Character Challenges American Christian Business Leaders Face In The Secular Digital Age, Kevin J. Kennedy Oct 2024

Character Challenges American Christian Business Leaders Face In The Secular Digital Age, Kevin J. Kennedy

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

In the digital age, Christian business leaders are a minority who are commonly expected to change their leadership priorities to fit within the secularized culture. These expectations for change in their leadership principles can generate character challenges to the very core of a Christian business leader’s beliefs forcing them to make decisions which pit the practice of their proclaimed faith against a secularized business practice. In these workplace challenges, the Christian business leader’s faith, freedom of conscience, freedom of speech, and freedom of religion compete with secularized practices accepted in today’s American culture. This research documents the insufficient understanding of …

Knocking On Heaven’S Door? Entrepreneurship, Firm Growth, And Health Risks, Jukka Partanen, Aino Tenhiälä, Teemu Kautonen, Markus Jokela, Daniel A. Lerner, Alexander Mckelvie

We examine the physical health consequences to entrepreneurs of firm growth and decline. Using register-based panel data (2000–2021), we find that entrepreneurs and hired CEOs are, on average, healthier and live longer than individuals from a socio-economically similar random sample from the general population. However, our findings also reveal that entrepreneurs are more likely to fall ill during their tenure and die younger than hired CEOs. Importantly, our findings demonstrate that both cumulative exposure to growth and episodic, rapid declines in sales and in the number of employees are equally taxing for entrepreneurs and hired CEOs.

The Economics Of The ‘Buy Local’ Trend, Susweta Ray, Konstantinos Giannakas Oct 2024

The Economics Of The ‘Buy Local’ Trend, Susweta Ray, Konstantinos Giannakas

Cornhusker Economics

The results of our study underline the significance of the explicit consideration of consumer and producer heterogeneity and the size and type of the locality when analyzing the market and welfare impacts of the ‘Buy Local’ trend. In addition to providing important new insights on the market and welfare impacts of the ‘Buy Local’ trend, our analysis can also provide a valuable theoretical grounding for empirical studies aimed at quantifying the economic impacts of the trend in different food product markets as well as the impact of current and emerging policies affecting the markets for local foods.

Reacting To Criticism: What Motivates Top Leaders To Respond Substantively To Negative Social Performance Feedback?, Myrto Chliova, Gabriella Cacciotti, Teemu Kautonen, Ignacio Pavez

All Works

The responses of organizations in situations of negative feedback from stakeholders are attracting increasing scholarly and societal attention. The literature has so far largely focused on situational factors that direct such responses, while calling for a more acute examination of individual factors. Anchored in Stakeholder Theory and Trait Activation Theory, this study examines how and to what extent prosocial motivation (a normative-oriented trait) and fear of failure (an instrumental-oriented trait) determine organizational leaders’ substantive responses to negative social performance feedback. We test our predictions on two waves of original survey data, including a conjoint experiment, on a sample of leaders …

Under Pressure: Employee Work Stress, Supervisory Mentoring Support, And Employee Career Success, Berrin Erdogan, Selin Kudret, Emily D. Campion, Talya N. Bauer, Julie Mccarthy, Bonnie Hayden Cheng

Business Faculty Publications and Presentations

Despite consistent findings that stressed employees benefit from social support, these employees do not always have access to such support. We propose and test a conceptual model suggesting employee work stress will negatively affect supervisory career and psychosocial mentoring support. Drawing from social exchange theory, we predict this will indirectly affect employee career success (lower career satisfaction and promotability ratings, fewer promotions), and that the relationship between employee work stress and lower supervisory mentoring support can be explained by lower levels of work engagement experienced by, and attributed to, stressed employees. We tested our model across three studies. In Study …

Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology Faculty Papers

The World Health Organization has designated Pseudomonas aeruginosa as a critical pathogen for the development of new antimicrobials. Bacterial viruses, or bacteriophages, have been used in various clinical settings, commonly called phage therapy, to address this growing public health crisis. Here, we describe a high-resolution structural atlas of a therapeutic, contractile-tailed Pseudomonas phage, Pa193. We used bioinformatics, proteomics, and cryogenic electron microscopy single particle analysis to identify, annotate, and build atomic models for 21 distinct structural polypeptide chains forming the icosahedral capsid, neck, contractile tail, and baseplate. We identified a putative scaffolding protein stabilizing the interior of the capsid 5-fold …

Social Comparison And Self-Determination In Luxury Consumption Motivations, Maria Petrescu, Jose Ribamar Siqueira, Costinel Dobre, Selima Ben Mrad, Anca-Milovan Ciuta, Aycan Kara

