Creating A Fog: Can Plain English Be Used To Mislead Investors?, Scott Collins

CGU Theses & Dissertations

A recent growth in textual analysis research in the accounting and finance literature relies heavily on context to draw conclusions about the readability or sentiment of the text under study. Yet the complexity of the text used in the financial disclosure is also relevant in evaluating readability and sentiment. Experimental results in this dissertation thesis show that a change in annual report complexity is associated with a change in the probability that a subject will comprehend the information being communicated in the disclosure. Specifically, increasing the complexity of an annual report disclosure dampens the probability that a subject will understand …

Presently, park and recreation agencies partner with community entities to offset funding reductions and to offer new and/or ancillary programs. Importantly, partnerships must provide mutual benefits to be successful and the antecedents and factors of inter-organizational relations (IOR) are important to discover. The purpose of this study was to determine factors that might predict IOR between park and recreation agencies with Wounded Warrior …

An Examination Of Corporate Agribusiness Financial Performance: How Agribusinesses Perform Over Time And Under Various Conditions, Sierra J. Enlow

Theses and Dissertations--Agricultural Economics

While several studies examine the managerial structure of privately owned agribusinesses, few studies take a comprehensive look at publically traded agribusiness firms. Our study examines the historical position of agribusiness compared to the market, and then studies the impact of the global economic and financial crisis. The objective of this study is to pinpoint effects of corporate financial management strategies, commonly researched in financial literature on agribusiness firms’ performance. Through utilizing a quantile regression we find that agribusiness position in times of financial crisis is directly related to firm performance. As we examine internal factors, several interesting impacts of managerial …

Essays On The Effect Of Excess Compensation And Governance Changes On Firm Value, Mustafa A. Dah Jan 2012

Essays On The Effect Of Excess Compensation And Governance Changes On Firm Value, Mustafa A. Dah

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation consists of three essays on the effect of excess compensation and corporate governance changes on the firm’s performance. The first paper utilizes a cost minimization stochastic frontier approach to investigate the efficiency of director total compensation. Our findings suggest that board members are over compensated. We show that, on average, the director actual compensation level is above the efficient compensation level by around 63%. Our results suggest that an increase in director excess compensation decreases the likelihood of CEO turnover, reduces the turnover-performance sensitivity, and increases managerial entrenchment. Thus, the surplus in director compensation is directly associated with …

Three Essays On Short-Selling, Margin Trading And Market Efficiency, Song Wang Jan 2012

Three Essays On Short-Selling, Margin Trading And Market Efficiency, Song Wang

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

My dissertation contains three essays on short-selling, margin trading, and market efficiency. The first essay uses a unique exogenous event, the introduction of short selling in the Chinese stock market, to examine the direct link between idiosyncratic risk and short selling. Based on Shleifer and Vishny (1997), I hypothesize that idiosyncratic risk deters arbitrageurs with negative information from taking short positions in overvalued stocks. Consequently, the stocks with high idiosyncratic risk are more overvalued at the onset of the introduction of short sale and perform worse in the subsequent period. The second essay examines the impact of the introduction of …

Three Essays On Investments: An Examination Of The Effects Of Diversification And Taxes, Matthew Hurst Jan 2012

Three Essays On Investments: An Examination Of The Effects Of Diversification And Taxes, Matthew Hurst

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Chapter 1 examines the effect of property-type diversification in equity real estate investment trusts (REITs) from 1995 to 2006. A strong positive relationship is documented between property-type diversification and return on assets, return on equity, and Tobin’s Q. The diversification benefit comes from both the ability to select better performing property types in “hot” markets and the limited exposure to poorly performing property types in “cold” markets. Diversified REITs produce higher cash flows relative to equity as a result of a broader opportunity set; moreover, return on assets increases with the degree of diversification, which suggests significant shielding to property-type …

Stand Up And Speak Up: Employees' Prosocial Reactions To Observed Abusive Supervision, Manuela Priesemuth Jan 2012

Stand Up And Speak Up: Employees' Prosocial Reactions To Observed Abusive Supervision, Manuela Priesemuth

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation examines what happens when employees witness supervisory abuse in the workplace. In particular, it explores whether-and when-employees will respond to witnessing supervisory abuse of a coworker by engaging in prosocial actions aimed at benefitting the target of abuse. In doing so, it extends work on abusive supervision. Traditionally, abusive supervision research has focused on the impact of abuse on the victim him/herself. However, this work explores the impact of abusive supervision on third party observers. In addition, because abusive supervision represents a form of organizational injustice, this dissertation extends both work on abusive supervision and third party reactions …

The Reintroduction Of Rail-Oriented Communities In The St. Louis Region, Andrew G. Sisk

Theses

This thesis will focus on the potential for rail oriented development in the greater St Louis area, and methods to communicate that potential.

From many means of analysis, there is a serious problem with the "modern suburb" form of development. Whether in regards to the suburbs' long-term infrastructure costs, their social and psychological dysfunctions, the diminished resources they depend upon or the new, different tastes for housing, our region needs to find a new model.

