Consolidating Findings From Business Process Change Case Studies Using System Dynamics: The Example Of Employee Morale, Zuzana Kristekova, Marlen Christin Jurisch, Michael Schermann, Helmut Krcmar

Information Systems and Analytics

In this paper, we explore system dynamics as a useful approach to consolidate findings from case studies on business process change (BPC) projects. We compile data from 65 BPC case studies to develop a system dynamics simulation model that helps us to investigate ‘employee morale’ as an important construct in BPC projects. We show that such simulation models consolidate the complex and often non-linear findings from BPC case studies in a way that makes it available to discourse among researchers, lecturers and students as well as BPC professionals. Thus, this paper contributes to knowledge management and learning by suggesting system …

Self Vs. Organizational Employment: The Neglected Case Of Positive Spillover, David J. Prottas Jan 2012

Self Vs. Organizational Employment: The Neglected Case Of Positive Spillover, David J. Prottas

New England Journal of Entrepreneurship

Self-employment is presented as enabling people to better balance their work and family roles but research on its effectiveness is equivocal. We collected survey data from 280 self- and organizationally-employed certified public accountants and conducted a multivariate analysis comparing positive spillover and conflict between the two groups. The self-employed reported less work-to-family conflict with no differences with respect to family-to-work conflict or positive spillovers. However, there were different patterns between male and female subsamples: self-employed males experienced less conflict and more positive spillover than male employees, whereas self-employed females had less of one form of conflict but more of the other.

People With Disabilities: A New Model Of Productive Labor, Valentini Kalargyrou

Hospitality Management

The nation’s largest minority is people with disabilities, comprising more than 50 million individuals (U.S. Census Bureau 2008), who contribute to the diversity that nurtures new ideas and supports businesses become more competitive in a diverse marketplace. Businesses can improve their competitive edge if they take steps to integrate underrepresented groups, such as people with disabilities, into their workforce [Office of Disability Employment Policy (ODEP) 2005]. This untapped pool offers a source of skilled and dedicated employees to counter the effects of the aging and shrinking workforce, especially in the hospitality and tourism industry, which is labor intensive and faces …

Price Dispersion In The Airline Industry: A Conceptual Framework And Empirical Analysis, Edward D. Gailey, Ashutosh Dixit, Thomas W. Whipple, Rajshekar G. Javalgi

Business Faculty Publications

Many businesses compete in multiple markets which can cause businesses to temper their price adjustments, affecting price dispersion. The authors propose a framework based on major characteristics of competition and market structure which influence price dispersion. The focus of this study is the U.S. airline industry analyzing data from 5,974 city pair routes. The results of this empirical analysis show that multi-market contact and the interaction of market concentration with multi-market contact have considerable effects on price dispersion. An understanding of these effects provides valuable insights for developing pricing strategies and extending the stream of research on price dispersion.

Institutional Dynamics In Smaller Emerging Markets: British West Indies And Spanish West Indies, Reccia Charles, Nazly Nardi, Ruth Clarke

HCBE Faculty Presentations

Generally governments in developing economies work towards encouraging enterprise growth as the engine to increase national wealth and higher standards of living. In terms of the form of enterprise, some countries favor public or public-private partnerships, while others favor private enterprise primarily. The smaller the economy the more likely it is that the government will be involved in promoting the growth of enterprises. This paper examines the role of institutional dynamics in supporting or limiting enterprise growth in the British West Indies and the Spanish West Indies. The interplay of the three parts of the institutional profile, regulatory, cognitive and …

Influence Of Religion And Religiosity On Consumer Behavior - An Integrative Model, Maria Petrescu

HCBE Faculty Presentations

Using the consumer socialization theory and traditional models of consumer behavior, we formulate an integrative model representing the influences of religious affiliation and religiosity on consumer behavior, through modeling, reinforcement and social interaction. We analyze religion as religious denomination that includes a system of symbols that produces a system or values and norms, influencing conceptions of life. The study focuses on the concept of religiosity, in terms of individual level of spiritual commitment or religious affiliation. We propose that religiosity and religious affiliation, including related reference groups, influence attitudes, cognition and consumer behavior. The key contribution of this study is …

