Trucks, Trains, And Barges: For Brazilian Soybeans, It’S Not Your Grandpa’S Infrastructure Anymore, Fabio Mattos Oct 2024

Trucks, Trains, And Barges: For Brazilian Soybeans, It’S Not Your Grandpa’S Infrastructure Anymore, Fabio Mattos

Cornhusker Economics

In the popular movie “Planes, Trains & Automobiles”, the tagline said, “Steve Martin had no reason to panic… until John Candy came along”. In the soybean market, we could say, “We had no reason to panic… until Brazil came along”. Brazil has been rapidly growing its soybean production for the last 30 years and has recently become the largest exporter in the world. In 2024/25, USDA estimates that Brazil will account for 58% of soybean exports worldwide, followed by the United States with 28%. These are roughly the numbers for 2023/24 and 2022/23 as well.

Still, despite the massive growth …

Buying From A Competitor: A Model Of Knowledge Spillover And Innovation, Dominique Lauga, Matthew Selove, Mohammad Zia Oct 2024

Buying From A Competitor: A Model Of Knowledge Spillover And Innovation, Dominique Lauga, Matthew Selove, Mohammad Zia

Business Faculty Articles and Research

Many firms buy a production input from a competitor. However, managers often worry that this supply relationship may give their competitor valuable knowledge about new product innovations. We develop a two-period model in which a firm can buy an input from a competitor or a third party in each period. In order to innovate, the firm must invest in improving the input, which results in its supplier learning to produce a higher quality input. We show that buying from the competitor: (i) increases short-term profits by softening price competition and (ii) may reduce long-term profits by preventing investment in innovation. …

Self Less: A Book Talk Featuring Dr. Len Jessup, Len Jessup

Lincy Institute Events

The Lincy Institute hosted a book talk with Len Jessup, Ph.D., author of Forbes and Amazon best-selling book, “Self Less: Lessons Learned from A Life Devoted to Servant Leadership, in Five Acts.”

Self Less follows Jessup’s story of emotional vulnerability. Blending personal narrative with research, Jessup argues selfless leaders can maximize impact by guiding teams, not controlling them. He stresses the power of constant learning, surrounding yourself with people far smarter than you, and service to others. For leaders seeking to create meaningful change through personal growth, Jessup provides inspiration along with practical advice on inclusive leadership and securing stakeholder …

Estimating The Economic Impact Of A Natural Disaster On The Workforce Resiliency: An Analysis Of The Virginia Beach - Chesapeake - Norfolk Metropolitan Statistical Area, Robert M. Mcnab, Yin-Hsuen Chen, George Mcleod

Presentations, Lectures, Posters, Reports

In this paper, we explore the potential economic impacts associated with a major hurricane making landfall in Hampton Roads. We estimate the direct damages from a Florence-like Category 3 hurricane with a 3.6 feet tidal offset are estimated at $15.6 billion, equivalent to 10% of the 2022 regional GDP. If we apply existing flood insurance rates to these projected damages, we estimate that the total economic impact would exceed $12 billion with a short-term loss of more than 76,000 jobs. The job losses are concentrated in sectors that provide services to households which would bear the brunt of damages during …

Are Fairness Perceptions Related To Moral Licensing Behavior? Evidence From Tax Compliance, Donna Bobek, Amy Hageman, Cass Hausserman Oct 2024

Are Fairness Perceptions Related To Moral Licensing Behavior? Evidence From Tax Compliance, Donna Bobek, Amy Hageman, Cass Hausserman

Business Faculty Publications and Presentations

This study investigates how the presence, and subsequent repeal, of a tax incentive for a prosocial behavior influences fairness perceptions and tax compliance for those who are and are not eligible for the incentive. Results of a multi-round experiment with 309 U.S. taxpayers show that individuals who engage in the prosocial behavior of making a charitable donation do not exhibit moral licensing behavior. Instead, those who give, versus do not give, engage in higher levels of tax compliance. In fact, we even observe consistency for those with the most motivation to morally license—those who donate to charity but also perceive …

