Response Rate And Response Error In Marketing Research, M. Yasemin Ocal Atinc
Response Rate And Response Error In Marketing Research, M. Yasemin Ocal Atinc
Doctoral Dissertations
In this study, I investigate the perspectives of marketing researchers views about the two important concepts of survey research, response rate and response bias. I specifically aimed to answer the following questions: Research Question #1: Do marketing researchers separate the concepts of response rate from response bias? Research Question #2: How exactly should data quality be measured? Is it about sample representativeness, minimizing non- response bias or just solely Increasing the response rate? Research Question #3: What are researchers doing to assess and minimize response bias? Research Question #4: Do additional efforts put forth by survey researchers, such as reminder …
Valuing Value: Value-In-Use And Marketing Performance, Kevin William James
Valuing Value: Value-In-Use And Marketing Performance, Kevin William James
Doctoral Dissertations
A unified subject matter defines every scientific discipline. Marketing then, like other disciplines, consists of a finite set of core concepts. This dissertation focuses specifically on the core concept of "value" as being among the most central of concepts and more specifically elaborates theoretically on the concept of value-in-use. Historically, marketing's received view suggests customer satisfaction is a key contributor to firm success. However, the extant literature reports a weak relation between customer satisfaction and a firm's organizational performance (Woodruff, 1997). This dissertation makes a theoretical case for value as among the most telling metrics in all of marketing and …

A Study Of Failures In The Us Banking Industry, Joseph Trendowski
A Study Of Failures In The Us Banking Industry, Joseph Trendowski
Theses and Dissertations in Business Administration
This dissertation studies failures in the U.S. banking industry following the 2008 financial crisis. The dissertation offers an exhaustive review of the organizational failure literature, and changes in the banking industry environment over the past century. It takes three theoretical perspectives - institutional, industrial organization and resource-based view- to analyze failures in the banking industry.
The review and analysis allows me to trace the roots of recent bank failures to external (institutional, competitive) and internal (resource structure, strategy, risk) factors, and propose several hypotheses linking such factors with failures. The hypotheses are tested using a data-set that included all bank …
Relational Exchange In Nonprofits: The Role Of Identity Saliency And Relationship Satisfaction, Jennifer Anne Taylor
Relational Exchange In Nonprofits: The Role Of Identity Saliency And Relationship Satisfaction, Jennifer Anne Taylor
School of Public Service Theses & Dissertations
Research and practice in nonprofit fundraising has increasingly been focused on the benefits of relational exchange. This dissertation examines relationships between donors and nonprofit organizations and their impact on the charitable giving levels using identity salience and relationship satisfaction as key mediators of nonprofit relational exchange. Previous research has shown that there are a plethora of charitable giving motivations that contribute to supportive behaviors in the nonprofit context; however, this research does not provide a comprehensive understanding of the intervening variables. This study modified previous studies by introducing relationship satisfaction in addition to identity saliency, as mediating constructs. Results confirm …
“Green” Technology And Ecologically Unequal Exchange: The Environmental And Social Consequences Of Ecological Modernization In The World-System, Eric Bonds
History and American Studies Articles
This paper contributes to understandings of ecologically unequal exchange within the world-systems perspective by offering a series of case studies of ecological modernization in the automobile industry. The case studies demonstrate that “green” technologies developed and instituted in core nations often require specific raw materials that are extracted from the periphery and semi-periphery. Extraction of such natural resources causes significant environmental degradation and often displaces entire communities from their land. Moreover, because states often use violence and repression to facilitate raw material extraction, the widespread commercialization of “green” technologies can result in serious human rights violations. These findings challenge ecological …

