Georgia's Lottery Funded Prekindergarten: Is It Working In Rural Georgia?, Elizabeth Jenkins Kimball

This study examined the impact of Georgia's lottery-funded PreK on its participants' preparedness for kindergarten. The following question was posited: Have Georgia's lottery-funded PreK participants in rural Georgia entered kindergarten with differences in preparedness from entering kindergartners who did not participate? Participation in alternate types of prekindergarten included participation in Head Start, participation in the category of other programs (private, church, or day-care), or no participation in any type of program. Data was collected in twelve school systems in five Regional Educational Service Agencies (RESA) districts in rural southern Georgia. Iowa Prairie: Original Extent And Loss, Preservation And Recovery Attempts, Daryl D. Smith

Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS

Iowa's prairie has to be assessed in the context of the pre- and post-agriculturally dominated ecosystem in which it now exists. This requires an understanding of prairies and of society's perspective of prairies. Therefore, the attitudes of people through time have to be considered; (1) those who were involved in the demise of the prairie, (2) those who helped saved the pieces of the prairie and (3) those who may be called upon to recover the prairie ecosystem.

This project was designed to study how the Internet was used in a secondary mathematics classroom. It looks at a Year 12 Mathematical Modelling class and how the internet is used by the students and teacher in their mathematics lessons. The study consisted of observing and interviewing students to determine how they felt about using the Internet in a secondary mathematics classroom and how they used the Internet. As a performer in schools I often wondered if the "magic" of the stage was what the students identified with or whether in addition they were also understanding and learning spiritual truths. This study examines the effect of learner control on the use of the software package Math Blaster Mystery (MBM) by low ability mathematics students. The Effects Of Context And Number Of Presentations On Repetition Priming, Terry A. Simpson

When a stimulus such as a word is presented twice, the identification of the word on the second presentation is usually facilitated, reflecting repetition priming. This facilitation can occur without a person's awareness and is often referred to as reflecting implicit memory. The present study investigated the effects of number of presentations of words and the context in which words were presented on repetition priming. The study measured reaction times on a lexical decision task in which the participants decided whether a string of letters constituted a word or a non-word. The purpose of this study was to compare the attitudes of parents and teachers to the use of pharmacological management or intervention for the child with ADHD in the classroom. Particular focus was placed on differences in attitude toward the use of stimulants, for the management of emotional/behavioural, cognitive/academic, social and classroom organizational behaviours of children with ADHD. This study was designed to investigate how Year Two children use drawing and writing together to produce a narrative. The participants in this study were one class from a metropolitan, co-educational, independent school. A qualitative descriptive case study approach was selected for this investigation. The researcher collected data by conducting four sessions in which the participants were given the opportunity to write and draw together to produce a narrative. This study was designed to examine the effect of amount of training on the specificity of skill acquisition and transfer. Within the theoretical framework of two contemporary theories of skill acquisition, Anderson's ACT" theory (1982, 1987), and Logan's Instance theory of automisation (1988, 1990), the study extends research by Greig and Speelman (in press) that demonstrated skills can be both general (i.e., can apply beyond the training experience) and specific (i.e., are limited to training experiences). An Analysis Of Research Article Productivity By Telecommunication Scholars Over The Past Decade, David Atkin, Leo W. Jeffres

Journal of the Association for Communication Administration

The article presents a study which assesses scholarly productivity in telecommunication-oriented journals from 1985-1995. Telecommunication can be defined as mediated communication across a distance. Sixteen journals were selected for this analysis. Most were listed among publications with the highest number of telecommunication authorship credits, according to Vincent's study. Some of the differences in journal contributions may be a function of publication frequency and size. For instance, Journal of Media Economics (3.6 percent of articles) offered two issues/year through 1990 before expanding to four issues in 1993. Journalism Quarterly publishes more articles per issue than any of the other criterion journals. …

This article provides information on special student fees authorized by the College of Arts and Sciences at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville. These fees are assessments beyond the regular tuition costs paid by all students when departments must purchase markedly unusual, expendable materials or equipment for use by small numbers of students in certain highly specialized courses. Special fees have also been authorized for departments required to provide services, equipment, or facilities for small populations of students when such services, equipment or facilities are clearly beyond those commonly provided for the majority of students on campus. This article focuses on the problems faced by new college professors and the key to their success, which is communication: establishing a network for information, assistance and encouragement. When colleges and universities start new faculty off in the right direction, those faculty members will function better as teachers, as scholars, as committee members, and as long-term members of that academic community.
