The Benefit Of Information Sharing In A Logistics Outsourcing Context, Hossein Zolfagharinia, Michael Haughton Jan 2012

The Benefit Of Information Sharing In A Logistics Outsourcing Context, Hossein Zolfagharinia, Michael Haughton

Business Faculty Publications

The goal of this article is to examine the value of information sharing in outsourcing of logistics activities. Our examination is in the context of a fairly complex network in which location and capacity of carriers are considered. The current research also examines the moderating effect of network settings on the benefit of information sharing. A core component of our methodology is use of computational experiments to provide a variety of logistics network conditions under which we investigate information sharing value. The investigation involves comparing two strategies, namely full and no information sharing. Underlying the experiments are procedures to optimise …

A Systematic Method For Discovering Effective Patterns Of Virtual Project Management, Deepak Khazanchi, Ilze Zigurs Jan 2012

A Systematic Method For Discovering Effective Patterns Of Virtual Project Management, Deepak Khazanchi, Ilze Zigurs

Information Systems and Quantitative Analysis Faculty Publications

The effective management of virtual projects within global organizations is an inherently collaborative activity as well as an increasingly critical issue. The concept of patterns provides a useful theoretical framework by which we can study the design of effective practices for the management of virtual projects. However, a number of significant gaps exist in our knowledge of this area and one of the most important is the need for a systematic method for discovering effective patterns. We propose such a systematic method and provide a detailed example of the use of our proposed pattern discovery method.

U.S. Manufacturing Unemployment In The Recession: The Impact Of Offshoring And Unauthorized Resident Populations, Tyechia Paul, Leslie West, Ziette Hayes Jan 2012

U.S. Manufacturing Unemployment In The Recession: The Impact Of Offshoring And Unauthorized Resident Populations, Tyechia Paul, Leslie West, Ziette Hayes

College of Business and Economics

Employment in the manufacturing industry has declined. The year 2010 was the first time in over a decade that jobs were added in industry. The manufacturing sector is comprised of establishments engaged in the mechanical or chemical transformation of materials or components into new products. Given the high levels of U.S. manufacturing unemployment since the onset of the most recent recession, it has been argued that the high unemployment rate is due to offshoring and unauthorized residents. This study supports the argument that the high levels of U.S. manufacturing unemployment is due to offshoring and refutes the argument that the …

A Crisis Of Confidence: Understanding Money Markets During The Financial Crisis, Mark D. Griffiths, Vladimir Kotomin, Drew B. Winters

Faculty Publications – Finance, Insurance, and Law

The money markets are at the heart of the recent financial crisis and are the subject of substantial news coverage. However, much of what was reported showed a lack of understanding of money markets in general and, a specific lack of understanding as to why the financial crisis unfolded as it did in these markets. The purpose of this paper is to discuss what actually happened and why. Specifically, we discuss: (1) the economic role of the money markets, (2) the institutional features of the money markets central to the financial crisis and, (3) what actually happened in the various …

Economic Impact Of Stable Flies (Diptera: Muscidae) On Dairy And Beef Cattle Production, David B. Taylor, Roger D. Moon, Darrell R. Mark Jan 2012

Economic Impact Of Stable Flies (Diptera: Muscidae) On Dairy And Beef Cattle Production, David B. Taylor, Roger D. Moon, Darrell R. Mark

Department of Agricultural Economics: Faculty Publications

Stable flies, Stomoxys calcitrans (L.), are among the most damaging arthropod pests of cattle worldwide. The last estimate of their economic impact on United States cattle production was published 20 yr ago and placed losses at $608 million. Subsequently, several studies of effects of stable flies on beef cattle weight gain and feed efficiency have been published, and stable flies have become increasingly recognized as pests of cattle on pasture and range. We analyzed published studies and developed yield-loss functions to relate stable fly infestation levels to cattle productivity, and then estimated the economic impact of stable flies on cattle …

Quality Of Life In Nonmetropolitan Nebraska: Perceptions Of Well-Being And Church Life: 2012 Nebraska Rural Poll Results, Rebecca J. Vogt, Cheryl A. Burkhart-Kriesel, Randolph L. Cantrell, Bradley Lubben, Philip Schwadel

Nebraska Rural Poll

Most rural Nebraskans are positive about their current situation. And, they continue to be generally positive about their future situation. Over one-half (51%) of rural Nebraskans think they are better off than they were five years ago and just under one-half (45%) think they will be better off ten years from now. Certain groups remain pessimistic about their situation. Persons with lower household incomes, older persons, and persons with lower educational levels are the groups most likely to be pessimistic about the present and the future.

