Taproot: A Journal of Outdoor Education

Approximately five years have lapsed since Richard Louv launched an unanticipated national children and nature movement with publication of his book. Last Child in the Woods: Saving our Children from Nat tire Deficit Disorder. Just as Gifford Pinchot informed and inflamed (with Theodore Roosevelt's help) public consciousness by coining the term "Conservation" in the early 1900's; Louv's "Nature Deficit Disorder" (NDD) resonated with the suspicions of outdoor professionals in 2005. Seemingly almost everywhere, children were experiencing the outdoors less and less and they, and society, were paying a heavy price because of it!

She has been widely recognized for her "entrepreneurial work style and organizational capacity. " Most importantly. Peg has the special gift of being able to move people and affect change.

2010 Noba Awards, Coalition For Education In The Outdoors

The National Outdoor Book Awards (NOBA) is the outdoor world's largest and most prestigious book award program. It is a non-profit, educational program, sponsored by the National Outdoor Book Awards Foundation, Association of Outdoor Recreation and Education, and Idaho State University.

The purpose of the awards is to recognize and encourage outstanding writing and publishing. Each fall in early November, the NOBA Foundation announces the winners of the ten categories making up the program, including History, Literature, Children, Nature, Natural History. Instructional. Adventure Guidebook, Nature Guidebook, Design, and Outdoor Classic.

First Along The River, Charles Yaple

I am not sure how this publication escaped my attention for so long. Now in its fourth edition, First Along the River... is an indispensable book that all environmental and outdoor education professionals and students should have available at their fingertips. Friend and former colleague Bob Buerger says it well on the book's back cover: "First Along the River provides a concise, introduction to U.S. environmental history. An excellent supplement for any student of the subject."

On July 29, 2010, Representative Carolyn McCarthy of the New York fourth district, introduced H.R. 5963; the Promoting Students Using the Camp Community for Enrichment, Strength, and Success Act or the Promoting SUCCESS Act. The American Camp Association is working closely with Representative McCarthy to advocate for the passing of this bill.

Stimulating Students’ Interest In And Curiosity About Nature Through Frequent And Brief Trips Outdoors, Joanne Claire Kornoelje

Theses, Dissertations and Culminating Projects

This study considers whether frequent and brief trips outdoors can affect students’ interest in and curiosity about nature. Recent research shows that people - and children in specific - are not spending as much time outdoors as in previous generations. This has raised concerns that today’s children will be less likely to champion environmental issues as adults, due to their lack of connection to the environment that surrounds and supports them.

I took my five sixth-grade science classes outdoors eleven times for ten-minute field trips during the 2009-10 school year. Using inquiry-based instruction, the initial trips were focused observation. Subsequent …