Catalysts Of Change: How Social Movement Organizations Accelerate Shifts In Social Norms, Katie A. Apker, Michelle Blood Checketts, Taeya M. Howell, Lisa Jones Christensen, Ben William Lewis, Gordon N. Scott Oct 2024

Catalysts Of Change: How Social Movement Organizations Accelerate Shifts In Social Norms, Katie A. Apker, Michelle Blood Checketts, Taeya M. Howell, Lisa Jones Christensen, Ben William Lewis, Gordon N. Scott

Faculty Publications

We examine how social movement organizations (SMOs), particularly third-party rating agencies, can catalyze rapid shifts in social norms among an organizational population. We propose that rating agencies can instigate new social norms by defining appropriate and acceptable standards of performance that prompt organizations to realign their behaviors to mirror these new standards, thereby accelerating changes in shared understandings regarding appropriate firm behavior. We tested our theory by analyzing how members of the S&P 500 index adapted to a new gender diversity rating by KLD Research & Analytics, focusing on the acceptance and implementation of gender diversity standards on corporate boards …

[Abstract For] Excel Functions For Option Prices And Greeks Without Vba, Tom Arnold, Joseph Farizo, Jonathan M. Godbey

Finance Faculty Publications

The =LAMBDA function within Excel provides a powerful new tool for investors and analysts. In this treatment, we demonstrate =LAMBDA functions that calculate an option’s intrinsic value, price, and Greeks based on the Black-Scholes model. We additionally construct an =ALLGREEKS function within Excel’s built-in =MAKEARRAY function that quickly produces option prices and Greeks given six parameters: the underlying spot price (S), strike price (X), annual return volatility (V), days to maturity (DTM), days in a year (DIY), and the annual risk-free rate (RF). In addition to writing this guide on how to create these useful functions, we provide a downloadable …

Seeing The Whole Together Through Relational Mapping: A Method For Engaging In Complex Systems Change, John Paul Stephens Oct 2024

Seeing The Whole Together Through Relational Mapping: A Method For Engaging In Complex Systems Change, John Paul Stephens

Faculty Scholarship

Complex global challenges cut across organizational and sectoral boundaries, increasing calls for holistic responses. Seeing the whole across diverse stakeholders is challenging for participants in complex systems, yet doing so is essential for engaging effectively in systems change. A promising new method known as relational mapping, based on relational coordination theory, has been used to facilitate complex systems change. Here, we propose that relational mapping can be applied to help participants (1) see the whole in relation to the parts, (2) share their explicit and tacit knowledge, (3) engage in dialogue across distinct perspectives supported by the map as a …

Can Tourist Engagement Enhance Tourist Behavioural Intentions? A Combination Of Pls-Sem And Fsqca Approaches, Siamak Seyfi, S. Mostafa Rasoolimanesh, Ali Vafaei-Zadeh, Kourosh Esfandiar

Research outputs 2014 to 2021

This study aims to investigate the effects of tourist engagement dimensions on revisit and Word of Mouth (WOM) intentions of heritage tourists. The data were collected from domestic tourists in the heritage city of Kashan, Iran. To analyse the collected data, this study applies Partial Least Squares–Structural Equation Modelling (PLS-SEM) as a symmetric analysis technique, as well as fuzzy-set Qualitative Comparative Analysis (fsQCA) as an asymmetric analysis approach to strengthen the findings. The findings of PLS-SEM showed the significant effect of the absorption dimension on revisit intention, whereas these results demonstrated the significant effects of the dimensions of interaction, and …

Consumer Possessed: A Comment On Assessing Belk’S “Possessions And The Extended Self”, A. Fuat Firat Oct 2024

Consumer Possessed: A Comment On Assessing Belk’S “Possessions And The Extended Self”, A. Fuat Firat

Marketing Faculty Publications

While outstanding in observing the contemporary experience of being a “consumer” to become a “canonical article” in consumer research, as Thompson deftly analyzes, Belk’s “Possessions and the Extended Self” is subject to varied traps of remaining within the “mainstream marketing’s ideological boat.” This commentary attempts to highlight these ideological traps as we hopefully escape contemporary capitalism’s system of production of consumer subjectivity.