When asked if they believe people are powerless to control their own lives, most …

Oil Price Shocks And Volatility In Australian Stock Returns, Mohammad Zahidul Hasan, Ronald A. Ratti Jan 2012

Oil Price Shocks And Volatility In Australian Stock Returns, Mohammad Zahidul Hasan, Ronald A. Ratti

Business Conference Papers

This paper examines the effect of oil shocks on return and volatility in the sectors of Australian stock market and finds significant effects for most sectors. For the overall market index, an increase in oil price return significantly reduces return, and an increase in oil price return volatility significantly reduces volatility. An advantage of looking at sector returns rather than a general index of stock returns is that sectors may well differ markedly in how they respond to oil price shocks. The energy and material sectors (as expected) and the financial sector (surprisingly) are out of step (in different ways) …

Consuming The Aesthetic Of The Everyday: A Visual Analysis Of Errol Morris’ “High Life”, HéLèNe De Burgh-Woodman, C Payne

Business Conference Papers

Co-constructed meaning between marketer and consumer is a key dimension of convergent (Jenkins 2006) media. Using “Miller’s High Life” ads (1999-2005) we discuss how content convergence prompts different co-constructed meanings among consumer segments, how “mundane art” is produced and how the marketer/consumer relationship is transformed into a filmmaker/viewer-consumer one. From an interdisciplinary perspective, we discuss the implications of this transformed relationship for marketing.

Sustained Growth, Eric Thompson, University Of Nebraska-Lincoln Jan 2012

Sustained Growth, Eric Thompson, University Of Nebraska-Lincoln

Business in Nebraska

U.S. Macroeconomic Outlook

he U.S. economy remains on a path of sustained, moderate economic recovery. Growth persists despite a stalled U.S. housing sector, recession in Europe and slowing growth in China and much of the developing world. These factors undoubtedly have slowed growth in the U.S. economy, and are a continuing source of uncertainty, but U.S. economic growth has continued just the same. The credit must go to a flexible and agile U.S. private sector. Since the financial crisis began, businesses have continued to improve their balance sheets, invest in productivity, and seek out opportunities in growing sectors of the …

An Evaluation Of The Consequences Of Using Short Measures Of The Big Five Personality Traits, Marcus Credé, Peter D. Harms, Sarah Niehorster, Andrea Gaye-Valentine Jan 2012

An Evaluation Of The Consequences Of Using Short Measures Of The Big Five Personality Traits, Marcus Credé, Peter D. Harms, Sarah Niehorster, Andrea Gaye-Valentine

Department of Management: Faculty Publications

Researchers often use very abbreviated (e.g., 1-item, 2-item) measures of personality traits due to their convenience and ease of use as well as the belief that such measures can adequately capture an individual’s personality. Using data from 2 samples (N = 437 employees, N = 355 college students), we show that this practice, particularly the use of single-item measures, can lead researchers to substantially underestimate the role that personality traits play in influencing important behaviors and thereby overestimate the role played by new constructs. That is, the use of very short measures of personality may substantially increase both the Type …

A Middle Management Perspective On Strategy Implementation, Ahmad Salih

Presidential Alumni Research Dissemination Award

Strategic management researchers have established the key role middle managers play in the implementation of organizational strategies. However, there is little information regarding middle managers' views and perceptions of strategy implementation and the challenges associated with implementing organizational strategies. Drawing from activity theory and inspired by the strategy-as-practice perspective, the purpose of this qualitative phenomenological study was to understand the views and perceptions of 12 middle managers and 3 management consultants on the factors influencing organizational strategy implementation. The research questions addressed in this study included the views of middle managers on: (a) the key challenges associated with strategy implementation, …

Resource Adequacy: Should Regulators Worry?, Hernan D. Bejarano, Lance Clifner, Carl Johnston, Stephen J. Rassenti, Vernon L. Smith Jan 2012

Resource Adequacy: Should Regulators Worry?, Hernan D. Bejarano, Lance Clifner, Carl Johnston, Stephen J. Rassenti, Vernon L. Smith

Economics Faculty Articles and Research

Regulators have proposed various institutional alternatives to secure network resource adequacy and reasonably priced electric power for consumers. These alternatives prompt many difficult questions: Does the development of Demand Response reduce the need for new capacity? How effectively can a government-mandated Capacity Market foster efficient investment? How does centralized generator commitment (with revenue guarantees) compare to a system in which Generators voluntarily commit themselves with no revenue guarantees? If exclusive distribution contracts were replaced by unregulated retail competition, what would be the effects on investment and market prices? We use laboratory experiments to address these questions.

