Acute Blood Pressure Responses To Static And Dynamic Exercise: Racial Differences, Reuben Leon Wright
Acute Blood Pressure Responses To Static And Dynamic Exercise: Racial Differences, Reuben Leon Wright
Theses and Dissertations in Urban Services - Urban Education
African Americans have a higher incidence of hypertension than other racial groups. Furthermore, some research suggests that normotensive individuals who exhibit exaggerated blood pressure (BP) responses to exercise may be at risk for future hypertension. This study sought to determine if normotensive African Americans exhibited exaggerated BP responses to static exercise or dynamic exercise relative to Caucasian Americans and Asian Americans. Thirty normotensive subjects participated from each of the three racial groups (15 males and 15 females). Subjects held 30% of maximal voluntary contraction (right knee extension) for 3 minutes, and BP was recorded during the third minute. On a …

Predicting Academic Success Of Entering Freshmen At An Urban University Through The Assessment Of Oral And Written Language Competency, Karen D. Cobbs
Theses and Dissertations in Urban Services - Urban Education
In Moores and Klas' (1989) definitive study on college student retention, postsecondary administrators ranked the maintenance of student enrollment second in importance on a list of twenty critical issues facing higher education. Of particular relevance to college administrators has been the retention and graduation of African-American college students (D. B. Hawkins, 1994; Western Reserve, 1991).
Researchers, in considering the overall problem of student attrition, particularly, among African-Americans, have explored such questions as these: Which students are dropping out (Sherman, Giles and Green, 1994; Robinson, 1992)? Why do they discontinue their studies (Austin, 1982; Bohr et al., 1995; Kraft, 1992; Tinto, …
Course Selection Factors Deemed Important By Dental Hygienists Prior To And After The Initiation Of Mandatory Continuing Education In The Commonwealth Of Virginia, Melissa Lynn Sainsbury
Course Selection Factors Deemed Important By Dental Hygienists Prior To And After The Initiation Of Mandatory Continuing Education In The Commonwealth Of Virginia, Melissa Lynn Sainsbury
Dental Hygiene Theses & Dissertations
The purpose of this investigation was to assess the factors deemed important by dental hygienists in their selection of continuing education courses prior to and after the initiation of mandatory continuing education in the Commonwealth of Virginia. Under mandatory continuing education, dental hygiene educators must be able to plan continuing education courses that meet the needs of potential participants.
Results indicate that relative to each other, the 15 factors within this study, ranked in a hierarchy of importance in continuing education course selection by dental hygienists. Mandatory requirement for relicensure and course time ranked higher and course presenter and cost …
A Needs Assessment For A Distance Education Baccalaureate Degree Completion Program For Associate Degree Level Dental Hygienist, Joan Gugino Ellison
A Needs Assessment For A Distance Education Baccalaureate Degree Completion Program For Associate Degree Level Dental Hygienist, Joan Gugino Ellison
Dental Hygiene Theses & Dissertations
The purpose of this descriptive research was to determine the need for a distance education program for geographically dispersed dental hygienists to complete a baccalaureate degree program in dental hygiene. The sample consisted of randomly selected licensed dental hygienists in the Commonwealth of Virginia. A self-designed instrument, titled The Distance Education for a Dental Hygiene Degree Completion Program Questionnaire, was mailed to the study participants after establishing validity and reliability. The questionnaire asked participants to provide information concerning personal demographics, educational background, and interest in completing a dental hygiene baccalaureate degree via distance education. Frequencies, percentages, crosstabulations, chi-square test …

Peer Theater: Social Issues In Action, Shannon Simer
Peer Theater: Social Issues In Action, Shannon Simer
WWU Honors College Senior Projects
Peer education is an effective way to make lasting impressions on both the performers and the audience. When dealing with social issues this is especially true. The performers must have explored their feelings and experiences to a degree of depth that allows them to have enough perspective to portray it to others who may not have thought about the subject in such detail and depth. The audience often relates more easily to their peers than to a grown up telling them how to behave. Many teachers will attest to how much influence children have on each other. This program combats …
Symphonic Band Conducting Practicum, Allison Schmidtke
Symphonic Band Conducting Practicum, Allison Schmidtke
WWU Honors College Senior Projects
Most music education majors take a year-long sequence of conducting classes in their junior year, about two years before we student teach. Unfortunately, of necessity, these conducting classes are rather contrived. Over the period of each quarter, we conducted our ensemble of cooperative, musically mature peers through about five eight- measure exercises focusing on a specific skill. Of course, since actual technique is only one (small) aspect of work on a podium, we were also introduced to the process of score study with its multitude of layers such as consideration of harmonic structure, stylistic elements, orchestration, context (historical influences, information …

Parents' And Teachers' Family Involvement Perceptions In Elementary Schools, Isabel S. Gutierrez
Parents' And Teachers' Family Involvement Perceptions In Elementary Schools, Isabel S. Gutierrez
Graduate Theses
The perceptions of X.I.S.D.'s teachers and parents are studied to understand why a negative teacher attitude, concerning family involvement, seems to dominate the district. Participants perceived limited parents' support in special school activities, home tutoring, teacher-parent communications, preparing and organizing materials for teachers, and volunteering in committees that require parent representation. Parent participants that were experienced in the schools perceived parent involvement as assisting in the classrooms. Those individuals that perceived limited involvement probably get their attitudes in part from the concerns of administrators about parents' criticism as well as their belief that the district is financially able to provide …
Financial Characteristics Of High And Low Performing Schools In A Predominantly Rural State, David L. Silvernail Phd
Financial Characteristics Of High And Low Performing Schools In A Predominantly Rural State, David L. Silvernail Phd
School Funding - Essential Programs and Services (EPS)
Do high performing schools use resources differently than low performing schools? What are the connections between K-12 school funding and academic performance? Today several states (e.g., Illinois, Minnesota, New Jersey, Ohio, Oregon, etc.) are exploring answers to these questions as they attempt to fund schools adequately and in more efficient ways. The research literature from early production function studies (e.g., Brown & Saks, 1975; Hanushak, 1979, 1989; Harnisch, 1987) provides some partial answers, but some of the most recent studies have unearthed some conflicting results (e.g., Baum, 1986; Hedges, Laine, & Greenwald, 1994; Monk, 1994; Wenglinsky, 1997). In addition, few …
Item Estimates Under Low-Stakes Conditions: How Should Omits Be Treated?, Christine E. Demars
Item Estimates Under Low-Stakes Conditions: How Should Omits Be Treated?, Christine E. Demars
Department of Graduate Psychology - Faculty Scholarship
Using data from a pilot test of science and math, item difficulties were estimated with a one-parameter model (partial-credit model for the multi-point items). Some items were multiple-choice items, and others were constructed-response items (open-ended). Four sets of estimates were obtained: estimates for males and females, and treating omitted items as incorrect and treating omitted items as not-presented (not-reached). Then, using data from an operational test (high-stakes, for diploma endorsement), the fit of these item estimates was assessed. In science, the fit was quite good under all conditions. In math, the fit was better for girls than for boys, the …
