An Experimental Study Of Planar Heterogeneous Supersonic Confined Jets, Frederick J. Tanis Jr.
An Experimental Study Of Planar Heterogeneous Supersonic Confined Jets, Frederick J. Tanis Jr.
Theses and Dissertations
The effects of varying the exit pressure of a supersonic helium jet exhausting coaxially with two parallel supersonic air streams into a constant area duct were investigated. The method used to evaluate the mass entrainment rate was to measure helium molar concentration profiles and mass flux across the duct using a binary gas probe then calculate the mass entrainment into the helium jet. In order to conduct this study a novel binary gas probe was developed which allowed helium concentration and mass flux data to be obtained during continuous traverses across the supersonic flowfield. High exit pressure ratio (EPR) led …
The Enhanced Performance Of An Integrated Navigation System In A Highly Dynamic Environment, Brian J. Bohenek
The Enhanced Performance Of An Integrated Navigation System In A Highly Dynamic Environment, Brian J. Bohenek
Theses and Dissertations
For the U.S. Air Force to maintain an accurate and reliable Navigation Reference System (NRS) with Carrier-Phase Global Positioning System (CPGPS) measurements, it must develop an accurate and robust NRS in the face of cycle slips caused by highly dynamic maneuvers. This research investigates the implementation of a double differencing between receivers-satellites scheme to improve the accuracy of current NRS models. The removal of the 'perfect Doppler velocity aiding measurements' (a very poor assumption of past research) was completed with stable and accurate results. The double differencing implemented showed improvement in the accuracy of the NRS. An investigation of two …
An Integrated Gps-Ins-Baro And Radar Altimeter System For Aircraft Precision Approach Landings, Robert A. Gray
An Integrated Gps-Ins-Baro And Radar Altimeter System For Aircraft Precision Approach Landings, Robert A. Gray
Theses and Dissertations
Currently, the Department of Defense (DoD) and the commercial airline industry are utilizing the Instrument Landing System (ILS) during aircraft landings for precision approaches. The replacement system for the aging ILS was thought to he the Microwave Landing System (MLS). Instead, use of the Global Positioning System (GPS) is now thought to be a viable replacement for ILS precision approaches. The majority of current precision landing research has exploited 'stand-alone' GPS receiver techniques. This thesis instead explores the possibilities of using an extended Kalman filter (EKF) that integrates an Inertial Navigation System (INS), GPS, Barometric Altimeter, Pseudolite and Radar Altimeter …
Analysis And Simulation Of Narrowband Gps Jamming Using Digital Excision Temporal Filtering, Gerald L. Falen
Analysis And Simulation Of Narrowband Gps Jamming Using Digital Excision Temporal Filtering, Gerald L. Falen
Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this thesis is to investigate the performance of the Digital Excision Temporal Filter (DETF) to reject narrowband jammers used against the Global Positioning System (GPS). The DETF takes the Fast Fourier Transform (FFT) of the GPS signal and excises any FFT bins that are above a preselected threshold level. Then the excised signal is Inverse Fourier Transformed and fed to the GPS receiver. Several jammer types are simulated including Continuous Wave (CW), Pulse CW, Swept CW, Narrowband Spot Noise, and Wideband Barrage Noise jammers. Cases are also simulated using all but the Wideband Barrage Noise jammer at …

Control Of A Large Space Structure Using Multiple Model Adaptive Estimation And Control Techniques, Gordon C. Griffin Jr.
Theses and Dissertations
A moving bank multiple model adaptive estimator-controller (MMAE-MMAC), based on linear system, quadratic cost, and Gaussian noise (LQG) assumptions, is used to quell unwanted vibrations in a large flexible space structure. The structure, known as the SPace Integrated Controls Experiment, or SPICE, exists at Phillips Laboratory, Kirtland AFB, NM. The structure consists of a large platform and a smaller platform connected by a tripod of flexible legs. The purpose of the control system is to maintain a very precise line-of- sight vector through the center of the spacecraft. Kalman filtering, used to estimate the position and velocity of the bending …
Flow Visualization Of A Turbulent Shear Flow Using An Optical Wavefront Sensor, Daniel W. Jewell
Flow Visualization Of A Turbulent Shear Flow Using An Optical Wavefront Sensor, Daniel W. Jewell
Theses and Dissertations
The research reported here investigated the use of a shearing interferometer (SI) wavefront sensor to determine the effects of shear-layer turbulence on an optical wavefront. A collimated helium-neon laser beam was propagated through a plane shear-layer produced by mixing helium and nitrogen at different velocities. Since the gases have different indices of refraction, the optical wavefront was distorted by different amounts by each gas. The SI measured the wavefront slope across the sampled area of the wavefront. The shear-layer was viewed from two orthogonal directions. This document contains shadow graphs, interference patterns imaged by each of the SI's six cameras, …

