The Information Technology (IT) industry in India, is one of the major contributors to the country’s growth story. It is organized in a few strong and dominant clusters across the country. Recent research focuses on the emergence, growth and success of the seven big IT clusters that account for 96.55 of total software exports from the country. Unlike the six successful late mover clusters, there are several other late mover IT clusters that have not experienced similar growth. Why do some of the late mover IT clusters in India succeed while others fail to take off despite favorable economic conditions? …

Inducing Compliance With Post-Market Studies For Drugs Under Fda’S Accelerated Approval Pathway, Liang Xu, Hui Zhao, Nicholas C. Petruzzi
Department of Supply Chain Management and Analytics: Faculty Publications
Problem definition: In 1992, FDA instituted the accelerated approval pathway (AP) to allow promising drugs to enter the market based on limited evidence of efficacy, thereby permitting manufacturers to verify true clinical benefits through post-market studies. However, most postmarket studies have not been completed as promised. We address this non-compliance problem.
Academic/Practical Relevance: The prevalence of this non-compliance problem poses considerable public health risk, thus compromising the original purpose of a well-intentioned AP initiative. We provide an internally consistent and implementable solution to the problem through a comprehensive analysis of the myriad complicating factors and tradeoffs facing FDA.
Methodology: We …

A Little Birdy Told Me: Analysis Of The Impact Of Public Tweet Sentiment On Stock Prices, Alexander Novitsky
CMC Senior Theses
The combination of the advent of the internet in 1983 with the Securities and Exchange Commission’s ruling allowing firms the use of social media for public disclosures merged to create a wealth of user data that traders could quickly capitalize on to improve their own predictive stock return models. This thesis analyzes some of the impact that this new data may have on stock return models by comparing a model that uses the Index Price and Yesterday’s Stock Return to one that includes those two factors as well as average tweet Polarity and Subjectivity. This analysis is done with ten …
Abandoning Copyright, David Fagundes, Aaron Perzanowski
Abandoning Copyright, David Fagundes, Aaron Perzanowski
Faculty Articles
For nearly two hundred years, U.S. copyright law has assumed that owners may voluntarily abandon their rights in a work. But scholars have largely ignored copyright abandonment, and case law on the subject is fragmented and inconsistent. As a result, abandonment remains poorly theorized, owners can avail themselves of no reliable mechanism to abandon their works, and the practice remains rare. This Article seeks to bring copyright abandonment out of the shadows, showing that it is a doctrine rich in conceptual, normative, and practical significance. Unlike abandonment of real and chattel property, which imposes significant public costs in exchange for …
Notice Risk And Registered Agency, Andrew K. Jennings
Notice Risk And Registered Agency, Andrew K. Jennings
Faculty Articles
To sue a firm is to sue an artificial person, making the most reliable service method—physically handing papers to the defendant—unusable. This problem illustrates notice risk: if a plaintiff’s service obligations are loose, it is advantaged (because the defendant may never receive notice), whereas if they are strict, the defendant is advantaged (because the plaintiff may struggle to effect service). For litigation involving corporate defendants, civil procedure and corporate law mitigate this problem through a technology for managing notice risk: registered agency. A firm using this technology, because it cannot be served directly, appoints an agent who will accept papers …

An investigative marketing team at Nike has identified an opportunity to acquire the rights to a new Smart Fabric technology. First-pass feasibility investigations look promising: discussion between a Nike engineer and the company that owns the technology paints a plausible picture, and the claimed technical specifications of the material performance imply a promising potential in Nike products. R&D dollars will need to be dedicated in order to nail down the actual performance of these potential products, and New Product Introduction teams will need to investigate the capability to produce and scale.
Does the market landscape warrant allocating resources to a …

Improving tax compliance is a common goal of governments worldwide. The United States is no exception. The size of the nation's "tax gap" - or the difference between what taxpayers pay in taxes in a timely manner and what they should pay if they fully complied with the tax laws - is hundreds of billions of dollars annually, significantly depriving the nation of much-needed revenue.
This paper explores the mixed effects of technological advancements on tax compliance - and, thus, its counterpart, tax noncompliance. On the one hand, technological advances have largely eradicated many of the commonplace tax-noncompliance techniques that …
