The Internet Gaming Industry For Newbies, Cory Nebel

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

The United States internet gaming industry is one which, while many people are aware of its existence, very few fully understand. There remains a tremendous amount of confusion amongst the American public regarding whether or not gambling online in the U.S. is a legal activity. While most would claim to have heard reports that U.S. internet gambling is against the law, just as many people are able to quickly reference both friends and family who regularly gamble online. Through the use of secondary research, this paper will explore a wide range of pre-existing literature on both the internet gaming industry …

An Examination Of Middle Manager Innovation Behaviors And Institutional Factors Impact On Organizational Innovation In The Usa And Mexico, J. Lee Brown Iii Oct 2012

An Examination Of Middle Manager Innovation Behaviors And Institutional Factors Impact On Organizational Innovation In The Usa And Mexico, J. Lee Brown Iii

Theses and Dissertations in Business Administration

Several scholars have suggested mid-level management is an important factor that explains strategic outcomes (Wooldridge, Schmidt, & Floyd, 2008), but little research has investigated how this relationship actually works in multiple institutional environments. The resource-based view of the firm argues that competitive advantage is a function of resource heterogeneity and immobility (Barney, 1991) and the discretionary decisions made by managers about resource creation, development, and allocation (Amit & Shoemaker, 1993). These boundedly-rational managers (Simon, 1957) make these decisions facing an uncertain and complex internal and external environment. Thus, this dissertation extends the current research by developing and testing a new …

Corporate Social Responsibility And Firm Performance : Evidence From China, Ho Yin Wong Sep 2012

Corporate Social Responsibility And Firm Performance : Evidence From China, Ho Yin Wong

Lingnan Theses

A series of China’s product safety scandals have recently aroused global concerns over the business ethics and corporate social responsibility (CSR) in China. General public believe that companies have a responsibility towards the society that goes beyond their obligation of maximizing profits. The aims of this research are to understand the development of CSR in China over the past few years and measure the effects of CSR on firm performance by examining the standalone CSR reports for the period 2008-2009. The latest data indicate that Chinese companies have been making progress in their CSR practices. The results of this study …

Ethical Climate, The Perceived Importance Of Ethics And Social Responsibility, And Earnings Management, Mo Lam Sep 2012

Ethical Climate, The Perceived Importance Of Ethics And Social Responsibility, And Earnings Management, Mo Lam

Lingnan Theses

The practice of earnings management not only adversely affects the long-term economic prospects of a particular business enterprise by eroding public confidence in the company, but also may severely undermine the reputation of Hong Kong as an international financial and trading centre. Given the devastating effects of such practices resulting from corporate scandals such as Enron and WorldCom, earnings management has received unprecedented attention in the past decade. The incommensurability between the far-reaching effects of ethical issues relating to earnings management and the paucity of prior research on the subject in Hong Kong triggers my interest to study this topic. …

Is The Provision Of More Timely Earnings Information Good For The Chinese Stock Market? : Evidence From Investor Reactions To Management Earnings Forecasts, Shunan Zhao Sep 2012

Is The Provision Of More Timely Earnings Information Good For The Chinese Stock Market? : Evidence From Investor Reactions To Management Earnings Forecasts, Shunan Zhao

Lingnan Theses

Since 2001, publicly listed companies in China have been required by the Chinese Securities and Regulatory Commission (CSRC), the Shanghai Exchange and the Shenzhen Exchange to issue management earnings forecasts when they anticipate that earnings will be negative or change substantially from the previous period. This study examines the consequences and implications of this disclosure regulation. I find that the earnings forecasts are associated with an earlier incorporation of relevant earnings information into stock prices. However, I also find evidence that is consistent with the presence of overreactions to forecasts of extreme earnings changes. My study offers a cautionary note …

Individual Resistance To Change, Jeffrey C. Sandusky Sep 2012

Individual Resistance To Change, Jeffrey C. Sandusky

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis examines individual resistance to change and concludes that it is a constantly evolving process with many contributing factors. Defining resistance to change is a challenge within its own right. To account for the actions involved in change resistance is an even more complex undertaking. In this research, resistance to change is examined and explained using the influences of goals, participation, leadership effectiveness, and communication. These factors are expressed as the composition of what makes an individual resist or accept a change. Each of the four elements of resistance to change are examined independently and then synthesized into a …

Exploring The Dynamics And Modeling National Budget As A Supply Chain System: A Proposal For Reengineering The Budgeting Process And For Developing A Management Flight Simulator, Christoforos Kalloniatis Sep 2012

Exploring The Dynamics And Modeling National Budget As A Supply Chain System: A Proposal For Reengineering The Budgeting Process And For Developing A Management Flight Simulator, Christoforos Kalloniatis

Theses and Dissertations

In the Science of Economics, there has been a debate about the optimal fiscal and budgetary policy that should be implemented by governments. On the one side, the advocates of the Keynesian Theory assert that in recession times governments should run budgets with deficits, in order to stimulate the economy, while the supporters of the Balanced Budget Theory, on the contrary, underscores the need to reduce and even eliminate the budget deficits. However, previous experience shows that both theories often failed to accomplish their goals, because they underestimated a very sensitive parameter: national budgets are not just an estimate of …

An Economic Analysis Of Wine Grape Production In The State Of Connecticut, Jeremy L. Jelliffe Sep 2012

An Economic Analysis Of Wine Grape Production In The State Of Connecticut, Jeremy L. Jelliffe

Master's Theses

The Connecticut Wine and Vineyard industry has grown at a steady 3.9% per year over the past decade (ATTTB, 2009). Economic models estimate that the wineries sub-sector contributes $38 million dollars to the state economy and direct employment of 106 residents (Lopez et al., 2010). Programs to support and foster further growth of the industry and CT farm vineyard culture include the Department of Agriculture’s CT Wine Trail and the annual CT Wine festival (DOAG, 2010). Farmland preservation groups also support vineyard development since grape growing tends to secure tracts of farmland for long periods of time.

Investment analysis for …

Parental Role In Encouraging Sport Participation In Females, Jaime L. Berthold Sep 2012

Parental Role In Encouraging Sport Participation In Females, Jaime L. Berthold

Sport Management Undergraduate

Although still askew compared to male rates, female participation rates in sports have gone up since the introduction of Title IX in 1972. A plethora of research has been done to identify the various factors as to why females play sport, parental influence being a common social aspect. Research is lacking, however, in exploring the types of parental influence, specifically based on the gender of the parent. By surveying students at St. John Fisher College, this study examines the support/modeling roles commonly associated with the gender of the parent in regards to influencing their children to participate in sport. Results …

Comparative Analysis Of Dispersion Parameter Estimates In Loglinear Modeling: Applied To E-Commerce Sales And Customer Data, Scott Davis

Statistics

When loglinear models are applied to count data the issue of over-dispersion often arises. Moment and maximum likelihood estimation methods in accounting for over-dispersion are widely used because they allow for model checking tools such as Chi-square, F, and likelihood ratio tests. Here is a comparison between R functions that each uses one method; glm.nb uses MLE, and glm.poisson.disp uses MME. The Index of Dissimilarity and visual model selection (ECDF plots) are also incorporated. These are applied to sales data using product and customer information compiled over the last five years that was generously provided by an e-commerce company.