Environmental restoration is an area of concern in an environmentally conscious world. Much effort is required to clean up the environment and promote environmentally sound methods for managing current land use. In light of the public consciousness with the latter topic, the United States Air Force must also take an active role in addressing these environmental issues with respect to current and future USAF base land use. This thesis uses the systems engineering technique to assess human health risks and to evaluate risk management options with respect to depleted uranium contamination in the sampled region of Test Area (TA) C-64 …
An Analysis Of The Kc-135 Three-Person Cockpit, Robert A. Deivert
An Analysis Of The Kc-135 Three-Person Cockpit, Robert A. Deivert
Theses and Dissertations
In an effort to quantitatively determine the utility of mission effectiveness of the KC-135, this research used value-focused thinking to measure the impact of replacing the KC-135 navigator with upgraded avionics. A Value Model was developed as a hierarchy with fundamental objectives at the highest level and attributes at the lowest level. Weights were assigned to show the contribution each level had to the one above it. The attributes were given a score and an additive model was used to determine utility with and without a navigator. Break-even analysis and net present value calculations were done to show the costs …
Optimization Of A Nutation Damper Attached To A Spin-Stabilized Satellite, Brady P. Hauboldt
Optimization Of A Nutation Damper Attached To A Spin-Stabilized Satellite, Brady P. Hauboldt
Theses and Dissertations
This study uses linearized equations of motion for a rigid body with an attached spring-mass-damper to maximize the decay rate of a satellite's coning motion. An analysis of the numerical eigenvalues is presented which leads to an optimal relationship between relevant parameters: damper placement, spring constant, damping coefficient, system moments of inertia, and damper mass fraction. The coupled system's eigenvalues do not provide truly critical damping, thus the real eigenvalue parts are minimized in order to achieve damping which requires the minimum amount of time. A comparison between this optimal design method and a classical method concludes a noticeable improvement …

Theses and Dissertations
The Air Force requires a methodology to assess alternative means for providing integrated space support data, collected from imagery space platforms, to enhance overall theater warfighting capability. This research examines imagery systems supporting the warning, surveillance, and weather missions, alternative concepts to integrate this imagery data, and models their influence on air-to-ground and limited ground-to-air combat in five potential theaters of operation. These theaters were Northeast Asia, Southeast Asia, Southeast Europe, the Caribbean, and Central America. Influence diagram decision analysis techniques were used to identify and quantify the key variables within the three space-based mission areas effecting air combat planning …
A Methodology To Assess The Utility Of Future Space Systems, Bruce Rayno
A Methodology To Assess The Utility Of Future Space Systems, Bruce Rayno
Theses and Dissertations
This research identifies the assumptions and simplifications in the SPACECAST 2020 value model and assesses modifications. The model determines and prioritizes future space systems' utility toward controlling and exploiting space. This study shows that the assumption of using an additive utility function is valid. This research shows that the mission areas are mutually utility independent allowing the use of the multiplicative utility function. This research also uses the multilinear function, which requires utility independence implied in mutual utility independence. This study makes modifications to the 98 SPACECAST 2020 measure of merit scoring functions. These scoring functions all used the same …

A Multi-Attribute-Utility-Theory Model That Minimizes Interview-Data Requirements: A Consolidation Of Space Launch Decisions, Raymond W. Staats
Theses and Dissertations
This research uses multi-attribute utility theory (MAUT) to define a mathematical representation of a decision maker's utility associated with a satellite system. While developing the survey instrument, we focused on making it simpler to administer, primarily by eliminating the use of lottery questions. These simplifications enabled us to shorten our interview with the decision maker to under two hours for a rather complex model.