Publications

This study integrates social comparison theory and self-determination theory to examine the roles of escapism, conformity, and individual cultural values in shaping luxury brand attitudes. Concepts related to consumer upward and downward social comparison are complemented by aspects related to self-determination and autonomy. Drawing on survey data from the United States and Colombia, the research employs partial least squares structural equation modeling and fuzzy-set qualitative comparative analysis (fsQCA) to investigate the complex drivers of luxury consumption. The findings reveal that escapism and conformity, complementary motivations grounded in social comparison and self-determination theories, positively influence luxury brand attitudes. Furthermore, individual cultural …

Building Relationships: A Perspective On How To Achieve Teaching Success In Study Abroad Programs, Steven Bauer Oct 2024

Building Relationships: A Perspective On How To Achieve Teaching Success In Study Abroad Programs, Steven Bauer

All Faculty Open Access Publications

Study abroad programs have become increasingly popular in recent years as vehicles to prepare students for the global work environment. This paper describes a perspective on how to maximize teaching effectiveness in these programs via developing personal relationships. Based on the teaching of a Principles of Marketing course in Florence, Italy, the author discusses how the special characteristics of the study abroad program enabled the formation of deep faculty-student and peer relationships. Key faculty-student relationship factors were connections outside the classroom, career discussions, and assignment/exam reviews, while key peer relationship factors were interactions between students outside of class and field …

Course-Skill Atlas: A National Longitudinal Dataset Of Skills Taught In U.S. Higher Education Curricula, Alireza Javadian Sabet, Sarah H. Bana, Renzhe Yu, Morgan R. Frank

Economics Faculty Articles and Research

Higher education plays a critical role in driving an innovative economy by equipping students with knowledge and skills demanded by the workforce. While researchers and practitioners have developed data systems to track detailed occupational skills, such as those established by the U.S. Department of Labor (DOL), much less effort has been made to document which of these skills are being developed in higher education at a similar granularity. Here, we fill this gap by presenting Course-Skill Atlas – a longitudinal dataset of skills inferred from over three million course syllabi taught at nearly three thousand U.S. higher education institutions. To …

Brawny Brackets: Connecting The Dots From Layout Design To Pull Flow, Rick Hardcopf, Vijay Kannan, Jonathan Ebbeler

Management Faculty Publications

Lean production (“Lean”) is a topic frequently taught in undergraduate and graduate operations/supply chain management courses. Lean's “pull system” is a common component of the instruction, and several useful simulations have been developed that allow students to experience a pull system firsthand. While existing simulations focus on the mechanics of a pull system, the Brawny Brackets simulation focuses on improving “flow”—that is, framing a pull system in the context of layout design and batch sizing, and the waste associated with jumbled flow patterns. The robust and flexible simulation allows instructors to expand or contract the topics taught to match the …

The Status Of Women Leaders In Utah Business: A 2024 Update, Shirlayne Quayle, Susan R. Madsen, Robyn Blackburn

Marketing and Strategy Faculty Publications

In 2014, the Utah Women & Leadership Project (UWLP) released a research and policy brief titled “The Status of Women Leaders in Utah Business.”1 The brief was updated in 2018 to determine what, if any, progress had been made in women’s leadership within Utah’s business sector.2 Unfortunately, in most areas, instead of making progress, the percentage had decreased. Now, six years later, we are providing yet another update. In each brief, we compare Utah data with national data and review the applicable literature addressing women in the highest levels of business leadership, including C-level positions and presence on …

Waging A Global Trade War Alone: The Cost Of Blanket Tariffs On Friend And Foe, Edward J. Balistreri, Christine Mcdaniel

Yeutter Institute International Trade Policy Review

We use an advanced model of the global economy to consider a set of scenarios consistent with the proposal to impose a minimum 60% tariff against Chinese imports and blanket minimum 10% tariff against all other US imports. The model’s structure, which includes imperfect competition in increasing-returns industries, is documented in Balistreri, Böhringer, and Rutherford (2024). The basis for the tariff rates is a proposal from former President Donald Trump (see Wolff 2024). We consider these scenarios with and without symmetric retaliation by our trade partners. Our central finding is that a global trade war between the United States and …

Why Tariffs Are A Tax On American Consumers, Timothy Meyer Oct 2024

Why Tariffs Are A Tax On American Consumers, Timothy Meyer

Cornhusker Economics

Summary

The takeaway from this article should be that tariffs are a political tool, not an economic one. They do raise prices and revenue, but not as much as advertised (by either side).

At its core, Economics is the study of how scarcity is solved. That is, how limited resources are best utilized. Time and time again, Adam Smith’s idea that the invisible hand of markets would guide us to welfare-maximizing solutions, largely through specialization and trade. It’s why most of us specialize in one career and trade our hard-earned money for goods and services instead of producing them at …