Imports, Unionization And Racial Age Discrimination In The Us, Jacqueline Agesa, Richard U. Agesa Jan 2012

Imports, Unionization And Racial Age Discrimination In The Us, Jacqueline Agesa, Richard U. Agesa

Economics Faculty Research

Past studies of the relationship between competition and racial wages find that domestic competition reduces racial wage discrimination of nonunion workers. This article examines the effects of foreign competition on racial wages of union and nonunion workers utilizing an empirical model which allows for cluster-adjusted SEs by industry. Such a procedure allows independence of observations across industries but not within industries, thereby not overstating the significance of industry invariant controls. In this analysis, clustered SEs prevent the overstatement of the significance of imports as a means to reduce earnings discrimination. We find evidence of a wage premium for nonunion white …

The Private Provision Of Public Goods: An Analysis Of Homes On Golf Courses, Robert E. Mccormick, Frank F. Limehouse, Melissa M. Yeoh Jan 2012

The Private Provision Of Public Goods: An Analysis Of Homes On Golf Courses, Robert E. Mccormick, Frank F. Limehouse, Melissa M. Yeoh

Publications

This paper examines the joint production of golf and real estate development. The empirical results of this analysis show that, over time, golf courses are being constructed less for recreational golf and more for contractual assurance of green open space for homes. We believe that this fundamentally provides some evidence that the demand for environmental quality is growing and that markets are increasingly able to find creative contracting mechanisms to satisfy demands for public goods.

A Polyphonic Approach To The 'Dark Side' Of Making Video Games, Johanna Weststar, Amanda Pettica-Harris, Steve Mckenna Jan 2012

A Polyphonic Approach To The 'Dark Side' Of Making Video Games, Johanna Weststar, Amanda Pettica-Harris, Steve Mckenna

Management and Organizational Studies Publications

This paper considers the video game industry and how it is represented through social media blogs and tweets. It aims to disentangle the polyphony of voices communicating through different stories about what it means to work in the gaming industry. The multiple voices found within the blogs and tweets weave a complex and contested narrative about the carnivalesque way in which video games are made, poignantly illustrating the good, the bad, and the ugly. Using the work of the Russian literary theorist and philosopher, Mikhail Bakhtin (1984, 1993), and particularly his notions of monologic and dialogic stories and narratives (McKenna, …

Ability Dispersion And Team Performance: A Field Experiment, Sander Hoogendoorn, Simon C. Parker, Mirjam Van Praag Jan 2012

Ability Dispersion And Team Performance: A Field Experiment, Sander Hoogendoorn, Simon C. Parker, Mirjam Van Praag

Business Publications

This paper studies the impact of diversity in cognitive ability among members of a team on their performance. We conduct a large field experiment in which teams start up and manage real companies under identical circumstances. Exogenous variation in - otherwise random - team composition is imposed by assigning individuals to teams based on their measured cognitive abilities. The setting is one of business management practices in the longer run where tasks are diverse and involve complex decision-making. We propose a model in which greater ability dispersion generates greater knowledge for a team, but also increases the costs of monitoring …

Customer Revenue Sharing And User Reward Programs In Online Social Media, Fouad H. Mirzaei, Fredrik Odegaard, Xinghao Yan Jan 2012

Customer Revenue Sharing And User Reward Programs In Online Social Media, Fouad H. Mirzaei, Fredrik Odegaard, Xinghao Yan

Business Publications

Online social media (OSMs) have become a popular and growing phenomenon on the Internet, as exemplified by the millions of followers of websites like YouTube, Twitter and Facebook. Given the ease of access and high competition over the Internet to attract users, a question that arises is whether OSMs should develop revenue sharing programs and reward their contributing users. Aiming to expand market share and boost revenue, some OSMs recently have realized the influence of these programs in changing the outcome of their online competition. We model this competition by a duopoly game where users are either active or passive …