Measuring The Impact Of A Comprehensive Health And Wellness Initiative, Patrick R. Rooney

CMC Senior Theses

As healthcare costs continue to rise across the country more companies are beginning to look for new strategies to cut costs. This paper looks at the history behind the health and wellness movement and specifically evaluates Healthy Incentives, King County's own health and wellness initiative and the impact such a program has on direct medical expenditures as well as key health risk factors that …

The Role Of Employment At-Will On Job Loss And Unemployment In The United States, Gina B. Small, David E. Gunderson, Ernest A. Capozzoli Jan 2012

The Role Of Employment At-Will On Job Loss And Unemployment In The United States, Gina B. Small, David E. Gunderson, Ernest A. Capozzoli

Journal of Business, Industry, and Economics

The United States has lost more than 8 million jobs since the recession starting in 2008. This level of job loss and corresponding unemployment issignificantly greater than what has occurred in other developed countries.Furthermore, reviewing swings in the unemployment rate in the developedcountries shows the United States has exaggerated unemployment swingsbetween times of prosperity and economic malaise compared to other developed nations. The doctrine of employment-at-will is explored as one ofthe causal forces in the differences between the United States and other compared economies wherein either the employer or the employee has theright to terminate an employment relationship at any …

Paying The Irs Whistleblower: A Critical Analysis Of Collected Proceeds, Karie Davis-Nozemack, Sarah J. Webber Jan 2012

Paying The Irs Whistleblower: A Critical Analysis Of Collected Proceeds, Karie Davis-Nozemack, Sarah J. Webber

Accounting Faculty Publications

Congressional changes to the IRS Whistleblower Program were intended to induce more participation in the program by allowing larger incentives and greater certainty that whistleblowers would be paid. Since the Program was amended, tax whistleblower tips have increased 76 percent1 and revenue collected due to whistleblowers has increased 79 percent.2 Despite a rise in tips and revenue collected, whistleblower payments have not increased. In fact, the number of tax whistleblower awards paid has decreased 44 percent.3 We hypothesize that this trend is due to the administration of the program but also to the interpretation of “collected proceeds.” Collected proceeds are …

Comparing Market-Based And Financial Statement-Based Stock Valuation Models: Implications For Growth Expectations And Differences Across Time Periods, Jacqualyn Ann Fouse Jan 2012

Comparing Market-Based And Financial Statement-Based Stock Valuation Models: Implications For Growth Expectations And Differences Across Time Periods, Jacqualyn Ann Fouse

Finance and Real Estate Dissertations - Archive

The value of a share of common stock in a publicly-listed company should be equal to the present value of the future cash flows the company is forecast to produce, andultimately pay out to its stockholders. Expectations for these flows may incorporate information that goes beyond current earnings discounted into perpetuity as per the Dividend Discount Model (DDM). By comparing a market-based valuation model with a financial statement-based valuation model this paper seeks to find evidence of information embedded in market valuations that may not be captured in financial statement-based valuations. The analysis endeavors first to identify a component of …

Essays On Option Market Information Content, Market Segmentation And Fear, Mishuk Anwar Chowdhury

Finance and Real Estate Dissertations - Archive

This dissertation consists of three essays. The first essay tests whether stock returns can be predicted using divergence from put-call parity. Using a robust methodology that controls for the early exercise premium of American put and call options, the study shows that stocks with upside divergence from put-call parity outperform stocks with downside divergence from put-call parity. Predictability is persistent over multiple holding periods and divergence is also predictive of tail events. The second essay examines segmentation of equity and option markets in the presence of information asymmetry. The study uses the slope of the implied volatility skew as a …

This dissertation explores the antecedents and outcomes associated with the individual stress response. It begins with an extensive literature review of three conceptualizations of stress in organizations. Next, the construct psychological capital is explored as a potential moderator of the stressor-stress response relationship. A review of the psychological capital literature is presented including the potential and limitations of current interventions designed to develop psychological capital. A synthetic model for organizational stress is developed and presented. Hypotheses are formulated based on this model. In order to test hypotheses, two tools are developed. First, Psychological Capital Training (PCT), a multimodal intervention designed …
