The task of creating a public will is daunting in any political system, but a democracy dedicated to the principles of participation and public deliberation faces specific challenges, including overcoming organized opposition that may not accept democratic tenets. In the sphere of education (and social reproduction more generally), business-influenced movements to reform public education question many of the established goals and norms of democratic education and thus may be the vanguard of such opposition. JOHNSON CITY (May 18, 2020) – The ETSU Health Osteoporosis Center will offer free osteoporosis screenings every Thursday in June to support osteoporosis awareness in the community and in recognition of Osteoporosis Month, celebrated during May. 

The free dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) scans will include one hip and the spine, with interpretation. This non-invasive test measures bone mineral density to assess its strength. 

The ETSU Health Osteoporosis Center, located at 2109 W. Market St., Room 143, promotes research; provides diagnostic, therapeutic and preventive services; and facilitates educational opportunities for the public and health care professionals.

Based on gender role congruence theory, this research sought to understand how consumer perceptions differ for masculinized and feminized products when they are presented by the opposing gender. Additionally, our research sought to understand what role—if any—political affiliation played in the consumer’s perception of the products presented. The results of this study were inconclusive due to a data collection error, however, the study itself serves as a good framework for answering the question of interest and should be rerun to draw meaningful conclusions.

JOHNSON CITY (May 15, 2020) – Across the region resilient workers, makers and volunteers are dedicated to supplying the personal protective equipment health care professionals need to fight the COVID-19 pandemic. One such example is a regional effort underway to manufacture face shields.

JOHNSON CITY – (May 12, 2020) Future teachers who are part of the Class of 2020 at East Tennessee State University moved to the head of the class with their scores on the edTPA assessment. edTPA is a national performance-based assessment for students seeking initial licensure.  Some states, including Tennessee, require its teachers to have a passing score on edTPA for licensure.

Of the 165 undergraduate and graduate students from across ETSU’s educator preparation programs who recently took the edTPA exam, 95 percent earned a passing score.

Many online retailers and some manufacturers/service providers have recently been engaging in questionable practices, where product reviews are often fabricated and/or posted without sufficient clarity and objectivity. Across an exploratory study and two main studies, we empirically examine this phenomenon and observe a pattern of effects that suggests that review valence (i.e., the average number of rating-stars a product receives) influences product attitudes and intentions, but that these outcomes are significantly impacted by the extent to which consumers are aware of potentially deceptive online review practices. Throughout the nation, women are building and running successful businesses. In 2016, the Utah Women & Leadership Project (UWLP) asked whether Utah was a good place for women to start and run businesses. The answer to that question was released in a research and policy brief titled, “The Status of Women and Entrepreneurship in Utah,” which became part of a series that focused on understanding the status of women’s leadership in Utah’s politics, education, nonprofits, business, government, and other settings.
