Classroom Discussion: A Journey To Decentralizing The Classroom, Mike Suther

Throughout history of the United States, teachers have instigated classroom discussion about text in hopes that talk enhanced understanding. More recently, Vygotsky (1978) produced evidence of the importance of social talk in learning. It is through this social interaction or discussion that students construct and negotiate meaning of text. What constitutes social interaction or discussion is what leads some teachers to disagree. The literature on discussion has classified it into two types: recitation and discussion.

The article talks about the continued interest of the speech communication field in technology-supported instruction. Earlier detailed descriptions of teaching/learning laboratories in speech communication are based upon older computer-assisted instruction models and such laboratories were financially out of reach for most small-to-average sized departments. Recent, dramatic enhancements of the memories and processing speeds of microcomputers has made them ideal for recording, editing, and replaying sound supported motion picture clips of speech presentations. The article presents a study which aims to discover characteristics of hybrid speech/theatre departments that describe themselves as highly cooperative and collegial. To test the hypothesis that departments that are highly integrated between disciplines enjoy higher degrees of cooperation than departments where the disciplines function independently, a national survey of combined speech/theatre departments was conducted. The first procedure was a mail survey, which was followed by a telephone survey. The mail questionnaire began with a question regarding the types of degrees offered by the department. This article deals with a study which aims to discover directly the unique elements of the culture of the Institut Teknologi MARA/Midwest Universities Consortium for International Activities (ITM/MUCIA) students that affect their speech communication. There are multiple influences on student behaviors and no generalizations can he made to fit all students at MUCIA. But, there were some characteristics that were extremely common. This article describes a case study of a Communication Undergraduate Teaching Assistant (UTA) program and reports a limited, preliminary assessment of the teaching effectiveness of 25 UTA. The article concludes by identifying various benefits and drawbacks of Communication UTA programs and offers recommendations for departments interested in developing similar programs. Communication faculty were initially skeptical of the idea of having undergraduates serve as teachers. This article describes the creation of an interpersonal skill-mastery assessment for a basic course. In order to assess directly students' ability to perform skills, a search was begun to find a workable method to assess the performance of interpersonal skills in a required core course. After concluding that little research exists concerning basic course assessment, and that standardized assessment instruments may not be readily applicable to a basic course, faculty decided to create a new assessment instrument based on objective and subjective criteria. This paper argues that the primary goal in most organizational communication courses at the undergraduate level is actually the development of communication competencies. This article provides information on several student fees assessed in various departments at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville as of May 1998. In the Department of Music, the music fee, $60 for one half-hour lesson per week, per semester and $120 for one hour lesson per week, per semester is published in the undergraduate catalog. This amount is up from $45 and $90 in the 1994-95 catalog. This fee is collected as a part of registration to help defer the additional costs of one-on-one teaching. This article explores the integration and amalgamation of norm-referenced and criterion-referenced perspectives in a manner that is particularly appropriate for use in basic or introductory speech communication performance courses. Possibly the greatest virtue of using criterion-referenced grading of speeches in a basic speech performance course is the generation of positive affect toward performance. Because students identify with their speeches, they are much more demoralized by negative feedback about their work on these assignments than for others. This article presents a survey which assessed the typical number of core courses college departments have, the most commonly used ones, and, in a general way, their contents. The article also provides data on department names and undergraduate program areas for a picture of the communication discipline in the 1990s. First, with regard to core course requirements, the following observations are noted: Though a majority of departments now have some type of core course requirement, a strong minority don't. The purpose of this study was to identify the factors that seemed to influence student self-assessment in a language arts classroom where portfolios are used as a vehicle to align teaching, learning, and assessment. This was a qualitative study using naturalistic inquiry as a means to identify and explicate those factors. Data were gathered on individual students and the classroom by observation, which took the form of anecdotal records, surveys, portfolio work samples, conferences, and a personal reflective journal. The purpose of this study was to examine teachers' and principals' perceptions of violence prevention training in Iowa's public secondary schools. The perceived level of danger, the actual amount of violence prevention training, the desired amount of violence prevention training, and the discrepancy between actual and desired amounts of violence prevention training were identified for 11 types of school violence. Additionally, the relationship between the size of community and each discrepancy was examined.

Five research questions were utilized with a quantitative research approach. A survey instrument was mailed to 480 public secondary school teachers and 120 public secondary school principals …
