Virtual Reality Applications In The Hospitality / Tourism Industry, Patrick Horan Nov 1996

Virtual Reality Applications In The Hospitality / Tourism Industry, Patrick Horan

Conference papers

In this paper the possible applications of VR to the Tourism Industry are discussed. In order to develop an application for any industry one must first get a clear understanding of that industry. Once this is achieved the next step is to develop an application to suit the needs of the Industry. The Industry in question here is the Tourism Industry and this paper begins by discussing the Tourism Industry and more specifically the relationship between Tourism and technology. This is absolutely essential in order to understand how the use of VR will impact on the Tourism Industry in the …

Managing Creativity For Corporate Excellance By Pn Rastogi : Macmillan India, 1996., Nina Jacob Jun 1996

Managing Creativity For Corporate Excellance By Pn Rastogi : Macmillan India, 1996., Nina Jacob

IIMB Management Review

This particular book has a few sections which are best skipped by readers who are unfamiliar with the subject matter of creativity. Chapter 2 begins, “Creativity has come to be recognized as a valuable resource influenced by competitive factors”. What in effect Rastogi implies is that the capacity o be creative can imbue  an organisation with a competitive edge over its rivals, as is borne out after reading the section entitled “creativity as a competive resource”. For executives who want to outperform their peers, simply having a high need for achievement is not enough. Managers should know how to creatively …

Technology And Business: The Missing Link, S Chandrasekar Jun 1996

Technology And Business: The Missing Link, S Chandrasekar

IIMB Management Review

Technology, despite its critical importance to business, has far too often played a secondary role compared to other major management functions like marketing, finance, human resources development, production or corporate planning. The success of many US based technology driven companies in electronics and biotechnology in the seventies and early eighties and the Japanese and German economic miracles, driven largely by technology upgradation in specific targeted industries, should serve to renew interest in the study of the role of technology in improving business performance.

Organisational Ethnography: An Illustrative Application In The Study Of Indian R&D Settings By V Suchitra Mouly And Jayaram K Sankaran. Sage Publications, 1995., S Chandrashekar Mar 1996

Organisational Ethnography: An Illustrative Application In The Study Of Indian R&D Settings By V Suchitra Mouly And Jayaram K Sankaran. Sage Publications, 1995., S Chandrashekar

IIMB Management Review

Organisational Ethnography, by Suchitra Mouly and Jayaram Sankaran applies the insider or ethnographic perspective to the study of Indian R&D settings. In spite of its rather forbidding title, (ethnography according to the Webster’s dictionary is cultural anthropology), there are some interesting and novel aspects to this research work.

Business Quality-The Cutting Edge, V Chandrasekaran Mar 1996

Business Quality-The Cutting Edge, V Chandrasekaran

IIMB Management Review

A World Bank study conducted through the International Data Corporation (IDC) India and Maxi/Micro Inc places the size of the 1995 software service market at $100 billion. 75% of this opportunity originates from six countries : theUS, Japan, Germany, France, the UK and Italy. The market is growing at 15.5%. per annum. Since domestic suppliers in these countries are increasingly unable to meet the value-for-money’ equation, the bulk of this business has to be outsourced to other countries. As a result, the foreign opportunity & market ($1.4 billion in 1991) is growing at 40% per annum. In the last few …

Shouldn’T Management Processes Be Reengineered, Too?, K B C Saxena Mar 1996

Shouldn’T Management Processes Be Reengineered, Too?, K B C Saxena

IIMB Management Review

When organisations reengineer their business processes, they generally tend to concentrate on operational processes rather than management activities. This is because organisation management is traditionally regarded as a function, rather than a process. Process orientation provides an opportunity to improve organisational performance and has been at the root of organisational improvement philosophies such as ‘total quality management’ (TQM) and ‘business process reengineering’ (BPR). The changing business environment poses challenges to management in terms of better coordination, timeto- market, management control, organisational learning, etc. In order to meet these challenges, it is imperative that process orientation should be extended to management …

Reducing Cycle Time At An Ibm Wafer Fabrication Facility, Lieven Demeester, Christopher S. Tang Mar 1996

