Status, Power, And Apologies: How Status And Power Shape The Willingness To Apologize And The Perception Of Victims, Louis Lipani

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

Apologies are interpersonal tools that individuals employ to repair damaged relationships. Management scholars have largely ignored the role that power and status play in the apology process. Across three studies I experimentally manipulate power and status and examine the apology process via a workplace scenario. In Study 1 I propose that power and status have different implications with respect to one’s willingness to apologize. I orthogonally manipulate power and status and examine their effect on people’s willingness to apologize. I find that status, but not power, impacts one’s willingness to apologize. In Study 2 I posit and find that apologies …

Social Capital And Analyst Forecasts, Jing Dai Feb 2018

Social Capital And Analyst Forecasts, Jing Dai

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

This study examines the effect of social capital on analyst forecast accuracy. Using a county-level measure of social capital, I find that firms headquartered in counties with high social capital have greater forecast accuracy than firms headquartered in low social capital counties. In addition, I conduct two cross-sectional tests under conditions where social capital facilitates analyst forecast information collection and where social capital provides more assurance of information reliability. I find that the effect of social capital is more pronounced when firms’ headquarters are close to analyst brokerage firms. This is because geographically proximate analysts may have more channels to …

Do You Feel Like A Fraud? How Experiencing The Impostor Phenomenon Influences Consumption Choices, Emily Goldsmith

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

Most of us, at one point, have felt like a fraud. Usually we can overcome the negative feelings associated with feeling like a fraud by acknowledging why we deserve our accomplishments. However, there are times when, despite all external evidence, we still feel like an impostor. Specifically, we test the interaction between program assortment organization and the specificity of consumers’ motivation toward content for viewing on VOD to show that the size of choice set increases when program assortment is organized by content (genre) vs. a non-content specific alternative (recommendation) among consumers with an activity-focused (vs. content-focused) viewing motivation. We also provide preliminary evidence that consumer …

This paper is to investigate the relationship that Treasury bonds and Fed Funds have with the stock market. By employing an OLS regression model, this study finds the effect of Fed Funds is statistically and economically significant with regard to the stock market, also having the predicted …

In this paper, we use ordinary least squares regressions on Major League Soccer player data from 2015-2018 to determine the effect strikers and goalkeepers have on team success. In other words, what is the marginal impact of a good striker relative to a bad one? A good goalkeeper relative to a mediocre one? …

2018

Locational decisions are at the heart of international business strategy and this dissertation advances a dynamic view of the multinational corporation (MNC)-environment interaction by exploring the strategic, institutional and operational aspects of firm location decisions. In my first paper, I synthesize the literature on how institutions affect locational advantages and provide an organizing framework for the many levels and contexts in which these advantages can arise. This holistic framework helps identify inconsistencies between conceptual thinking and empirical verification and offers research avenues which are addressed in subsequent papers in this dissertation. In my second paper, I explore how learning and …

Over the past two decades, the growth of international new ventures has stimulated a great deal of interest among international entrepreneurship scholars to understand how these entrepreneurial start-ups internationalize given their resource deficiencies. Three Essays On The Effects Of The Exchange Act Rule 12h-6 On Cross-Listings Of Foreign Firms In The U.S. Market, Pratanphorn Piriyakul-Frye

ETD Archive

The 2007 Exchange Act Rule 12h-6 relaxes the deregistration requirements for the U.S.-listed foreign firms to leave the U.S. market, opening an opportunity to examine the benefit and costs of listing in the U.S market for foreign firms. Using a sample of all U.S.-exchange cross-listing events during 1998-2012, the results document that the U.S. exchanges are more likely to attract a larger pool of foreign listing activities in the post-Rule 12h-6 period. This increased attractiveness of the U.S market, however, is worrisome as the post-Rule 12h-6 listings appear to be more pronounced among firms from countries with weaker investor protection. …

Faith-Based Social Entrepreneurship: The Integration Of Faith And Business For Sustainable Social Impact, Christine Beech

Business as Mission Theses and Dissertations

Faith-based nonprofit organizations face myriad challenges in securing a sufficient donation base within a restricted pool of donors. This funding challenge often limits their ability to conduct their mission. To offset this challenge and model self-sufficiency, many faith-based organizations are looking to evolve into hybrid platforms that operate as faith-based social entrepreneurial ventures and manage to a triple bottom line of social good, financial impact, and spiritual mission. Yet even with the best of intentions, successfully merging a for-profit business model into a preexisting nonprofit organization often fails, even before the faith-factor is in play. This study of social entrepreneurship …

Proactive Coordination In Healthcare Service Systems Through Near Real-Time Analytics, Seung Yup Lee Jan 2018

Proactive Coordination In Healthcare Service Systems Through Near Real-Time Analytics, Seung Yup Lee

Wayne State University Dissertations

The United States (U.S.) healthcare system is the most expensive in the world. To improve the quality and safety of care, health information technology (HIT) is broadly adopted in hospitals. While EHR systems form a critical data backbone for the facility, we need improved 'work-flow' coordination tools and platforms that can enhance real-time situational awareness and facilitate effective management of resources for enhanced and efficient care. Especially, these IT systems are mostly applied for reactive management of care services and are lacking when they come to improving the real-time "operational intelligence" of service networks that promote efficiency and quality of …

However, as we further investigated the functionality and cost-efficiency or return of investment of GRE search list, we spotted many uncertainties and few solid and successful …
