Curriculum-Based Measurement
The very fact that curriculum-based assessment (CBA) forms the basis of a topic-driven conference at the center of American educational and psychological measurement (i.e., the Buros Institute) is testimony that the strategies are receiving a substantial amount of professional attention. Although debate continues regarding to whom and when the term curriculum-based assessment should be ascribed (Coulter, 1988), without question, its prominence has grown considerably in the last 10 years. Within the last 5 years, school psychology and special education have seen their flagship journals, School Psychology Review and Exceptional Children, devote special volumes to CBA. National organizations such as …

4. Academic Skill Assessment: An Evaluation Of The Role And Function Of Curriculum-Based Measurements, Francis E. Lentz, Jack J. Kramer
Curriculum-Based Measurement
In the most meaningful use of the term assessment, important decisions are made daily by teachers based on their assessment of information obtained from student responses to curriculum-related materials. These assessment decisions may include deciding on extra work or deciding to refer a child for learning or behavior problems. The term curriculum-based assessment (CBA) has been used to encompass a wide range of procedures ranging from these daily informal analyses by teachers, to highly structured measurement systems used in special education systems. Although well-constructed guides exist for some sets of curriculum-based decisions (e.g., Shinn, 1989), there is inadequate empirical research …

Curriculum-Based Measurement
The purpose of this chapter is to describe curriculum-based procedures from a broad perspective that encompasses the major models appearing in the professional literature in the past 10 years. Rather than simply review the major perspectives, operating assumptions, and implementation directives of these models, however, nine criteria are presented for a uniform comparison. These criteria were implicit in the adoption of curriculum-based measurement (CBM) in Pine County, Minnesota during the initial training and field-based research conducted in the early 1980s. Therefore, they can be used both to structure the review and to provide district personnel a focused evaluation strategy for …

Curriculum-Based Measurement
The topic of this chapter places me somewhere between Camac the Magnificent and a crystal ball gazer! On the one hand, I am being asked to look into the future and discuss the potential implications of curriculum-based assessment (CBA) for psychoeducational practice. Although my graduate students believe I may have superhuman powers and can be all places at the same time, fortune telling was never one of my talents. On the other hand, like Camac, I obviously believe that CBA is an answer, but I'm not sure what the questions are going to be. In this paper I assume that …

Curriculum-Based Measurement
This volume in the Buros-Nebraska Series on Measurement and Testing provides current information on the development and implementation of curriculum-based measurement. As the title of the volume suggests, effective measurement of children's classroom achievement is not a new problem. Curriculum-based measurement provides an interesting and useful alternative to traditional strategies for assessing academic performance. This volume continues the tradition of including papers given at the annual Buros-Nebraska Symposium on Testing and Measurement as well as additional contributions selected especially for this book. Each of our authors has made significant contributions to the research that has been produced in the area …

Schoolwide Social Skills Training: Providing Preventive Services To Students At-Risk, Robert N. Jones, Susan M. Sheridan, Wayne R. Binns
Department of Educational Psychology: Faculty Publications
This paper reports a schoolwide social skills assessment and training model including a two-gate student identification procedure (i.e., in-class social skills training for all students and small group intensive training for at-risk target students). The model is directed at reducing future serious problems by addressing identified difficulties early (i.e., through secondary prevention procedures). Specific model objectives are to (a) utilize a comprehensive, multigate procedure to identify students at risk; (b) implement schoolwide training procedures to teach a number of important prosocial skills identified by teachers; (c) treat a subgroup of target subjects considered at highest risk for developing pervasive social …

G93-1148 Common Infectious Diseases That Cause Abortions In Cattle, Duane N. Rice, Douglas Rogers
G93-1148 Common Infectious Diseases That Cause Abortions In Cattle, Duane N. Rice, Douglas Rogers
University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials
This NebGuide briefly discusses the common infectious diseases that cause abortions in cattle. "Abortion" is the expulsion of the fetus prior to the end of the normal gestation period. Many abortions occur very early after conception and the embryos or fetuses are so small that they may not be seen. Other abortions may occur near normal calving time and it is difficult to determine whether the cow has aborted or whether a premature birth has occurred. Abortions have many causes which may include physiological problems (such as hormonal imbalances), metabolic problems, toxicoses and/or infectious diseases caused by protozoa, bacteria or …

