin Cao, Emad A. Al-Khdheeawi, Maxim Lebedev, Zhenjiang You, Reza Rezaee, Stefan Iglauer, Lai Chang Zhang, Zhuo Feng

Research outputs 2022 to 2026

The efficiency of CO2 geo-sequestration relies heavily on the storage capacity and sealing integrity of the heterogeneous strata. Tight formations offer substantial advantages for long-term CO2 geological storage, however, the stratigraphic variability and lithological heterogeneity introduce substantial uncertainty in real-world engineering applications. Particularly, for tight formations with pronounced heterogeneous lithologies, traditional methods oversimplify their impact on CO2 geo-sequestration. To address this challenge and identify the most effective intervals for CO2 geo-sequestration, we investigated the middle Permian Lucaogou Formation (P2l) in the Jimusar Sag, Junggar Basin, Northwest China, a region known for its strong lithological heterogeneity. By integrating multi-scale analytical techniques, …

Design And Evaluation Of A Distributed Ticket Booking System Using Cqrs And Hybrid Consistency Models, Tai Nguyen Vo, Sangwhan Cha Jul 2026

Design And Evaluation Of A Distributed Ticket Booking System Using Cqrs And Hybrid Consistency Models, Tai Nguyen Vo, Sangwhan Cha

Harrisburg University Other Works

This paper presents the design and evaluation of a Distributed Ticket Booking System (DTBS) built to handle extreme concurrency in high-traffic digital environments. Motivated by real-world failures such as the 2022 Taylor Swift Eras Tour sale—where 14 million simultaneous requests overwhelmed Ticketmaster—the system addresses the fundamental conflict between strong consistency and high availability under massive demand. The proposed solution adopts the Command Query Responsibility Segregation (CQRS) pattern to decouple read and write operations, and applies a hybrid consistency model grounded in the CAP theorem: a CP-oriented booking subsystem with Redis-based distributed locking, and an AP-oriented search subsystem using Elasticsearch for …

Late-Night And Early-Morning Train Scheduling With Non-Traffic Hour Maintenance Window In Urban Rail Transit Systems, Yaochen Ma, Hai Yang, Hai Wang Jul 2026

Late-Night And Early-Morning Train Scheduling With Non-Traffic Hour Maintenance Window In Urban Rail Transit Systems, Yaochen Ma, Hai Yang, Hai Wang

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Regular maintenance during non-traffic hours (NTH) is vital for the resilience of urban rail transit (URT) systems, yet an insufficient NTH maintenance window poses a challenge for URT systems in various cities. For instance, the Hong Kong MTR Corporation has noted that the required NTH maintenance time often exceeds the available window, prompting service adjustments such as earlier late-night closures and/or later early-morning starts. To address this challenge, this study develops an optimal scheduling framework that links late-night and early-morning URT services through the NTH maintenance window requirement to maximize public welfare. A Decoupled Optimization Model (DOM) first derives closed-form …

Jme 4110: Drill-Powered Beach Umbrella Anchor, Matthew Barton, Tanin Ramnath, Marquan Bailey, Zachary Van-Horn, Kaelin Mendoza

Washington University / UMSL Mechanical Engineering Design Project JME 4110

A common and potentially hazardous situation faced by beachgoers is when standard umbrella anchors fail to hold during wind gusts, causing the umbrella to potentially go airborne and injure nearby people. Existing anchors require manual operation, leading to inconsistent grip and no resistance to different wind directions. Our project is a motorized three anchor system that drives augers into the sand to ensure a consistent grip and security against the wind.

Constrained Assortment Optimization Under The Mixed-Logit Model, Hoang Giang Pham, Tien Mai Jul 2026

Constrained Assortment Optimization Under The Mixed-Logit Model, Hoang Giang Pham, Tien Mai

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

In this paper, we study the assortment optimization problem under the mixed-logit customer choice model. While assortment optimization has been a central topic in revenue management for decades, the mixed-logit model is widely regarded as one of the most general and flexible frameworks for modeling and predicting customer purchasing behavior. The assortment optimization problem is known to be NP-hard to be approximated to any constant factor, even in the unconstrained case. To address this challenge, we first explore the submodularity properties of a simplified version of the objective function to derive novel semi-constant factor approximation solutions for assortment problems under …

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) are increasingly deployed in safety-critical applications such as logistics, surveillance, disaster response, and urban air mobility. While their autonomy enables powerful capabilities, it also introduces vulnerabilities due to hardware faults, software defects, communication failures, and adversarial interference. This survey presents a comprehensive review of research studies closely related to UAV anomalies published between 2015 and 2025, covering 111 papers from academic and industrial sources. We introduce a unified five-pillar taxonomy—anomaly generation, prevention, detection, recovery, and analysis—that organizes existing work across the full anomaly management lifecycle. In contrast to prior surveys that focus primarily on detection algorithms, …

