Turbulent Shockwave/Boundary-Layer Interactions Generated By Sharp Swept Fins, Dustin Levi Otten Dec 2024

Turbulent Shockwave/Boundary-Layer Interactions Generated By Sharp Swept Fins, Dustin Levi Otten

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Dissertations

The shock/turbulent boundary layer interaction (STBLI) generated by a sharp fin with a 60 deg leading edge sweep mounted above a flat plate at Mach 2.5 was studied numerically. Incipient separation due to this highly swept fin was determined by varying the fin angle to the incoming freestream. The effect of a small fin/plate gap on STBLI incipient separation was established. Sweeping the fin increases the deflection required for incipient separation as the sweep reduces the interaction strength. A gap causes flow leakage under the fin, further reducing the interaction strength on the windward side. The incipient angle of attack …

Non-Intrusive Reduced Order Model Formulation For Inverse Shape Design Including Deforming Meshes And Multiphysics Problems., Kapil Aryal

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Dissertations

Despite significant advancements in computer capabilities for numerical simulations, engineers continue to face limitations when dealing with large-scale full-order model(FOM) simulations. These simulations often necessitate repeated solves, such as those encountered in inverse design, real-time solution prediction, error quantification, and solver convergence, among others. To address these challenges, reduced order modeling (ROM) has emerged as a valuable approach. This thesis focuses on the development of an ROM framework that combines Proper Orthogonal Decomposition (POD) with machine learning techniques. This integrated approach is applied to a diverse range of heat transfer and fluid flow inverse design problems. POD constructs optimal sets …

Design And Demonstration Of An Inertial-Stabilized Single-Axis Headlamp For Mobile Systems, Thomas Avery Allsup

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Dissertations

The introduction of adaptive headlamps has added left and right movement of the headlamps to enhance the vision of the driver during a turn at night. Adaptive headlamps also allow up and down motion of headlamps in either two discrete positions with low and high beams based on vehicle speed and oncoming traffic lights or using the vehicle suspension measurement to adjust headlamp beam angles in any angle between low and high. Using the vehicle suspension ignores the roadway influence on where the headlamps should be positioned to illuminate the roadway for the driver. This dissertation develops governing equations and …

Multiple Dipole Source Position And Orientation Estimation Using Non-Invasive Eeg-Like Signals, Saina Namazifard

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Dissertations

The human brain comprises of neurons that connect with each other via electrical signals. One can record and measure these activities using an electroencephalogram (EEG). An essential use of the EEG is in locating the generating source of these signals, usually approximated by dipoles. This is important because, in some particular circumstances, neurons may not function optimally and could make the equivalent dipole generate abnormal signals. This could be a result of seizures or other brain disorders. In order to isolate such disorders, the challenge is to find a non-invasive way to locate the anomalous source. This research aims to …

Molecular Dynamics Simulations Of The Spontaneous Deformation And Auxetics Behavior During Tensile Test Of A Nematic Liquid Crystal Elastomer Model, Haoran Wang, Nanang Mahardika

Browse all Datasets

Nematic liquid crystal elastomers (LCEs) are advanced materials known for their shape-changing capability in response to external stimuli such as heat, light and electromagnetic fields. This makes them excellent candidates for applications like soft robotics and energy harvesting. While studies on their physical behavior have shed light on the complex nonlinear mechanics of LCEs, investigations through all-atom molecular dynamics (MD) simulations remain an underutilized avenue compared to experimental and theoretical analyses. This limited use is primarily due to the lack of well-established frameworks for conducting high-fidelity atomistic simulations of LCEs. To bridge this gap, we introduce an all-atom MD simulation …

High Magnification Surface Topography Based Digital Image Correlation (Dic) For Identifying Damage Accumulation And Crack Growth In Polycrystalline Nickel, Arash Valiollahi

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Dissertations

Damage index parameters that have been formulated to identify damage localization in plastically deformed materials typically require all six stress or strain components. Recently, simulations through Crystal Plasticity Finite Element Method (CPFEM) have been widely used to extract damage initiation parameters. However, these models are rarely verified due to the challenges in measuring the out-of-plane deformation/strain experimentally. A damage index combining the effective plastic strain and surface roughness change is investigated for identifying damage accumulation sites and predicting crack propagation path in polycrystalline pure Nickel. A novel Digital Image Correlation (DIC) technique is developed to measure both in-plane and out-of-plane …

Throughout the years of aerospace vehicle design, the process in which a vehicle is designed has drastically improved from being primarily developed through trial and error, to using sophisticated synthesis systems. While the trial-and-error process had its uses with providing the fundamental knowledge of how aircraft behave and can be designed, the increase in knowledge and technology allowed the possibility of more vehicle configurations to be explored without the need to build each one. This increase should have led to a revolution of vehicle designs, and while there have been some novel ones, it seems that the general design of …