Reducing Cycle Time At An Ibm Wafer Fabrication Facility, Lieven Demeester, Christopher S. Tang

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

In 1991, IBM San Jose decided to produce and sell magnetic heads for computer disk drives on the open market to original equipment manufacturers. However, as IBM's wafer fabrication facility increased the number of products it manufactured, its manufacturing cycle time lengthened. Since cycle time is important in competing in the open market, IBM San Jose formed a study team (in cooperation with UCLA) to examine the wafer fab and to develop ways to reduce cycle time. The team designed a new production control system and proposed new performance measures for operators and engineers. IBM implemented the new production control …

Influence Of Formation Processes On Oblique Detonation Wave Stabilization, K. Ghorbanian, J. D. Sterling Jan 1996

Influence Of Formation Processes On Oblique Detonation Wave Stabilization, K. Ghorbanian, J. D. Sterling

Business and Information Technology Faculty Research & Creative Works

In this article we report steady, two-dimensional, inviscid solutions for the near field and far field of a supersonic reactive flow over a variable-double-ramp geometry. The incident shock wave compresses and heats the reactants that will combust after flowing some induction length. Upon reaction, a detonation wave forms and intersects the leading wave at some distance from the ramp surface. In this article, reaction-polar diagrams are developed, and the detonation branch solutions are used to investigate the wave interaction processes that may lead to a steady three-wave structure. By considering this formation process new oblique detonation wave stabilization criteria based …

Gas Dynamic Unstart In Superdetonative Ram Accelerators, Kaveh Ghorbanian, James D. Sterling Jan 1996

Gas Dynamic Unstart In Superdetonative Ram Accelerators, Kaveh Ghorbanian, James D. Sterling

Business and Information Technology Faculty Research & Creative Works

In this paper we analyze the reflection of non-reacting shock waves as oblique detonation waves. The 2D, steady, inviscid analysis makes use of detonation polar diagrams to identify incident shock angles that lead to reflected detonations, with and without detonation Mach stem formation. The implications of the results for design and operation of superdetonative ram accelerators are explored. The influence of the projectile forebody geometry, the propellant composition, and the takeover velocity is described. We conclude with a discussion of the significance of these parameters on superdetonative ram accelerator unstart phenomena.

Enhanced Combustion Pulsejet Engines For Mach 0 To 3 Applications, J. Sterling, K. Ghorbanian, T. Sobota Jan 1996

Enhanced Combustion Pulsejet Engines For Mach 0 To 3 Applications, J. Sterling, K. Ghorbanian, T. Sobota

Business and Information Technology Faculty Research & Creative Works

In this paper, we discuss the cyclic operation of an enhanced combustion pulsejet engine (ECPE) applicable in the Mach number range of 0 to 3. The geometry of this engine naturally provides for integration into a new combined cycle engine with ramjets. As in the operation of conventional pulsejets, an ECPE provides engine aspiration, charge compression, combustion and expansion without the use of turbomachinery. The use of modern electronics, fuel injection, and feedback control offers the potential for performance improvements that could make the ECPE a cost-effective competitor for the turbojet engine. This article describes the operating cycle of a …

A Lattice Boltzmann Subgrid Model For High Reynolds Number Flows, S. Hou, James D. Sterling, S. Chen, G. D. Doolen Jan 1996

A Lattice Boltzmann Subgrid Model For High Reynolds Number Flows, S. Hou, James D. Sterling, S. Chen, G. D. Doolen

Business and Information Technology Faculty Research & Creative Works

A sub grid turbulence model for the lattice Boltzmann method is proposed for high Reynolds number fluid flow applications. The method, based on the standard Smagorinsky sub grid model and a single-time relaxation lattice Boltzmann method, incorporates the advantages of the lattice Boltzmann method for handling arbitrary boundaries and is easily implemented on parallel machines. The method is applied to a two-dimensional driven cavity flow for studying dynamics and the Reynolds number dependence of the flow structures. The substitution of other sub grid models, such as the dynamic sub grid model, in the framework of the LB method is discussed.
