An Illustration Of Using Adaptive Data Mining To Develop Strategic Knowledge Bases For Student Retention, Pi-Sheng Deng, Abhijit Chaudhury
An Illustration Of Using Adaptive Data Mining To Develop Strategic Knowledge Bases For Student Retention, Pi-Sheng Deng, Abhijit Chaudhury
Information Systems and Analytics Department Faculty Journal Articles
Technological development has engaged educational institutions in fierce global competition. To be competitive in meeting the changing needs of today’s student population, educational institutions find it imperative to prioritize student retention efforts and to develop strategies that interact with students to effectively provide additional value and service. In this study we developed a two-module system: a decision tree for predicting a student’s decision to stay until graduation and an affinity analysis algorithm for identifying the relationship between student attributes and student decisions. We followed a three-phase-six-stage adaptive data mining cycle in developing a knowledge base for student retention strategies. The …

When Identities Collide: Organizational And Professional Identity Conflict And Employee Outcomes, Kathryn Ostermeier, Peter Anzolitto, Danielle Cooper, Julie Hancock
When Identities Collide: Organizational And Professional Identity Conflict And Employee Outcomes, Kathryn Ostermeier, Peter Anzolitto, Danielle Cooper, Julie Hancock
Management Department Faculty Journal Articles
Purpose
While many workers have both professional and organizational identities, which can have conflicting expectations, little is known about this specific and common form of identity conflict. The purpose of this research is to develop and test a measure of organizational and professional identity conflict (OPIC), which the authors define as a psychological conflict that individuals experience between who they feel they are supposed to be in their organization and who they feel they are supposed to be in their profession. The authors theorize that this identity conflict will lead to emotional exhaustion and psychological distress, further leading to turnover …
Managing Goal Heterogeneity In Strategic Initiatives, Erim Ergene, Steven Floyd, Seray Ergene
Managing Goal Heterogeneity In Strategic Initiatives, Erim Ergene, Steven Floyd, Seray Ergene
Management Department Faculty Journal Articles
Strategic initiatives are temporary group undertakings designed to renew organizational capabilities and are crucial to organizational performance. Despite the inherent goal heterogeneity stemming from individual, departmental, organizational, and initiative levels, research conceptualizes goals as unitary within the team. Our objective is to explore ways to manage goal heterogeneity for the successful development of strategic initiatives within the intraorganizational context. We argue that organizational controls and decision comprehensiveness can be effective in mitigating the negative effects of heterogeneity. This will help facilitate a group of individuals in behaving as a team and being committed to the agreed-upon task at hand. We …
Cancel Anytime! How Easy Cancellation Options Enhance Purchase Intentions For Services That Require Long-Term Commitments, Sohyeon Park, Kacy Kim, Seolwoo Park, Yung Kyun Choi, Sukki Yoon
Cancel Anytime! How Easy Cancellation Options Enhance Purchase Intentions For Services That Require Long-Term Commitments, Sohyeon Park, Kacy Kim, Seolwoo Park, Yung Kyun Choi, Sukki Yoon
Marketing Department Faculty Journal Articles
The authors recognize that an uncertain environment associated with prolonged pandemic conditions have made consumers reluctant to make long-term contractual commitments in various retail contexts. Hypothesizing that retailers might offer cancellation options to motivate consumers to undertake long-term commitments, the authors conduct two studies in which cancellation messages accompany ads for an online language course and a gym membership. Findings indicate that retailers can alleviate the pressures associated with long-term commitment decisions and can heighten purchase intentions by providing cancel options for consumers who register for services requiring long-term but not short-term commitments. Perceived goal achievability is identified as an …
On Teaching Multi-Criteria Decision Making With A Robot Assistant, Chen Zhang, Hakan Saraoglu, David A. Louton
On Teaching Multi-Criteria Decision Making With A Robot Assistant, Chen Zhang, Hakan Saraoglu, David A. Louton
Information Systems and Analytics Department Faculty Conference Proceedings
We propose a system and method for a robot assistant for teaching multi-attribute decision making (MCDM). Through questions and answers in natural language, the robot assistant learns the user’s preferences on multiple criteria involving a selection decision and makes recommendations using data on each criterion and the learned user preferences. It will include a use-case demonstration where NAO the robot will assist a human in forming a simple portfolio of mutual funds. Presenters will illustrate the architecture of the robot assisted MCDM and describe a method that is extensively used to structure complex decision problems and has been applied to …
An Investigation On The Role Of Positive Psychological Constructs On Educational Outcomes In Business Schools, Eileen Kwesiga, Katharina Spraul, Baniyelme D. Zoogah
An Investigation On The Role Of Positive Psychological Constructs On Educational Outcomes In Business Schools, Eileen Kwesiga, Katharina Spraul, Baniyelme D. Zoogah
Management Department Faculty Journal Articles
Business schools are increasingly interested in empowering students to be more competent and driven for social changes through service learning. However, studies examining the role of positive traits and cross-cultural differences of service-learning education are limited. As a result, we leveraged positive psychology reasoning to explore the relationship between positive behavior as indicated by compassion, ethical leadership, perceived supervisory support and service-learning benefits for students (N = 272; n = 59 teams) in the United States of America (U.S.) and Germany. We used hierarchical linear modeling (2-Level model) to find main effects of relational compassion, ethical leadership, perceived supervisory support, …

Understanding The Business Model Of Content Creation, Taylor Vahey
Understanding The Business Model Of Content Creation, Taylor Vahey
Honors Projects in Communication
Individuals who post niched consistent content to social media platforms have grown audiences, which presents an opportunity for content creators to monetize the attention their posts receive. Both content creators and marketing practitioners are using trial and error processes to learn how to utilize the newest online promotion strategy; influencer marketing. This research aims to outline the business operations from the perspective of the influencer. Research on all aspects of this industry is insufficient, with only a few hundred published peer-reviewed articles on the topic available. Most of the research focuses on the perspective of the audience or the marketing …
The Interaction Between Spending Policies And Asset Allocation For College And University Endowment, Ryan Erickson
The Interaction Between Spending Policies And Asset Allocation For College And University Endowment, Ryan Erickson
Honors Projects in Finance
The analysis revealed better combinations of asset allocation and spending policy for college and university endowments that efficiently balance the desirable outcomes of stable spending in real terms against maintaining the purchasing power of the endowment over time (intergenerational equity). Using the variability and correlation of historical asset class returns, we created a forward-looking, projection-based, multivariate Monte Carlo simulation of individual asset class returns. The simulation incorporates the relationships between inflation and asset class returns, and the relationships among asset class returns. The projected time series of asset class returns produced a time series of endowment portfolio returns given an …
The Feminization Of Human Resources And How It Affects Women's Careers, Courtney Wegrzyn
The Feminization Of Human Resources And How It Affects Women's Careers, Courtney Wegrzyn
Honors Projects in Management
Over the past 50 years, women have advanced into managerial roles in the workplace at exponential rates (Beller, 1982; Scarborough, 2017). However, hiring and promotions based on societal norms and bias have often accentuated or hampered the balance of gender in certain industries (Gaucher et al., 2011; Tambe et al., 2019). The purpose of the present study is to research the differences in gender equality, perceptions, and representation in the often-feminized industry of Human Resources. This research outlines the historical progression of gender balance in the workplace and reviews societal pressures and cycles that lead to the manifestation of these …
