Analyzing Sustainability Impacts, Kristi Jane Yuthas, Marc J. Epstein Jan 2012

Analyzing Sustainability Impacts, Kristi Jane Yuthas, Marc J. Epstein

Business Faculty Publications and Presentations

Financial managers need basic models that incorporate the most significant variables, are robust enough to accommodate a wide variety of decisions, and provide results that are simple to communicate. We attempt to help fill this gap by providing a simple and familiar cost-benefit approach that's enhanced and improved through the addition of sustainability outcomes. We developed the cost-benefit tool presented here specifically with the needs of financial managers in mind. It allows them to simultaneously consider the financial and social outcomes of potential decisions without the need for advanced knowledge of sustainability models or methods. The tool is built on …

Redefining Education In The Developing World, Marc J. Epstein, Kristi Jane Yuthas Jan 2012

Redefining Education In The Developing World, Marc J. Epstein, Kristi Jane Yuthas

Business Faculty Publications and Presentations

Brief article in which the authors argue that governments and organizations investing in developing-world education must move away from the assumption that improvements in test scores provide evidence of success. They believe, instead, that in a time of scarcity, it is more important to seek out interventions that lead to the greatest social and economic impact for the poor.

Transformational Solutions Of Self Through Companion Animals, Jill R. Mosteller Jan 2012

Transformational Solutions Of Self Through Companion Animals, Jill R. Mosteller

Business Faculty Publications and Presentations

How consumers manage the dynamics between love and money can be intertwined in a myriad of ways. Based upon the growing presence of companion animals in U.S. households (now estimated at 62%) and related financial spend (over $50 billion in 2011) (APPA 2011), understanding consumers' identity dynamics relating to companion animals may be theoretically insightful. The things we love exert a strong influence on our sense of self (Ahuvia 2005). Companion animals may be classified as extensions of oneself in addition to being associated with significant life events or experiences (Belk 1988; Ahuvia 2005). By understanding the meanings companion animals …

Marketing And The Common Good: Implications Of Caritas In Veritate, Thomas A. Klein, Gene R. Laczniak, Patrick E. Murphy

Marketing Faculty Research and Publications

This paper extends the authors’ previous work on applying Catholic Social Teachings to issues in marketing to the specific question of the common good. Approaches to studying the social impact of marketing and the challenge of adequately defining the common good are discussed. Attention is next given to key vectors of Catholic Social Teaching and their application to ethical issues in marketing. The focus of the analysis is on specific sections in Caritas in Veritate, Pope Benedict XVI’s recent encyclical devoted to providing principles for dealing with the ongoing global economic crisis. A discussion of how these principles might be …

Exploring The Role Of Pseudodeductibles In Auto Insurance Claims Reporting, Dana A. Kerr Phd Jan 2012

Exploring The Role Of Pseudodeductibles In Auto Insurance Claims Reporting, Dana A. Kerr Phd

Faculty Publications

Many who purchase insurance understand that by reporting covered losses to their insurers they increase the chances of future premium increases or reductions in insurance coverage. If under such circumstances a policyholder decides not to report an otherwise covered loss, the policyholder is effectively displaying the presence of a “pseudodeductible.” That is, given a covered loss occurs, a policyholder may define a personal and unobservable threshold that is greater than any stated deductible in the policy below which an insurance claim for the loss will not be reported. The scant amount of empirical research on this topic suffers from a lack …

Informality And Labor Market Dynamics During Economic Downturns: Evidence From Egypt, Rania Roushdy, May Gadallah

Poverty, Gender, and Youth

This working paper investigates the evolution of the Egyptian labor market during the world financial crisis period. There has been a mild decline in unemployment, combined with a slight increase in both labor force participation and employment to population ratio. Some subgroups of workers have been more vulnerable than others during the crisis period. The results of this paper concur with the historical experience, which suggests that young, old, unskilled and female workers are more likely to bear the brunt of an economic downturn.

The demographic landscape of the United States is changing. Now more than ever, larger populations of multicultural individuals are present and fully integrated into all parts of American society. Astronomical Tourism: An Often Overlooked Sustainable Tourism Segment, Fredrick M. Collison Ph.D. Jan 2012

Astronomical Tourism: An Often Overlooked Sustainable Tourism Segment, Fredrick M. Collison Ph.D.

Great Lakes Hospitality & Tourism Educators Conference

Astronomical tourism is a potential attraction for visitors to destination areas where dark skies free from artificial light pollution can be enjoyed. This situation presents an opportunity for locations with specific product offerings such as astronomical observatories, (Robson, 2005; Weaver, 2011), auroral displays (Weaver, 2011), national/state/local parks, amateur astronomy organizations that offer public programs, and miscellaneous other providers. The focus here is on parks that have both dark skies and an organized astronomy program. The purpose of this research is two-fold: 1) to provide background research on necessary elements for astronomical tourism and 2) to examine the potential for this …

Information Security In The Age Of Cloud Computing, James Eric Sims Jan 2012

Information Security In The Age Of Cloud Computing, James Eric Sims

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Information security has been a particularly hot topic since the enhanced internal control requirements of Sarbanes-Oxley (SOX) were introduced in 2002. At about this same time, cloud computing started its explosive growth. Outsourcing of mission-critical functions has always been a gamble for managers, but the advantages of cloud computing are too tempting to ignore. However, the move to cloud computing could prove very costly for a business if the implementation were to fail. When making the decision to outsource critical functions, managers look to accountants to provide assurance that their data and transactions will be secure and that emergency procedures …

A Longitudinal Analysis Of Changes In Accounting Curriculum Requirements Since The Perry Commission Report, William Homer Black

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation develops a consistent structure that documents the state of undergraduate and graduate accounting education in the United States and how it has changed from the 1960s to the present. It includes a literature review that summarizes major developments affecting accounting education to provide a historical context relevant to current efforts to accomplish educational change. The analysis identifies patterns in educational requirements and compiles information that may instruct educational policy discussions. It considers the recommendations of the Beamer Committee, policy statements of the AICPA, and the influences of accounting accreditation and the move to 150-hour educational requirements. In combination, …

Essays On The Strategic Implications Of Marketing Capabilities: Marketing Exploration And Exploitation, Joseph Mitchell Price Jan 2012

Essays On The Strategic Implications Of Marketing Capabilities: Marketing Exploration And Exploitation, Joseph Mitchell Price

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

My dissertation examines how exploitation and exploration capabilities impact organizational performance for competitive advantage. The first essay reviews previous empirical, simulation, and theoretical studies to provide a synopsis and quantitative assessment of previous empirical research. The organizational performance implications of both exploration, exploitation, and their interaction (i.e., an ambidexterity) are evaluated through the substantiation of previous findings. Exploration and exploitation focus are discrete options that require a cognitive choice and are constrained by firm resources. The results show exploitation as having the greater relative impact on performance folloby exploration and ambidexterity. Essay two conceptualizes marketing capabilities as exploitation and exploration. …

Reinventing The Wheel: Examining The Antecedents, Moderators, And Outcomes Of The Innovation Process, John Eli Smothers

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This study extends research on the innovation process at the individual-level by examining antecedents, moderators, and outcomes associated with the generation, promotion, and implementation of innovative ideas in the workplace. In a sample of 667 working adults, this study found that high leader-member exchange was positively related to cognitive and behavioral learning strategies focused towards generating innovative ideas. Employees with proactive personalities were more likely to engage in the innovation process, and a sense of psychological safety in regard to the climate for innovation facilitated the implementation of innovative ideas. This study indicates that the successful implementation of an innovative …