A State-Space Model Of A Large, Lightly Damped Space Structure Using The Eigensystem Realization Algorithm, Robert D. Woods
A State-Space Model Of A Large, Lightly Damped Space Structure Using The Eigensystem Realization Algorithm, Robert D. Woods
Theses and Dissertations
Large, lightweight space structures of the future will require state-of-the-art vibration suppression systems. To design such a system, it is necessary to have a mathematical model that adequately describes the motion of the system. Coulomb damping compensation was utilized to remove a known nonlinearity from the frequency response functions obtained from the Passive and Active Control of Space Structures (PACOSS) Dynamic Test Article (DTA). Via the Eigensystem Realization algorithm (ERA), the frequency response functions were then used to generate a mathematical representation of the structure's dynamics. Two models were obtained. The first model, without friction compensation, acted as a baseline. …

Computing Norad Mean Orbital Elements From A State Vector, Dwight E. Andersen
Computing Norad Mean Orbital Elements From A State Vector, Dwight E. Andersen
Theses and Dissertations
NORAD maintains and disseminates mean orbital elements on Earth-orbiting satellites in the form of Two-Line Element Sets (TLE). Five mathematical propagator models were developed for NORAD's use to predict the position and velocity using TLEs. This study investigated two approaches, Newton's method and direct iteration, to inverting this process by iterating to obtain NORAD-compatible mean orbital elements from a position and velocity state vector and the drag term. The Newton's iteration method was developed but not tested. The less computationally intensive direct iteration method was developed, coded in FORTRAN, and tested. The initial guess and subsequent corrections in the iterative …

Theses and Dissertations
The frequency spectra of three single stage, high speed compressor rotors were derived and analyzed from experimental data. The compressor rotors included straight, backward-swept, and forward-swept blade designs. Data was acquired from four pressure transducers located on the compressor casing and arranged axially between locations 40% of blade chord upstream of the rotor face to just over the leading edge of the blades. Each rotor was throttled to stall at two constant speeds between 90% and 100% of design speed. Data digitization at 20 kHz revealed multiples of the rotor frequency up to and beyond a dominant blade passing frequency. …
Characterization Of Fatigue Behavior Of 2-D Woven Fabric Reinforced Ceramic Matrix Composite At Elevated Temperature, Daniel J. Groner
Characterization Of Fatigue Behavior Of 2-D Woven Fabric Reinforced Ceramic Matrix Composite At Elevated Temperature, Daniel J. Groner
Theses and Dissertations
This study investigated the fatigue behavior and associated damage mechanisms in notched and unnotched enhanced Sic-SiC ceramic matrix composite specimens at 1100°C. Stiffness degradation, strain variation, and hysteresis were evaluated to characterize material behavior. Microscopic examination was performed to characterize damage mechanisms. During high cycle-low stress fatigue tests, far less fiber-matrix interface debond was evident than in low cycle-high stress fatigue tests. Notched specimens exhibited minimal stress concentration during monotonic tensile testing and minimal notch sensitivity during fatigue testing. Damage mechanisms were also similar to unnotched.

From the mechanical behavior demonstrated by these curves, relationships between the effect of the environment and loading waveform were developed. In addition, a …
Telepresent Spacecraft Docking With Object-Based Bilateral Control (Obbc), Paul Woznick
Telepresent Spacecraft Docking With Object-Based Bilateral Control (Obbc), Paul Woznick
Theses and Dissertations
The concept of object-based control is extended to the field of teleoperation, specifically to accomplish the task of spacecraft docking via a bilateral manual controller. An object-based controller with bilateral feedback controls the motion of the grasped object, not the trajectory of the manipulator. For this reason it can be designed with feedback that is intricately linked with the task kinematics. The benefits derived from anthropomorphicity and force feedback are possible without kinematically-geometrically similar master-slave systems, complex calibration and joint mapping schemes, or expensive, high degree-of-freedom force reflection. Object-based control is ideal for low-level telerobotic interfaces. A hand controller and …

A Comparison Of The Neal-Smith And ΩSpΤΘ2, ΣSp, ΤΘ Flying Qualities Criteria, Brian A. Kish
Theses and Dissertations
Aircraft pitch response is a vital element of piloted vehicle flying qualities. There has been controversy over both the form and the substance of the requirements for short-term pitch response. Currently, MIL-STD- 1797A offers six different methods for evaluating short-term pitch response. These six methods often give conflicting results. Two methods are analyzed in this thesis - the Neal-Smith criteria and the ωspΤθ2, ςsp, τθ criteria. Domains from both criteria are mapped into each other identifying regions of conflict and regions of agreement. Parametric studies are performed and evaluated for trends. Further, a …