Robust Generator Maintenance Schedule For Frequency-Secure Power Systems, Yang Yang, Qiuzhuang Sun, Jimmy Chih-Hsien Peng, Loon Ching Tang, Zhisheng Ye Jul 2026

Robust Generator Maintenance Schedule For Frequency-Secure Power Systems, Yang Yang, Qiuzhuang Sun, Jimmy Chih-Hsien Peng, Loon Ching Tang, Zhisheng Ye

Research Collection College of Integrative Studies

Problem definition: Normal operations of a power system require that alternating current frequency be maintained at a nominal value, for example, 50 Hz, whereas severe deviation from this value due to power deficiencies can cause cascading generator trips. Maintaining the frequency requires adequate inertia and frequency regulation reserve, which are primarily provided by online generators. In daily operations, generators due for preventive maintenance must be taken offline, and thus an improper maintenance schedule could jeopardize frequency security, as exemplified by the recent Texas power blackout. However, this natural nexus between frequency security and maintenance has been over-looked largely in the …

Online Planning Of Power Flows For Power Systems Against Bushfires Using Spatial Context, Jianyu Xu, Qiuzhuang Sun, Yang Yang, Huadong Mo, Daoyi Dong Jul 2026

Online Planning Of Power Flows For Power Systems Against Bushfires Using Spatial Context, Jianyu Xu, Qiuzhuang Sun, Yang Yang, Huadong Mo, Daoyi Dong

Research Collection College of Integrative Studies

A power station or transmission line can be affected due to bushfires, increasing operation costs. We study a fundamental but challenging problem of planning the optimal power flow (OPF) for power systems under bushfires. We develop a model to capture the stochastic nature of bushfire spread based on Moore’s neighborhood model and propose an online optimization modeling framework to sequentially plan power flows in the electricity network. Our framework assumes that bushfire spread is non-stationary over time and that the spread and containment probabilities are unknown. To address these challenges, we develop a contextual online learning algorithm that treats the …

Monitoring And Short-Term Forecasting Of Atmospheric Air Pollutants Using Deep Neural Networks, Prasanjit Dey Jul 2026

Monitoring And Short-Term Forecasting Of Atmospheric Air Pollutants Using Deep Neural Networks, Prasanjit Dey

Dissertations

Accurate forecasting of near-surface atmospheric air pollutants such as PM2.5, NO2, SO2, CO, and O3 remains a critical scientific and societal challenge. This difficulty arises from several factors, including nonlinear pollutant dynamics, sparse ground monitoring net works, heterogeneous satellite observations, and strong cross-pollutant interdependencies. Substantial advances have been achieved in temporal deep learning, probabilistic modeling, satellite-based estimation, physics-informed methods, and foundation models. However, these paradigms have largely evolved in isolation. As a result, existing systems are often station-dependent or pollutant-specific and optimized for a single forecasting task. This limits their robustness and generalizability across regions and heterogeneous data regimes.

Vehicle Autonomy To Ecosystem Intelligence: A Systematic Review Of Dynamic Vision Architectures In Surface Mining Operations, Nana Yaa Damtewaa Anti, Samuel Frimpong, Muhammad Azeem Raza

Mining Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Autonomous Haulage Systems (AHS) have significantly transformed surface mining operations by improving safety, productivity, and operational consistency. Currently, AHS predominantly rely on vehicle-centric perception architectures. Onboard LiDAR, radar, cameras, and Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS) perform sensing, interpretation, and decision-making within individual systems. These processes enable collision avoidance and path tracking. However, they are limited in their ability to consider the broader, dynamic mining environment characterized by dust, terrain degradation, geotechnical instability, heterogeneous traffic, and rapidly evolving operational conditions. This paper presents a systematic review of dynamic vision systems of AHS in surface mining. It critically analyzes the transition from …

Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works

The herpes simplex virus 1 (HSV-1) US3 is a multifunctional serine/threonine kinase that promotes HSV-1 replication and spread. But its role and the mechanisms by which US3 regulates actin cytoskeletal remodeling remain poorly defined. We combined flow cytometry, confocal microscopy, immunoprecipitation-mass spectrometry (IP-MS), protein complex mapping, and machine learning to characterize US3-mediated F-actin dynamics. Flow cytometry and confocal microscopy showed that wild-type HSV-1 induces significant F-actin remodeling, while the ΔUS3 mutant displays F-actin levels comparable to uninfected cells, identifying US3 as a key regulator. IP-MS identified 47 high-confidence US3 interactors enriched in conserved actin regulatory complexes, including Arp2/3 nucleation machinery, …