G93-1179 Finding Sick Cattle Early, Dicky D. Griffin, Louis Perino, Don Hudson
University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials
This NebGuide gives guidelines for identifying sick cattle in feedlots.
Pneumonia is the biggest killer of newly weaned cattle. Many factors influence the outcome of the disease, but one of the most important is finding the sick cattle and starting treatment early.
Finding sick cattle early in the course of the disease can be one of the toughest jobs any of us has. The necropsies and treatment records of thousands of cattle have shown that appropriate therapy started within the first 48 hours of the onset of pneumonia will improve a sick feedlot animal's chance of survival.
The most important …

This NebGuide discusses the importance of financial planning, the results of not planning finances, and the important steps to take in making a financial plan.
Achieving financial security in today's rapidly changing world requires more than earning an adequate income. Making sound decisions about managing financial resources is essential if financial success and security is to be attained. Financial planning refers to this decision making process.
Financial planning is the continuing process of decision making about obtaining, protecting, and using financial resources throughout life. Financial planning means developing and implementing plans to meet defined financial goals and objectives.

G93-1131 Clover Mites And Their Management, Shripat T. Kamble, David L. Keith, Robert W. Davis
University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials
This guide describes the life cycle of clover mites and offers strategies for controlling them.
Clover mites are common nuisance pests in Nebraska, often invading homes and other properties in enormous numbers. These tiny pests are most troublesome in early spring and again in fall, especially on the east and south sides of buildings. Also, they frequently appear on window sills during the winter months, on relatively warm, calm, sunny days. The clover mite is not an insect but is a relative of spiders and ticks. The full-grown clover mite is slightly smaller than a pin head and has a …

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials
This NebGuide describes seven of the most common insects that infest stored food products and provides prevention and control recommendations.
Finding insect-infested food products in the kitchen and pantry is relatively common in Nebraska. Dried food products that are often subject to insect infestations include: flour, cereals, cracked grains, cake mixes, crackers, powdered milk, macaroni, cured meats, dried fruits, nuts, popcorn, and spices. Other items such as pet foods, seed displays, ornamental corn, dried flower arrangements and ornaments made from plant parts may also become infested.
Insect pests most often encountered in stored food products are flour beetles; sawtoothed grain …

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials
This NebGuide deals with food safety in home broiler or table egg production flocks.
Food safety issues such as drug and pesticide residues and bacterial contamination have received a lot of attention from the media lately. While this attention has focused predominantly on practices by the large commercial livestock and poultry industries, procedures to assure food safety and quality should be practiced by home flock producers as well.

Ec93-126 Procedures For Field Demonstrations Of Nitrogen Management Practices, Edwin J. Penas, Richard B. Ferguson, Gary W. Hergert, Charles A. Shapiro, G.D. Binford
University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials
Nitrate-nitrogen in groundwater is a major public concern. Agriculture is often targeted as the primary source; however, crop producers are reluctant to reduce the amount of nitrogen they apply in fear of reducing crop yields and profits. Soil testing for nitrate-nitrogen is being promoted as a way to fine-tune or improve nitrogen management, but adoption by producers has been slow. This publication explains how to conduct a field demonstration using scientifically acceptable methods that are practical for on-farm use.

G93-1128 Understanding Groundwater, William L. Kranz, Delynn Hay, James W. Goeke
University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials
This NebGuide provides information on how groundwater exists, where it exists, and how it moves. Key definitions are highlighted. Water is the life blood of every living creature on earth. Approximately 70 percent of the earth's surface is covered with water. Through the wonders of nature, water can take on many different forms, from the water we drink, to the ice we use to chill a glass of lemonade, to the water vapor used to steam clean equipment. It is easy to understand the significance water plays in our lives, but it may be much more difficult to understand the …
