This qualitative, phenomenological study investigates the impact of culture on media choices in English as a Foreign Language (EFL) classrooms within an Arab region in Israel. In addition to traditional grammar-focused instruction, EFL instructors in Israel integrate technology and media to expose students to authentic English pronunciation and cultural communication. However, this technological integration not only facilitates global material transfer but also triggers shifts in different life dynamics. The EFL curriculum, shaped by Western and Jewish ideologies and overseen by the Ministry of Education, faces a critical gap: the lack of representation of Palestinian Arabs. Ever since the turn of the 21st century, the amount of American students studying abroad has increased tremendously. Western Europe in particular had been the hub of American study abroad programs, with high-quality teaching, rich culture, a remarkable ease of travel, various sights to see, and more. Despite this, students began flocking to destinations all across the globe, from Asia to South America to Africa in unprecedented numbers. Student preferences on where they wanted to learn and experience the world had changed forever.

Studying Abroad In College: Investigating How A Living-Learning Community (Llc) Impacts Students, Stella Erbes, Rebecca Jackson, Eunice Sim

Seaver College Research And Scholarly Achievement Symposium

The purpose of this mixed-method study was to identify which elements of a living-learning community (LLC) based in one of Pacific University’s (pseudonym) signature study abroad programs influenced students’ intellectual, personal, social, and spiritual growth. Thus far, 108 undergraduates completed an online survey composed of 32 questions that addressed five sections: 1) Consent, 2) Demographics, 3) Input, 4) Environment, 5) Learning Outcomes. Preliminary results found that personal travel, the educational field trip, and the program staff were the most influential factors in student development. Conclusively, 99.1% of participants reported intellectual, personal, and professional growth, while 76.1% reported spiritual growth.

This presentation takes a look at the suicide rates among South Korean youth ages 15 to 19, comparing the numbers to those of the same age range in the United States. We will look at the raw numbers, go over similarities and differences, and end with contributing factors for both groups. Our conceptual paper links the transformative learning theory to the three dimensions of cultural intelligence to highlight the value of study abroad to provide life-changing learning opportunities. International students in the U.S. face many challenges. They face a variety of hurdles, including navigating and processing what are often drastic differences in language, culture, educational systems, and lifestyle. Existing surveys, and ethnographic research, and case studies (Hopnick, 2102; Li, et al, 2017; Serino, 2017; Suarez-Orozco, et al., 2008) unpack the variety of ways students from different countries navigate such changes. Faculty members’ performance, experience, satisfaction while on a team, and their professional development were investigated to determine the benefits and challenges of cross cultural differences. The sample consisted of full- and part-time faculty members at James Madison University (JMU), located in Harrisonburg, Virginia.