A System Dynamics Model For Analyzing Customer Satisfaction Drivers In A Manufacturing Context, Mahnaz Asgari Sooran, Venkat Allada, Adewole Adegbola

Engineering Management and Systems Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Customer satisfaction offers economic benefits and competitive advantage to manufacturing enterprises. However, a gap exists in understanding how to achieve customer satisfaction due to the complexities involved in coordinating various subsystems of an enterprise in an efficient manner. In this paper, we identified four internal and external-to-the-firm customer satisfaction drivers which include: government policies, supply chain reliability, knowledge management, and manufacturing performance criteria such as on-time delivery, quality and cost. We then developed a conceptual framework to define the non-linear mathematical relationships between drivers using system dynamics modeling. We conducted "what-if "scenario analyses for a base case, optimistic case and …

Materials Science and Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

High-entropy carbides are promising candidates for extreme-temperature environments, but their grain-boundary chemistry remains difficult to resolve because segregation involves both chemical disorder and finite-temperature configurational sampling. Here, we quantify temperature-dependent grain-boundary segregation in high-entropy carbides using a universal message-passing atomic cluster expansion (MACE) machine learning interatomic potential combined with a hybrid Monte Carlo–molecular dynamics workflow. A 53.1 (Formula presented.) (Formula presented.) symmetric tilt grain boundary was sampled for six representative high-entropy carbide compositions containing group IV, V, and VI transition metals at 300 and 2000 K. Element-resolved metal-sublattice composition profiles reveal composition-dependent segregation modes. Several chemistries exhibit selective near-boundary enrichment …

Thiol-Based Neuroprotective Copolymers Acutely Restore Redox Metabolism And Mediate Vasogenic Edema In A Mouse Model Of Traumatic Brain Injury, Evan T. Curtis, Brandon Z. Mcdonald, Aria W. Tarudji, Aaron M. Priester, Anthony J. Convertine, Forrest M. Kievit

Materials Science and Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Effective pharmaceutical interventions for treating the secondary damage associated with traumatic brain injury (TBI) are limited due to poor delivery into the brain, insufficient target engagement, and an incomplete understanding of the pathophysiological changes that occur post-impact. Thus, nanoparticles (NP), which have an enhanced permeation and retention-like effect within the perturbed blood-brain barrier, have grown as a potential candidate for treating TBI. We have investigated the antioxidant capacity of thiol-based NP, termed neuroprotective copolymers (NPC3), and their ability to neutralize reactive oxygen species (ROS) and lipid peroxidation products (LPOx). Here, we assessed the efficacy of NPC3 for alleviating the secondary …

Transcutaneous spinal cord stimulation (tSCS) is a promising neuromodulation approach for motor recovery after spinal cord injury (SCI), yet clinical programming remains largely dependent on subjective parameter selection. This study evaluated high-density surface EMG (HD-sEMG)–derived spatial and temporal features as objective biomarkers for tSCS optimization in three adults with chronic cervical SCI. A 64-channel electrode array recorded stimulation-evoked responses across five cervical stimulation levels, four pulse widths, and graded amplitudes. Features describing activation magnitude, spatial distribution, cluster morphology, and temporal dynamics were extracted from epoch-based activation maps. Of the three enrolled participants, two demonstrated measurable stimulation-evoked responses and contributed to …

Evaluation Of A Vortex Flow Device On A Center Pivot Irrigation System, Ankit Chandra, Derek M. Heeren, Tyler Smith

Department of Agricultural and Biological Systems Engineering: Presentations and White Papers

This study presents the first independent field evaluation of a passive vortex flow device designed to reduce hydraulic friction in pressurized irrigation systems. Experiments were conducted on a full-scale, groundwater-fed center pivot irrigation system at the Eastern Nebraska Research, Extension, and Education Center (ENREEC). A paired comparison approach was used to quantify differences in flow rate, energy consumption, and pressure distribution along the pivot lateral under baseline (no device) and treatment (device installed) conditions. Results showed negligible change in system flow rate (621 vs. 618 gpm) and energy consumption (~1.2% difference), consistent with expectations for pressure-regulated irrigation systems. However, the …

Coupled Multiphysics Transport-Reaction Modeling Framework For Combustion Synthesis Of Cement Phases: Insights Into Β-C2s Formation And Wavefront Dynamics, Sayee Srikarah Volaity, Shubham Agrawal, Aditya Kumar, Narayanan Neithalath Jun 2026

Coupled Multiphysics Transport-Reaction Modeling Framework For Combustion Synthesis Of Cement Phases: Insights Into Β-C2s Formation And Wavefront Dynamics, Sayee Srikarah Volaity, Shubham Agrawal, Aditya Kumar, Narayanan Neithalath

