The Asian Studies Consortium: An Innovative Approach To Study In Japan, Susan Coleman, James L. Narduzzi, Jonathan Lawson, Guy Colarruli

School of Professional and Continuing Studies Faculty Publications

Japan's dramatic re-emergence as a world power in the '80s led a number of U.S. colleges and universities to incorporate courses on Japanese history, politics, culture, management practices and language into their curricula. Simultaneously, there has been a flurry of activity to develop study abroad experiences in Japan to expose American students to Japanese culture and language. Chambers and Cummings (1990) document approximately 90 programs involving a U.S. school and a Japanese partner. For a variety of reasons a number of these ambitious ventures have not been entirely successful.

One of the major impediments to launching a successful study abroad …

Therefore, it is important that the attitudes of educators toward global education and the implementation of global education be studied.

The purposes of this study were to identify the attitudes of public high school principals and social studies …

Biological Olympiads In The Ussr, Vyacheslav Dushenkov

Publications and Research

Biological Olympiads are the sort of intellectual competition widely spread nowadays, especially among high school students. Olympiads, often an integral part of the curriculum, stimulate the pupils' interest in acquiring knowledge and help to evaluate the level of their knowledge. First of all, they include only biological material and can be compared only with USA Science Olympiad events such as "A is for Anatomy," "Bio-Process Lab," "Designer Genes" or "Don't Bug Me." Secondly, it is a personal competition with no official teams. Current Olympiads start at …

Uma analise do numero de series, numero de disciplinas e carga horaria demonstra que o curriculo quebrou …

Professing American Literature: A Report From Brazil, Arnold Gordenstein

New England Journal of Public Policy

This American professor discovered that although his Brazilian students appeared to be entirely receptive to American literature, they were often culturally blocked from the concepts the books contained. He also found that some key American ideas don't translate well into Brazilian culture and that it is nearly impossible for a professor abroad to present literature in a politically and culturally neutral way.

A Primer For Accompanying Secondary Student Groups To France. [Revised]., Jim Becker

Faculty Publications

Many of the factors that can help ensure a successful and positive learning experience for teachers; leaders; chaperons; and students who travel and/or study in France are addressed in this publication. Although it is geared toward France; many of the ideas; especially the section on pre-departure orientation; can be applied to any travel group. The primary objectives of the booklet are to help teachers develop confidence in taking students abroad; to promote the "know before you go" mentality; and to provide an information resource. Among the nearly 100 topics covered are the following: itinerary; airport check-in; menus; post office; insurance; …

The Effects Of Cross-Cultural Experience On Travel Participants, Elizabeth Sander Moreira Aug 1990

The Effects Of Cross-Cultural Experience On Travel Participants, Elizabeth Sander Moreira

Theses and Graduate Projects

The principal hypothesis of this study is that within a group of travel participants, individuals' perceptions of the effects of the trip will differ, but at the same time there will be identifiable convergence of perception. The specific problem addressed is how the lives of Project Minnesota/Leon trip participants have been affected by visiting Nicaragua. The research methodology used was the speech communication theory of Symbolic Convergence and the data was examined by quantal analysis. Three distinct types of participants were found, supporting the validity of this theory and soundly defending the principal hypothesis. A corollary hypothesis is that cross-cultural …

Belize Tertiary School Libraries: A Needs-Assessment Survey, Mary Margaret (Peggy) Wright

DLPS Faculty Publications

Having come to the end of a ten-year study of Belize developing libraries, the Belize government asked for a survey of all the tertiary school libraries within the country. The government purpose centered around the number and caliber of staff, book/journal collections, student use and adequacy of the facility housing the collections. When adequacy of any of the above failed criteria, they asked for recommendations for improvement within the eleven schools visited. Thanks to the United States Information Agency’s Academic Specialist Award, the study, followed by training workshops, took place from February 3-6, 1990. Text of the entire study follows.
