The Story Of Taste: Using Eegs And Self-Reports To Understand Consumer Choice, Charnetta Brown, Adriane B. Randolph, Janée N. Burkhalter May 2012

The Story Of Taste: Using Eegs And Self-Reports To Understand Consumer Choice, Charnetta Brown, Adriane B. Randolph, Janée N. Burkhalter

The Kennesaw Journal of Undergraduate Research

The authors investigate consumers’ willingness to switch from a preferred manufacturer brand to an unfamiliar private-label brand if taste is perceived as identical. Consumer decisions are examined through recordings of electrical brain activity in the form of electroencephalograms (EEGs) and self-reported data captured in surveys. Results reveal a willingness of consumers to switch to a less-expensive brand when the quality is perceived to be the same as the more expensive counterpart. Cost saving options for consumers and advertising considerations for managers are discussed.

The Fiscal Crisis Of The Campus: The View From California, R. Jeffrey Lustig May 2012

The Fiscal Crisis Of The Campus: The View From California, R. Jeffrey Lustig

Journal of Collective Bargaining in the Academy

The significance of the disinvestment in American baccalaureate, Ph.D. and community college institutions in recent years can hardly be exaggerated. The quandary posed by the attendant reduced funding goes beyond issues of crowded classrooms and dilapidated facilities; ultimately it questions whether our higher education will continue to be a gateway to equality and guarantor of opportunity, a path to broader horizons for citizens—or if it will be transformed into a bulwark of social inequality and vehicle for narrow vocational instruction.

Determining how to successfully grapple with this decline in funding is hindered, however, by the ways in which policy-makers and …

Financing Higher Education: Privatization, Resistance And Renewal, Gerald Turkel May 2012

Financing Higher Education: Privatization, Resistance And Renewal, Gerald Turkel

Journal of Collective Bargaining in the Academy

The fiscal crisis of higher education currently is being resolved largely through a financing policy of privatization, a pattern that increasingly shifts responsibility to individual students and their families. The politics of privatization makes it ever more difficult for lower-income students to attend college and has become a major financial burden for middle-income people. Beyond the direct financial consequences, privatization has increasingly subordinated the research and educational missions of higher education to the countervailing imperatives of economic growth and competitiveness. Privatization has enhanced the entrepreneurial and corporate features of universities and colleges, increasingly shifting the values of higher education away …

Multisource Feedback Leadership Ratings: Analyzing For Measurement Invariance And Comparing Rater Group Implicit Leadership Theories, Kim Gower May 2012

Multisource Feedback Leadership Ratings: Analyzing For Measurement Invariance And Comparing Rater Group Implicit Leadership Theories, Kim Gower

Theses and Dissertations

This research outlines a conceptual framework and data analysis process to examine multisource feedback (MSF) rater group differences from a leadership assessment survey, after testing the measures for equivalence. MSF gathers and compares ratings from supervisors, peer, followers and self and is the predominant leadership assessment tool in the United States. The results of MSF determine significant professional outcomes such as leadership development opportunities, promotions and compensation. An underlying belief behind the extensive use of MSF is that each rater group has a different set of implicit leadership theories (ILTs) they use when assessing the leader, and therefore each group …

Two Essays On The Sell-Side Financial Analysts, Xi Liu May 2012

Two Essays On The Sell-Side Financial Analysts, Xi Liu

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

In the first essay titled "The Information Role of Analysts' Contrarian Revisions," I study a special group of revisions: contrarian revisions, defined as recommendation changes that are inconsistent with sizable stock price movements during the past week. I find that contrarian revisions are relatively more informative than trending revisions. In particular, contrarian revisions are associated with a both statistically and economically larger post-announcement drift. I also find contrarian downgrades are less likely to be issued by all-star analysts and analysts with more experience. After implementation of Regulation RD, the market reaction to contrarian revisions issued by all-stars significantly decreases, indicating …

Branding In Bottom Of Pyramid (Bop): Case Of Grameen Bank (Gb), Mohammed Solaiman

These micro enterprises will be an integral part of the market-based ecosystem. Thus, in the line of BOP model, the Grameen Bank creates opportunities for self employment for rural poor people in general and women in particular. As such, for creating entrepreneurs as well as consumers the framework is “low income plus credit facilities will be more investment and it will generate more income, more savings, more investments …

Keynote: The Identity Of Fashion Brands, Klaus Heine May 2012

Keynote: The Identity Of Fashion Brands, Klaus Heine

International Conference on Marketing

Interest has been growing in the brand identity concept, because it offers a systematic approach for developing symbolic benefits, which are becoming more and more essential for brand differentiation. Although they are a distinctive feature of luxury brands and often even exceed their functional benefits, there still exists no comprehensive identity concept designed specifically for luxury brands.

Dependent on human identity, brands are also ascribed as having an identity. The brand identity comprises all brand associations that are intended by the company and corresponds with the intra-company self-perception of a brand, which determines precisely how the brand should appear to …

Parallel Session: Home-Based Female Entrepreneurs In Pakistan: An Exploratory Case Study, Faryal Salman, Amber Gul Rashid

International Conference on Marketing

Pakistani female entrepreneurs have received increasing attention in recent years as part of various initiatives. However, home-based female entrepreneurs still seem to be relegated to the background and have not received sufficient attention in academia or industry. In order to ensure that these female entrepreneurs are not only understood but also facilitated (if possible), it is crucial to understand how they function. These entrepreneurs are very often one of the key – yet unfortunately seldom acknowledged - enablers of economic activity. Given Pakistan‟s economic issues, these unsung heroines need to be nurtured. It is hoped that this case-based paper will …

Parallel Session: Consumers' Need For Uniqueness, Attitude And Ethical Behaviour Towards Counterfeit Products In Pakistan, Faryal Salman, Farishtae Minwalla May 2012

Parallel Session: Consumers' Need For Uniqueness, Attitude And Ethical Behaviour Towards Counterfeit Products In Pakistan, Faryal Salman, Farishtae Minwalla

International Conference on Marketing

A major motivation for this study is to measure consumer buying behaviour and attitude towards counterfeit products in Pakistan. The author asserts that the stimulus for using counterfeit products is consumer‟s unconventional attitude towards these fake products and the reason for not using may be consumer‟s avoidance of similarity. Another minor objective of this study is to measure the ethical behaviour of consumers in lieu of using counterfeits.

Keynote: Branding A Nation In The 21st Century, Kriengsak Chareonwongsak

The concept of a ‘’Nation as a Brand’’ is not new, but has already been a historical reality. In the 21st Century however, it is necessary for each country to pay much more attention to this topic due to the greater and increasing interconnectedness and globalization of our world in every aspect; economically, politically and socially, as illustrated by the KOF Index of Globalization in 2011 which collected the data of 186 countries from 1970 to 2008, concluding that our world is more globalized (KOF Swiss Economic Institute, 2011).

Effects Of Accounting Regulations On Economic Decision-Making: A Case Study In The Film Industry, Christopher Rizzio May 2012

Effects Of Accounting Regulations On Economic Decision-Making: A Case Study In The Film Industry, Christopher Rizzio

Honors Scholar Theses

Big actors, big effects, and big budgets all characterize today’s movies. Companies that produce these films have continued to increase spending to create better pictures and attract more people to the theatre. As part of the media and entertainment industry, film companies are subject to several specific accounting rules that govern the reporting of revenues and the classification of film expenses. However, many of these rules issued by the Financial Accounting Standards Board (FASB) are subject to a good deal of interpretation. These ambiguities can make it difficult to correctly report earnings in an industry that spends billions of dollars …
