In response to stagnant undergraduate completion rates and growing demands for post-secondary accountability, institutions are actively pursuing effective, broadly applicable methods for promoting student success. One notable scarcity in existing research is found in the tailoring of broad academic interventions to better meet the specific needs of students from known risk populations. The purpose of this correlational study was to investigate possible predictive relationships among three specific pre-matriculation characteristics (gender, ethnicity and secondary school type) and subsequent academic year retention for residential undergraduate students that completed a developmental education course at a private, liberal arts university. Too Much Puff, Not Enough Push? Surf Lifeguard Simulated Cpr Performance, Kevin Moran, Jonathon Webber

International Journal of Aquatic Research and Education

The purpose of this paper is to report on the technical competency of volunteer surf lifeguards to perform CPR on a manikin in light of their lifeguard experience, age, and gender. The CPR skills of surf lifeguards on patrol at the beginning of the 2010-11 summer season were tested on manikins by observation of CPR procedures and electronic recording of compression and ventilation skills. Almost all lifeguards (n=252) made the appropriate initial checks for responsiveness (98%). Compression skills were generally performed accurately with few technical errors (such as incomplete release). Most lifeguards (87%) over-ventilated the lungs (> 600ml) on each …

Case 9: Tannum Sands State High School, Australian Council For Educational Research (Acer)

Tender Bridge

Tannum Sands State High School is a school of over 980 students in the coastal town of Tannum Sands on the Central East Coast of Queensland, just over 400kms north of Brisbane. The school has been a Tender Bridge subscriber since March 2013. Community Liaison Officer Carol Shuttleworth spoke to Tender Bridge about the school’s path to securing some new sporting facilities.

Using Field Studies To Meet The Next Generation Science Standards, Amy Brown

Masters Theses

New science standards, the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS), recently have been released which require students to use modeling and other process skills and cross-cutting concepts to show understanding of core concepts. Understanding by design approach was used to develop an ecology curriculum in line with the NGSS framework, using field studies to involve students in real science. A schoolyard habitat area on Neoga School District property was used for the field studies. Students were assessed with pre- and post-tests, traditional classroom grades on labs and projects and the Modified ATSI and Children's Science Curiosity Scale. All students showed significant …

Identification Of Motivation In Senior Individuals Who Engage In The Adventure Experience Of Ice Climbing, Donald B. Briggs

Research has shown that individuals participate in high adventure activities for a variety of reasons. This study identified motivational factors for seniors, 55 and older, who participate in the high adventure activity of ice climbing. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with eight senior ice climbers who had at least three years of experience, had climbed the Midwest Silos, and were familiar with the researcher. Using a constant-comparative method, primary and secondary themes were identified from the data.

Concrete Plant Park, which opened in 2009, is part of New York City's new series of parks that creatively engage their industrial past. Although overshadowed by its more famous siblings— The High Line and Brooklyn Bridge Park—^this seven-acre space is the city's answer to Seattle's seminal Gas Works Park. Both parks prominently feature structures from their industrial history, and both seek to bring the public to a polluted, neglected post-industrial waterfront.

This paper is a first-hand account that details the project and activities that led to the building of the Tully Central Schools' windmill. Beginning in the fall 2008 and continuing through the spring 2011, students and teachers at the Tully High School in Tully, New York worked collaboratively with community members to build a windmill on school grounds. Using traditional and not-so traditional methods of teaching and instruction, students were engaged in "hands-on" and "minds-on" learning activities. Since the Emergence of Outward Bound and NOLS (National Outdoor Leadership School), programs have been popping up all over the country spanning from high school outing clubs and high ropes courses to university orientation trips and college degrees (Raiola & O'Keefe, 1999). When an individual is looking to become a qualified instructor in the field of outdoor education, however, there are few programs that offer the combination of high level outdoor training, therapeutic training options, and academic rigor similar to the offerings at the University of New Hampshire.

Rapid Urban Expansion Threatens Biodiversity, Yale University

A brief window of opportunity exists to shape the development of cities globally before a boom in infrastructure construction transforms urban land cover, according to a study in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. Researchers at Yale, Texas A&M and Boston University predict that by 2030 urban areas will expand by more than 463,000 square miles, or 1.2 million square kilometers. That is equal to 20,000 American football fields becoming urban every day for the first three decades of this century.
