Emphasizing Multilingualism In Teacher Education Courses: Teacher Candidates’ Responses To Translanguaging Pedagogy, Tuba Angay-Crowder, Jayoung Choi, Ji Hye Shin, Nihal Khote

One of the presenters has embedded translanguaging pedagogy in her Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) courses for several semesters to increase teacher candidates’ pluralistic stance when working with multilingual students from immigrant backgrounds. Translanguaging honors all linguistic repertoires that multilingual learners bring to meaning construction. As TESOL course work often centers on students’ advancement of English skills without necessarily emphasizing multilingual development, she intentionally included activities and assignments related to translanguaging. In this presentation, we discuss how her teacher candidates responded to this pedagogy. The shared findings have implications for teaching and learning in teacher education courses.

The COVID-19 pandemic is a global event that has impacted both how and what educators teach. An unexpected outcome of the pandemic was the ability to enhance student understanding of public health through discussion of the novel coronavirus. Course-based undergraduate research experiences (CURE) provide students with authentic research experiences in the framework of an undergraduate course. Here the reconfiguration of the Parasitology Research course as an online CURE is discussed. This course included curriculum focused not only on parasite diagnostics, but also how it relates to diagnosing COVID-19 with the aim of helping students become scientifically prepared citizens.

Challenges related to teaching and learning are often discussed among faculty. Student input is often sparse and subject to volunteer bias, resulting in feedback that is likely not representative. Furthermore, there is also anecdotal evidence that public health faculty have strong views regarding teaching and learning topics, particularly when it comes to online instruction for courses with rigorous methodologic or analytic content, and there are concerns student performance may differ based on course modality. In an effort to draw evidence-based conclusions based on non-anecdotal data, a public health student and faculty dataset creation and analysis model is explored.

This research explores the role that place attachment and place meaning towards an urban farm play in predicting undergraduate students’ civic-mindedness, an important factor in sustainability and social change. In 2017 and 2018, three STEM courses at a private university in the Midwest incorporated a local urban farm as a physical and conceptual context for teaching course content and sustainability concepts. Each course included a four to six-week long place-based experiential learning (PBEL) module aimed at enhancing undergraduate STEM student learning outcomes, particularly place attachment, situated sustainability meaning-making (SSMM), and civic-mindedness. In this methodological review, I explore how recent autoethnographic studies in the field of applied linguistics have used autoethnography as a research methodology. I examine 40 autoethnographies published in peer-reviewed journals between 2010 and 2020. The findings show that a large number of the researchers employed autoethnography as “an umbrella term” without opting for a specific type of autoethnography. Second, a great majority of the autoethnographers diverted from traditional third-person academic prose, although most of them approached their stories with an analytic lens. The purpose of this study was to identify the degree of reflective practices of mathematics teachers in Ramallah and al-Bireh directorates of Education. A related purpose was to examine the effect of both gender and experience on these practices. A total of 78 math teachers, randomly selected from Ramallah and al-Bireh directorates, responded to a questionnaire during the second semester of the academic year 2019-2020. This study aimed to identify the effect of using the gamification strategy on academic achievement and motivation towards learning problem-solving skills in computer and information technology course. A quasi-experimental method was adopted. The study population included tenth-grade female students in Al-Badi’ah schools in Riyadh. The sample consisted of 54 students divided into two equal groups: control group and experimental group. The study tools comprised an achievement test and the motivation scale. In this article, the authors discuss crafting multimodal responses to weekly readings in the university setting. The authors offer a brief description of reader response journals before using social semiotic perspectives on multimodality to justify expanding the reader response journal to include modes beyond written language. Three of the teacher candidates enrolled in the course share one of their multimodal responses and provide insight into their process of creating the response. They share the materials and tools used. The authors conclude this article by considering how educators might assess multimodal responses.

Present pandemic-related circumstances have created unique challenges for educators and students alike. Information and communication technology (ICT) based team-teaching and collaborative course design can effectively mitigate feelings of isolation and disconnection, and enhance student engagement within a remote education context. This article presents a theory-driven framework and ‘how-to’ practical strategies for utilizing team-teaching methodology through web-based delivery platforms. Content focuses on student participation and active learning, curriculum- and technology-related issues, and challenges inherent in synchronous web-based course delivery.

The field of geophysical fluid dynamics (GFD) includes the study of both the motion and thermodynamic aspects of the atmosphere. These properties are of particular importance because they directly influence both local and large-scale weather and climate and are associated with various phenomena. One phenomena that is particularly influential is atmospheric blocking. Atmospheric blocks are persistent, quasi-stationary anticyclones (a.k.a. high-pressure systems) that occur in the atmosphere and disrupt the flow. Empathy—the human attribute of possessing concern for other humans in a way that others’ emotions are mirrored—is both an inborn characteristic, and one that can be taught in various settings throughout one’s life. This qualitative narrative inquiry study explored perceptions from undergraduate college students regarding empathy cultivation in the college humanities classroom setting using the theory of mind—the perspective-taking ability to infer other people’s intentions. In 2020, a novel coronavirus caused dramatic changes in society, and social protests erupted in the United States in response to violence against people of color.