The current type of growth has been in effect for over sixty years; only in the last fifteen has it drawn much criticism. Many have …

Ironic Advertising: Theory, Evidence And Practice, Ekin Pehlivan Yalcin Jan 2012

Ironic Advertising: Theory, Evidence And Practice, Ekin Pehlivan Yalcin

2012

Irony is one mechanism that advertisers use to attract consumer attention. Although ironic advertising (IA) is utilized in the mass media, it has received surprisingly little conceptual or empirical attention from marketing scholars. Perhaps one reason for this is that in marketing irony has been viewed primarily from a postmodern perspective. This is in marked contrast to psycholinguists where the phenomenon is approached from a more ecumenical, realist point of view. This dissertation is based on the premise that a realist approach to ironic advertising would produce insights for both marketing theory and practice.

This dissertation comprises of three papers …

Refining The Firm-Stakeholder Engagement Model: An Expanded Theory Of Salience And Firms' Responses To Stakeholder Influence, Elise Perrault Jan 2012

Refining The Firm-Stakeholder Engagement Model: An Expanded Theory Of Salience And Firms' Responses To Stakeholder Influence, Elise Perrault

2012

This dissertation revisits the theory of stakeholder salience set forth by Mitchell, Agle and Wood (1997), exploring the ways in which the salience model might be expanded to more fully capture the elements to which managers pay attention, as well as the accuracy of the attributes that define stakeholders' relationship with the firm. Two main questions are investigated: (1) what stakeholder elements affect salience? (2) Which of these stakeholder elements and attributes are most relevant to the explanation of salience? In a first tense, the nuances of the concept of stakeholder salience (Eesley & Lenox, 2006; Mitchell, Agle, & Wood, …

An Unstable Balance: Exploration, Exploitation, And Innovation Decline During Development, Craig Randall Jan 2012

An Unstable Balance: Exploration, Exploitation, And Innovation Decline During Development, Craig Randall

2012

he ability to innovate is considered central to firm performance and the consensus is that firms should balance exploration and exploitation innovation to succeed. Studies using an exploration/exploitation perspective have gained increasing interest, and have generally concluded that exploration innovation rates are too low. Researchers have concentrated on the early aspects of the innovation planning process: the Search, Portfolio Selection, and Design Phase, and have also studied the benefits of pursuing a serial or parallel pursuit of exploration and exploitation. Largely missing from exploration/exploitation innovation literature, however, is the development phase—which is among the longest and resource intensive phases of …

Three Essays On Market Anomalies And Efficient Market Hypothesis, Ehab Yamani

Finance and Real Estate Dissertations - Archive

This dissertation consists of three distinct essays. The first essay investigates the risk interpretation of the investment premium by empirically examining the fundamental view versus the sentimental view. I use VAR to break the investment beta into fundamental beta reflecting news about the future marginal productivity of investment, and financial beta reflecting news about discount rates. Overall, the results show that financial factors are the dominant driver of investment returns and they control the negative relation between investment and stock return. In the second essay, I examine the impact of financial contagion resulting from four global financial crises based on …

Individuals’ Formal Power And Their Social Network Accuracy, Joshua Eric Marineau Jan 2012

Individuals’ Formal Power And Their Social Network Accuracy, Joshua Eric Marineau

Theses and Dissertations--Management

Previous research has suggested that individuals differ in their accuracy of perceptions of the social environment, and some research suggests that powerful individuals in particular tend to be lazy, disinterested observers of the social world. A handful of field studies and lab experiments linking power with individuals’ perceptions of others’ social networks have generally supported this view. However, recent theory addressing the psychological consequences of power for the power-holder claim that in certain circumstances and for some kinds of social information, power is linked to increased accuracy of social information. This dissertation tests this idea by drawing on social network …

An Investigation Into Long-Run Abnormal Returns Using Propensity Score Matching, Sunayan Acharya

Theses and Dissertations--Business Administration

This is a study in two parts. In part-1, I identify several methods of estimating long-run abnormal returns prevalent in the finance literature and present an alternative using propensity score matching. I first demonstrate the concept with a simple simulation using generated data. The Effect Of Personal Scandal On Celebrity Athletes And Shopper’S Purchase Intentions And Attitude Favorability, Mary A. Graham

Theses and Dissertations--Retailing and Tourism Management

Athletes have become more than sports professionals; they are million dollar investments for brand images. Businesses worldwide have transitioned old promotional schemes to athlete endorsements and have experienced positive reactions to the public change. Athletes connected with consumers on a heroic level and translated the brand’s message to purchasers through the theory of transference of affect (White, Goddard, & Wilbur, 2009). Subsequently, there had been an equal rise in the caution businesses exercised as several athletes found occupancy in negative press. Those involved in scandals posed reputational risks for businesses and could reduce positive transference to consumers. The purpose of …
