Advisor Use In Cbt: Modality And Placement, John Dempsey, Richard Van Eck
Teaching, Leadership & Professional Practice Faculty Publications
Fifty-eight Education graduate students took a forty-minute computer-based instructional module on introductory statistics with a built-in solicited guidance mechanism. Subjects were randomly assigned to programs that used one of four types of advisement: on-screen digitized video of a human advisor, onscreen text-based advisor, pull-down digitized video of a human advisor, or pull-down text-based advisor. Results indicated that The on-screen video-based advisor condition resulted in higher advisor use than both the text-based and video-based pull-down advisor conditions. Advisor use was significantly correlated with performance during instruction, to time spent during instruction, and to television hours watched per week, but not with …

The Construct Validity Of The Principles Of Edification As Measures Of Edifying Teaching In The Lds Church Educational System, Robert F. Elzey
The Construct Validity Of The Principles Of Edification As Measures Of Edifying Teaching In The Lds Church Educational System, Robert F. Elzey
Theses and Dissertations
The degree of validity of various teacher evaluation systems in the Church Educational System (CES) of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has been questioned. Despite several administrative and scholarly attempts, there has been an absence of an accepted set of dimensions for such measurement. In an effort to specify the desirable attributes and practices of religious educators, CES administrators have defined six CES values and seven principles of edification. One of these values is identified as Edifying Teaching. By CES definition, edification occurs when a student is built up spiritually. The seven principles of edification are …

The study employed survey research to investigate Continuing Professional Development (CPD) activities of Social Workers employed in local Departments of Social Services or Welfare in Virginia. Two social work-related focus groups and an expert panel of adult educators helped identify CPD activities used to construct the survey. The resulting twenty (20) CPD activities, used as the dependent variables for the study, were: formal education, …

Making Meaning From International Educational Experiences: Transforming Inner Landscapes, Sami Lyn Story
Dissertations and Theses @ UNI
This qualitative study sought to gain a more complete understanding of the transformative potential of international educational experiences for US college students. The stories of seven traditionally aged students were evaluated to discern possible commonalties across the diverse experiences. These themes were framed as a cyclical process of departures, passages, and arrivals with special attention given to how students constructed meaning from their intercultural encounters. Factors such as the need to understand, affiliate, and create experiences appeared to be influential along with expectations of host cultures, definitions of family, and time spent in dialectical thought. Students who spent more time …

Kindergarten Schedules: Half-Day, Full-Day, Alternate-Day, Christine Ann Mcgladdery
Masters Theses
Kindergarten schedules have been changing from the widely-used half-day everyday schedule to full-day everyday and full-day alternate-day schedules. This study looks at why these changes have been taking place. It also looks at research of test results of children enrolled in each of the schedules, including longitudinal studies to determine if there is a continuation of benefits gained from a schedule. Parent and teacher attitudes toward the different schedules are researched. Surveys were sent to parents and teachers of Lutheran schools in West Michigan, particularly Our Savior Lutheran School in Grand Rapids, to gather opinions to assist in making a …

Hispanic Women In Leadership: Opportunities, Barriers, And Strategies, Kaye Lynn Peery, Marilyn Grady
Department of Educational Administration: Faculty Publications
Research in leadership that focuses on gender and ethnicity issues provides us with little practical information for women, The few studies that do exist point to gender and race discrimination (Doughty, 1980; Marcias, ]994; Gorena, 1996), Researchers must move beyond the documentation of negative past and present conditions for women and minorities and begin to look at ways these individuals can achieve equality. Additional"cultural studies" will aid in the task of analyzing the power relations that occur in all social settings. If we can discover the source of women's support, we can increase this support for others. By examining the …

Pathways To Administrative Positions, Marilyn Grady, Bernita Krumm, Kaye Lynn Peery
Department of Educational Administration: Faculty Publications
Preparing for the job search, acquiring administrative skills, being part of a network, being in the "right place at the right time," and being the most qualified for a position are all pathways to administrative positions.
Throughout the United States, the majority of students enrolled in educational administration preparation programs are women. The struggle by women to gain leadership positions continues in the 1990s. A survey conducted by The Executive Educator and Xavier University shows that women are best represented among the ranks of elementary school principals (39.7%), followed by junior high/middle school principals (20.5%), and high school principals (12.1 …

Young Children's Understanding Of Design In The Technology Process, Jean E. O'Sullivan
Young Children's Understanding Of Design In The Technology Process, Jean E. O'Sullivan
Theses : Honours
This study explored the development of children's thinking when social constructivist principles of learning were implemented through technological experiences. The study monitored the development of children's understanding of “design" through project work, using classroom based action research. In addition to investigating children's understandings, the study explored the use of technology in early childhood curriculum to develop the skills said to be required in the next millennium. The study found that five year old children are capable of "designing" and that technology is an effective vehicle for developing socially, contextually and culturally appropriate learning experiences.