In order for the United States, as well as other nations, to decrease their dependency and reliance on imported fossil fuel, to control and reduce the largest source of their carbon emission, and to secure their national transportation system, a faster transition from the Internal Combustion Engine to the Electric Vehicle has to be promoted. The public and private sectors will have to work hand in hand to ensure reaching such a national goal.
This paper lays out a technology roadmap for a private company ‘Tesla Motors’, proposing a balanced mixed basket of Technology Push and market Pull strategy in …
Attitudes Toward And Behavioral Intentions To Adopt Mobile Marketing: Comparisons Of Gen Y In The United States, France And China, Rebecca Wells, Catherine E. Kleshinski, Terence Lau
Attitudes Toward And Behavioral Intentions To Adopt Mobile Marketing: Comparisons Of Gen Y In The United States, France And China, Rebecca Wells, Catherine E. Kleshinski, Terence Lau
Management and Marketing Faculty Publications
The rapid global diffusion of mobile marketing makes it increasingly important to understand cross-‐cultural consumer attitudes and behavioral intentions toward mobile marketing as a promotional channel. By building on the previously published research of Altuna and Konuk (2009), this work investigates the attitudes and behavioral intentions toward mobile marketing of Generation Y consumers in the United States, France, and China. Based on this analysis, Chinese Gen Y have the most positive attitude toward mobile marketing, and their overall attitude is significantly more positive than the attitudes of French and American Gen Y groups. While American Gen Y's behavioral intentions are …
Marketing Strategy And The Board Room Network, Shannon Cummins
Marketing Strategy And The Board Room Network, Shannon Cummins
Marketing & Entrepreneurship Faculty Publications
This dissertation introduces and catalogues marketing strategic schema to the business literature. The complexity of marketing strategic schema is described and measured using qualitative review of 90 firms’ annual reports. I show that firms with more complex marketing strategic schema benefit from enhanced financial performance as measured by Tobin’s q, profitability, and sales; but are not rewarded by the stock market or in terms of market share. Additionally, I show that board of director networks, created when firms share board members either directly or indirectly, moderate the relationship between marketing strategic schema and firm financial performance. I show that firms …
Marks And Brands: Conceptual, Operational And Methodological Comparisons, Deli Yang, M. Sönmez, Q. Li
Marks And Brands: Conceptual, Operational And Methodological Comparisons, Deli Yang, M. Sönmez, Q. Li
School of Business Faculty Research
People tend to use brands and marks interchangeably due to their similarities. However, they are often nonsubstitutable to each other. This paper systematically examines the similarities and differences of these two terms in conceptual, operational and methodological manners taking account of history and international dimensions. Such clarification is important given the increasing significance of marks and brands for all stakeholders (rather than consumers only). The paper starts with the definitional understanding about the two terms. It then focuses on the history of these two terms to reveal how their evolvement has been. Next, it discusses their similarities and differences, including …
How First Mover Advantages And Agglomeration Economies Affect Foreign Entry Survival, Jing'an Tang, Ben S. Liu
How First Mover Advantages And Agglomeration Economies Affect Foreign Entry Survival, Jing'an Tang, Ben S. Liu
WCBT Faculty Publications
While entry timing literatures suggest firms to enter a foreign market as pioneers to gain the first mover advantages, studies on entry locations recommend firms to enter a market where there is already a critical mass of their peers, i.e., to be late movers in order to benefit from the agglomeration effects. As two important dimensions of foreign entry strategy, entry timing and location literatures seem to offer opposite recommendations. To resolve this apparent paradox, this study builds a network-based foreign entry and performance model. We argue that these two dimensions of market entry are interdependent. Entry strategies that can …
War Without Violence: Leveraging The Arab Spring To Win The War On Terrorism, Pat Proctor
War Without Violence: Leveraging The Arab Spring To Win The War On Terrorism, Pat Proctor
Journal of Strategic Security
After a decade of war, the United States has failed to eradicate the threat of salafist jihadism. No matter how hard it tries, the United States cannot kill its way to victory in the war on terrorism. Sweeping changes across the Middle East—dubbed the "Arab Spring" by the media—have presented the West with a unique opportunity to pursue an alternative approach. Rather than engaging in war (politics through violence), the United States should engage in mass politics (war without violence) to compel the Arab world to reject the salafist jihadism idea. This article proposes a strategy calibrated to defeat international …
The Youth Bulge In Egypt: An Intersection Of Demographics, Security, And The Arab Spring, Daniel Lagraffe
The Youth Bulge In Egypt: An Intersection Of Demographics, Security, And The Arab Spring, Daniel Lagraffe
Journal of Strategic Security
During the Arab Spring, Egyptians revolted against decades of poor governance and failed institutions. A wide range of grievances contributed to the eventual fall of the Mubarak regime, and most of these grievances were influenced by the demographic composition of the Egyptian population. This paper argues that the youth bulge in Egypt played a major role in the political transition and as such serves as the prime example of the intersection of demographics, security, and the Arab Spring.
Learning From Libya, Acting In Syria, Caitlin A. Buckley
Learning From Libya, Acting In Syria, Caitlin A. Buckley
Journal of Strategic Security
The international community has reached an impasse. The violence committed by Syrian President Assad's government against opposition forces, who have been calling for democratic reform, regime change, and expanded rights, has necessitated a response from the international community. This article explores various ways the international community could respond to the crisis in Syria and the consequences of each approach. It compares the current calamity in Syria to the crisis in Libya and examines the international community's response to the violence perpetrated by Qaddafi's regime. It further analyzes reports, primarily from the UN and news sources, about the ongoing predicament in …
Libya And Resolution 1973: The Law Of Politics, Monica Naime
Libya And Resolution 1973: The Law Of Politics, Monica Naime
Journal of Strategic Security
This paper analyzes recent developments in the intervention in Libya from the perspective of international relations and international law. The evidence suggests that states decided to intervene in Libya prior to sanction from the United Nations Security Council's Resolution 1973. The implication from the Libyan example is that politics was the impetus for the formulation and implementation of law, and not the other way around. Law "happens" in a context, and this context is shaped and bounded by international politics. This article is intended to invigorate further research into how international politics influences the creation, interpretation, and application of international …