Materials Science and Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Biofuel-based combustion synthesis (BCS) processes offer low-temperature, low-carbon routes to lime and clinker production. However, they involve tightly coupled interactions between heat transfer, gas flow, and sequential solid-state reactions within reactive pellets. Experiments typically provide surface temperature evolution and final phase assemblages but give limited insight into the conversion process and the interaction between composition and process conditions. A coupled transport-reaction framework is developed here to resolve this limitation─the synthesis of β-C2S (belite), a major cementing phase, serving as an example. Transient conservation equations for energy, momentum, and species are solved for a porous pellet exchanging heat and mass with …

Review And Development Of An Explicit Machine Learning Model For Pollutant Gas Solubility In Ionic Liquids As Green Solvents, Amir Dashti, Farid Amirkhani, Mojtaba Raji, John L. Zhou, Ali Altaee, Ali Braytee, Brett Turner, Hossein Ali Khonakdar, Amir Razmjou

Research outputs 2022 to 2026

The increasing release of greenhouse gases (GHGs) like CO₂, CH₄, N₂O, and industrial contaminants (indirect GHGs) such as SO₂ and H₂S has prompted significant global worries due to their role in climate change, air pollution, and harm to the environment. Ionic liquids (ILs) as green solvents have emerged as promising alternatives to traditional solvents because of their minimal volatility, high thermal stability, and adjustable physicochemical characteristics. Yet, limited gas solubility data in ILs is hindering their applications in carbon capture and air pollution control. Machine learning (ML) is a powerful tool for modeling and simulating the solubility of polluting gases …

Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Toxic fumes emitted during the construction and maintenance of hot-mix asphalt mixtures represent a significant challenge for both the environment and construction workers. To reduce the generation of these toxic fumes, nano-sepiolite (NSEP, a natural mineral) powder was incorporated into base asphalt (BA), styrene-butadiene-styrene (SBS) -modified asphalt (SBSA), and crumb rubber-modified asphalt (CRA) to formulate sepiolite-modified asphalt binders. The rheological properties of these NSEP-modified asphalts were evaluated using dynamic shear rheometer (DSR) and bending beam rheometer (BBR) tests. Subsequently, smoke density tests and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) were utilized to analyze the quantity and composition of the volatile organic compounds …

Long-Term Shoreline Evolution And Anthropogenic Impact: Evidence From 76 Years Of Coastal Change In Mazagón, Spain, M. Fernández-Hernández, M. Pastor, L. Iglesias, R. Castedo, K. S. Sajinkumar

Michigan Tech Publications

The Mazagón coast (Huelva, southwestern Spain) illustrates the strong imprint of anthropogenic interventions on shoreline dynamics. This study evaluates its evolution between 1946 and 2022 by digitizing historical shorelines from aerial photographs and quantifying changes through three complementary indicators: Net Shoreline Movement (NSM), End Point Rate (EPR), and Linear Regression Rate (LRR). Statistical analyses (ANOVA and Tukey’s test) were performed to assess differences between pre- and post-construction phases of the Juan Carlos I breakwater. The results indicate a prevailing erosive trend, with mean retreat rates of − 1.4 m/yr and localized shoreline losses exceeding 100 m. Prior to the breakwater, …

Laminarin-Loaded Solid-In-Oil Nanodispersion For Enhanced Non-Invasive Transdermal Immunization, Md. Shahin Ekka Sarker, Yoshirou Kawaguchi, Rie C. Wakabayashi, Noriho J. Kamiya, Muhammad Moniruzzaman, Masahiro Goto Jun 2026

Laminarin-Loaded Solid-In-Oil Nanodispersion For Enhanced Non-Invasive Transdermal Immunization, Md. Shahin Ekka Sarker, Yoshirou Kawaguchi, Rie C. Wakabayashi, Noriho J. Kamiya, Muhammad Moniruzzaman, Masahiro Goto

Publications and Research

Simple and non-invasive transdermal vaccination is an attractive alternative to conventional injection-based immunization. However, the effectiveness of transdermal vaccines is often constrained by the stratum corneum barrier. Although the use of solid-in-oil (S/O) nanodispersion technology has successfully facilitated skin permeation to induce an immunological response, the antibody titers remain suboptimal. Herein, a dectin-1 selective ligand, laminarin, was used as an immunostimulatory adjuvant to enhance the immune response. S/O nanodispersions loaded with laminarin and ovalbumin (OVA) were systematically developed and characterized in terms of particle size, in vitro OVA release behavior, and skin permeation performance using excised mouse skin. In vivo …
