Enhancing Knowledge Worker Creativity In Bureaucratic Organizations: A Grounded Theory Study, Jaime Macias Apr 2020

Enhancing Knowledge Worker Creativity In Bureaucratic Organizations: A Grounded Theory Study, Jaime Macias

Doctor of Education (Ed.D)

Through a grounded theory qualitative study consisting of interviews, observations, and document reviews, this study examined a mid-sized military organization to answer two questions: (1) How does the military organizational design (i.e., bureaucracy) influence the creative process? and (2) How do leaders amplify (mitigate) the positive (negative) effects of bureaucracy on the creative process? The data suggest that the perceived tension between organizational hierarchy and creativity is mitigated by the immediate supervisor’s behavior and ability to navigate the bureaucratic landscape. This study added to the existing body of research on creativity in the workplace in two ways. First, the researcher …

Application Of Theory Of Constraints (Toc) In Managing Project Information Constraints, Ferdinand Z. Prantl

EMSE Doctoral Projects

The scope of this doctoral project is the non-traditional application of Drum-Buffer-Rope (DBR) from the area of Theory of Constraints (ToC) in mitigating disruption in distribution facilities during phased upgrades caused by information constraint. The relevance of this project is that industrial equipment upgrades pose a significant risk of disrupting the operation of automated distribution facilities. It is partly due to a very high expected availability rate, as well as tight coupling with other upstream and downstream elements of the larger supply chain network. As a consequence of disruption in this scenario, losses incurred not only within the facility being …

The Impact Of Hotel Service Robot Appearance And Service Attributes On Customer Experience, Chuhan Thomsen Apr 2020

The Impact Of Hotel Service Robot Appearance And Service Attributes On Customer Experience, Chuhan Thomsen

Theses and Dissertations

In the past decade, an increasing discussion has taken place regarding the employment of hotel service robots. One critical issue is the impact service robots exhibit on customer experience. However, most of the existing studies focus on service robots’ technical functions or customer’s adoption behavior instead of customers’ psychological or attitudinal reactions toward the robot. Meanwhile, the emergence of humanoid robots has raised great attention from both researchers and industry practitioners. Humanlike features (e.g. facial expressions, emotions, and motions) inherently affect customer experience in a hotel environment. Nevertheless, limited literature exists in incorporating service robots’ anthropomorphism and service attributes into …

This dissertation is comprised of two essays that examine consumer responses to product and service failures. In essay 1, I use the U.S. automobile industry as a backdrop to investigate how consumers respond when their products experience a defect-related failure identified by the manufacturer that necessitates a recall. I develop a conceptual framework to test the impact of a regulator-initiated digital marketing campaign (DMC) on consumer compliance to product recalls. The empirical context is the launch of a nationwide DMC by the U.S. automobile industry’s regulator. The analysis spans 12 quarters of recall completion data pertaining to 296 recalls falling …

Essays On Corporate Finance, Shuyu Xue Shuyu Apr 2020

Essays On Corporate Finance, Shuyu Xue Shuyu

Dissertations and Theses Collection (Open Access)

This dissertation has two essays on corporate finance. In the first chapter, I investigate the dual-class structure. The dual-class structure is often regarded as poor corporate governance and the source of agency problems. However, I find that, for companies with high information asymmetry and long investment horizon, dual-class structure delivers higher operating performance and valuation ratios. These performing dual-class companies tend to have a higher investment in intangibles, more innovations, less pay-out, and less CEO compensation. The findings suggest that dual-class structure could be optimal in empowering information-advantageous inside shareholders and ensuring corporate long-term goals.

In the second chapter of …

Trade Financing In Emerging Markets, Jamie L. Morris Apr 2020

Trade Financing In Emerging Markets, Jamie L. Morris

Senior Theses

Businesses need capital to initiate trades, drive growth, and produce profit, but unfortunately, not all companies can access to capital easily. Small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), although critical to the global economy, typically have trouble funding trades because of a lack of creditworthiness. This problem worsens for SMEs in emerging markets in volatile economies with political instability (“Trade finance and SMEs” 2016, p.11-21). In this study, we analyze how third-party trade finance companies can help finance trades more easily for SMEs in eight (8) emerging markets: Kenya, Rwanda, Ethiopia, Chile, Peru, Thailand, Cambodia, and Indonesia. We use a unique source …

Unpacking The Effects Of International Experience In Intercultural Negotiations, Chei Hwee Chua Apr 2020

Unpacking The Effects Of International Experience In Intercultural Negotiations, Chei Hwee Chua

Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation examines how international experience influences the outcomes of intercultural negotiations. Its main contributions lie in the novel and contextualized conceptualization of international experience and the development of a comprehensive theoretical model that unpacks the effects of international experience in intercultural negotiations. I propose that international experience is a multi-dimensional construct that encompasses four dimensions: breadth, depth, cultural distance, and cultural heterogeneity. I argue that experiences abroad develop and strengthen individuals’ intercultural competence, psychological capital and global identity, which in turn positively influence the outcomes of intercultural negotiations, i.e., they mediate the relationship between international experience and intercultural negotiation …

The Effect Of Peer-To-Peer Recognition Systems On Helping Behavior: The Influence Of Rewards And Group Affiliation, Paul W. Black Apr 2020

The Effect Of Peer-To-Peer Recognition Systems On Helping Behavior: The Influence Of Rewards And Group Affiliation, Paul W. Black

Theses and Dissertations

Peer recognition systems are an increasingly popular management control tool through which employees can recognize and thank other employees. While these systems have potential to motivate firm desired behaviors, including behaviors that are unobservable by management, little is known about if, or when, they are effective. Using a laboratory experiment, I examine the effectiveness of these systems in motivating employee helping behavior, both when the system includes rewards and when it does not. While I document that helping behavior is generally greater when peer recognition systems are present, I also document that group affiliation is a key moderating factor in …

Sticks And Stones May Break My Bones: Social Undermining As Social Influence, Jason Kautz Apr 2020

Sticks And Stones May Break My Bones: Social Undermining As Social Influence, Jason Kautz

Theses and Dissertations

The current social undermining literature suggests the important role of the witness in determining the negative impact on the victim. However, the literature has yet to explicitly explore the witness’ role in social undermining. In this dissertation, I integrate theory and research on social influence and emotions to develop a framework that suggests social undermining be considered a form of social influence. This framework allows for the exploration of the witness’ sense-making process following a social undermining event along with the accumulated effects of repeated exposure to a series of social undermining events. I propose that social undermining influences witness …

Newcomer Student-Athlete Perceptions Of Coaches’ Socialization Strategies: Scale Development, Evelyn Su Jara-Pazmino Apr 2020

Newcomer Student-Athlete Perceptions Of Coaches’ Socialization Strategies: Scale Development, Evelyn Su Jara-Pazmino

Theses and Dissertations

In this era of multi-million dollar paydays, the need to fill arenas and the pressure to win has increased dramatically. In order to build a winning program, the coaching staff turns to national and international recruiting. According to David Ching, Senior Contributor of Forbes, “Nearly every Power Five college athletics program spends more than $1 million per year on recruiting” (Ching, 2018). The fact that student-athletes have a limited time of four years of eligibility to perform for their institutions, results in a continuous influx of newcomers to the team. Student-athletes with a diverse cultural background have to adapt to …