Impact Of Business Intelligence And It Infrastructure Flexibility On Competitive Advantage: An Organizational Agility Perspective, Xiaofeng Chen
Impact Of Business Intelligence And It Infrastructure Flexibility On Competitive Advantage: An Organizational Agility Perspective, Xiaofeng Chen
College of Business: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
There is growing use of business intelligence (BI) for better management decisions in industry. However, empirical studies on BI are still scarce in academic research. This research investigates BI from an organizational agility perspective. Organizational agility is the ability to sense and respond to market opportunities and threats with speed, and BI can help in the sensing role of organizational agility. Drawing on the systems theory, dynamic capabilities framework, and literature on competitive advantage, organizational agility, business intelligence, and IT infrastructure flexibility, we hypothesize that BI use and IT infrastructure flexibility are major sources of organizational agility. We developed a …
An Empirical Understanding Of The Dialectic Relationship Between A Central Governing Body And The Individual Sites In A Multisite Enterprise Resource Planning (Erp) System Implementation, Tedde J. Taege
College of Business: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Multisite enterprise resource planning (ERP) system implementations are a challenge faced by organizations. One of the facets of this challenge is to balance the central control of the multisite implementation with the unique requirements desired by each of the sites. The competing interests of the individual sites against the other sites as well as the total organization are forces at work with respect to the collective interest of the organization’s ERP. The study seeks to gain insights into the dynamics of a multisite organizational ERP implementation by analyzing the motivations and challenges in the interactive relationship. The grounded theory approach …
Relationship Of Facebook Usage To Team Identification, Caitlin Moyer
Relationship Of Facebook Usage To Team Identification, Caitlin Moyer
Master's Theses (2009 -)
This study examines the relationship of Facebook usage with sports team identification using Wann's (2006c) "Team Identification-Social Psychological Health Model" to help identify individuals' needs, or motives, for connecting with the team via Facebook as well as with the team itself. To the extent that the team's Facebook presence is believed to fulfill certain needs for an individual, connecting with a team via Facebook was expected to result in higher levels of team identification with that team. Thus, by determining the uses and gratifications that individuals glean from connecting with the team via the social networking site, marketers may be …

Collaborating Across Cultures: Cultural Metacognition And Affect-Based Trust In Creative Collaboration, Roy Y. J. Chua, Michael W. Morris, Shira Mor
Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business
We propose that managers adept at thinking about their cultural assumptions (cultural metacognition) are more likely than others to develop affect-based trust in their relationships with people from different cultures, enabling creative collaboration. Study 1, a multi-rater assessment of managerial performance, found that managers higher in metacognitive cultural intelligence (CQ) were rated as more effective in intercultural creative collaboration by managers from other cultures. Study 2, a social network survey, found that managers lower in metacognitive CQ engaged in less sharing of new ideas in their intercultural ties but not intracultural ties. Study 3 required participants to work collaboratively with …
Three Essays On Cross-Listings From Emerging Markets, Omar Alejandro Esqueda
Three Essays On Cross-Listings From Emerging Markets, Omar Alejandro Esqueda
Theses and Dissertations - UTB/UTPA
During the last two decades, the number of cross-listed firms has been rising steadily. Recently, exchange-traded cross-listings from emerging markets have outnumbered those from developed countries. Chapter I shows an introduction to cross-listings. Chapter II analyzes the implications of ownership structure on the cross-listing premium of emerging-market firms that cross-list on U.S exchanges. Insider ownership is an important determinant of the value of cross-listed firms. The spike and fall in excess-value around the cross-listing year described in the extant cross-listing literature is substantially higher if the firm has insider ownership. In fact, investors are worse-off in the long-run when they …

Business Management And Ethics: An Islamic Approach, M. M. Maishanu, Ahmad Maigari Dutsin-Ma
Business Review
This paper explores the relationships between business management and ethics in Islam. The paper’s central theme is that business management is not separate from ethics; the latter reinforces the former. In Islam, mundane and spiritual pursuits are complementary as such mundane activities are not left to chance but guided by sharia to enhance the chances of spiritual salvation. To establish this, the paper largely relies on the Holy Quran and Hadith and other complementary sources of data. Istikhlaf (vicegerency), Tauhid (Oneness and Uniqueness of Allah) and ukhuwah (Brotherhood) are regarded as the main guiding concepts or precepts behind activities which …
