Several reforms that affected the different levels of instruction were implemented in Brazil during the decade of 1850. With respect to secondary education, the regulations proposed in Decree no. 1556 of February 17, 1855, by minister Couto Ferraz, significantly modified the program of studies of the College Pedro II, the model institution of the Empire, by dividing it into two cycles: the Studies of the First Class and the Studies of the Second Class. This study discusses changes in the curriculum, not only in its organization, but also in its composition and the emphasis given to the various disciplines in …

With Assumptions In Mind, Claire Eleanor Creelman

This paper is an account of a three month teaching assignment in Guatemala in which I examined and tested my assumptions about teaching and learning in light of the techniques I used in the classroom, my lesson preparation and my selection of materials. This is done through the examination of a series of lesson plans which I used in classes of different levels and at different times in the program. I was able to demonstrate through these critiques when my actions supported those assumptions as well as the times when they conflicted or even ignored them. In addition, I was …

Sixty-one female and male students at various American institutions participated in the study. The results showed that students perceived themselves to have achieved a high level of personal, social and academic adjustment, and that the undergraduate females, graduate females, undergraduate males and graduate males do not differ significantly in their perceived adjustment. Recommendations for further adjustment strategies are put forward.
