It Works For Me: Shared Tips For Teaching, Charlie Sweet, Hal Blythe
Hal Blythe
Why bother to read yet another book about teaching? What can you possibly gain that will prepare you to meet those daily moments of truth? Perhaps this book's title suggests the answer. It Works for Me: Shared Tips for Teaching is not a treatise on pedagogical theory, nor is it designed to dictate a set of rules for success in the classroom. Its purpose is not to provide you with a complete program for better teaching. It Works for Me is simply a collection of practical tips drawn from the real-life experiences of some outstanding college teachers across the disciplines. …

Factors Influencing Assigned Student Achievement Levels, Sheldon Rothman
Factors Influencing Assigned Student Achievement Levels, Sheldon Rothman
Dr Sheldon Rothman
During 1997, teachers in South Australian government schools were asked to assign a level of achievement using the nationally developed curriculum profiles in English, Science, Studies of Society and Environment, and Technology. About one third of state schools participated. Data were collected on student achievement levels, student background factors (age, gender, school card status, aboriginality, special programs), school background factors (CAP, DSP), and teacher confidence in assigning achievement levels using profiles. This paper presents loglinear models to report on relationships between assigned levels and student background, school background, and teacher confidence; relationships among the strands in each learning area; and …

In the school of Aerospace Medicine, the average cost to train one student in the three month Aeromedical Apprentice course in 1998 was $12,500. In this course, students are trained to become medical technicians who are able to effectively support Air Force Flight Surgeons in emergency situations. Students who failed the course of study were eliminated from the program at a cost of thousands of taxpayer dollars with no realized gain by the government or the student. A recent study examined the effects of a study skills training intervention course on U.S. Air Force Aeromedical Apprentices with five main purposes. …

John Griffith
The study examined the effects of a study skills training intervention course on U.S. Air Force Aeromedical Apprentices with five main purposes. The first was to examine the relationship between study skills training and the number of times students required academic interventions outside of normal class time. The second purpose was to examine the relationship between study skills training and end of course averages. A Survey Of Graphics Calculator Use In Victorian Secondary Schools, Alla Routitsky, Patrick Tobin
Dr Alla Routitsky
In 1997, Victoria became the first state to permit the use of graphics calculators in final external examinations. The action was seen as radical for both social and educational reasons. Concerns were raised about the propriety of using the calculators and whether their use would add to existing educational disparities. With the support of the Board of Studies, a survey of secondary schools was undertaken to gauge the response to this decision and inform further action on graphics calculator use in mathematical courses.

This study focuses on the perceptions of Virginia school board chairmen and superintendents as they relate to local governance issues. All superintendents and school board chairman in the state were surveyed on the following topics: their perceptions concerning school board members’ orientations toward their role as representatives (trustee vs. delegate), their personal attitudes concerning the electoral process, their assessment of interest group involvement in district decision-making, their feelings …
