An Empirical Comparison Of The Extended Parallel Process Model With The Terror Management Health Model, David M. Hunt, Omar Shehryar Aug 2022

An Empirical Comparison Of The Extended Parallel Process Model With The Terror Management Health Model, David M. Hunt, Omar Shehryar

Marketing Faculty Publications and Presentations

The Extended Parallel Process Model posits that fear-appeal messages are processed only when message recipients perceive a critical level of threat. The more recent Terror Management Health Model suggests that, in addition to level of perceived threat, the nature of the threat also influences how target audiences process fear appeals. Specifically, fear appeals that utilize the threat of death as a consequence trigger both conscious and nonconscious responses that influence message recipients’ health-related decisions. Accounting for the influence of consciousness of death helps explain maladaptive responses that extant theory has been unable to explain. Results from an experiment indicate that, …

Structural equations modeling, using data from 1,017 American consumers, successfully confirmed the significant influences of trust in media and government on BCI and the corresponding positive effect of BCI on fearfulness. Additionally, the negative effects of fearfulness on intentions to visit …

Two Essays On The Role Of Empathy In Consumer Response To User-Generated Content, Mohammadali Koorank Beheshti

Theses and Dissertations in Business Administration

Empathy is known to be the basis of all human interactions and an essential component of human psychology. Empathy includes a cognitive component (perspective-taking) and an affective component (e.g., emotional contagion). The two essays of my dissertation investigate how each of these components of empathy affect consumer responses to user-generated content.

Essay 1: Although both price and online review ratings are important cues in consumers’ product quality judgment, most previous studies have treated price and review ratings as separate inputs into consumer decision-making. The current research shows that the two cues are intertwined, such that consumers’ perception of the same …

What Is Xr? Towards A Framework For Augmented And Virtual Reality, Philipp A. Rauschnabel, Reto Felix, Chris Hinsch, Hamza Shahab, Florian Alt

Marketing Faculty Publications

Augmented Reality (AR), Virtual Reality (VR), Mixed Reality, and Extended Reality (often – misleadingly – abbreviated as XR) are commonly used terms to describe how technologies generate or modify reality. However, academics and professionals have been inconsistent in their use of these terms. This has led to conceptual confusion and unclear demarcations. Inspired by prior research and qualitative insights from XR professionals, we discuss the meaning and definitions of various terms and organize them in our proposed framework. As a result, we conclude that (1) XR should not be used to connote extended reality, but as a more open approach …

The Buzz Behind Alcohol Advertising: A Study Of How Alcohol Advertisements On Social Media Impact Behavior, Alexis Morgan Campbell

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Alcohol advertisements are known to be appealing and memorable, and several researchers have investigated what makes these advertisements so attractive. Several trends have emerged regarding the content within alcohol advertisements: themes of parties, celebration, and social success within television, magazines, and social media since the 1970s. Recently, several studies found that new themes in alcohol ads have been found to be popular, especially in social media advertisements (Campbell & Chung, 2022). The elaboration likelihood model (ELM) provides insight into why a person’s attitude could be more susceptible or why their behavior could be more easily influenced by certain types of …

Beyond Nutrition: Three Essays On The Effects Of Food Processing And Sustainability Labeling On Consumer Perceptions And Evaluations, Garrett J. Rybak

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Recent consumer trends reveal increasing demand for greater product transparency including how products are processed, the types of ingredients used, and the impact on the environment. As a result, food marketers often use a combination of processing, nutrient content, and/or sustainability claims to convey specific information to consumers. Considering these developments, several questions arise about how these claims affect consumer evaluations of healthfulness, sustainability, disease risk, and intent to purchase while considering the unregulated and regulated nature of many of these claims.

In Essay One, we extend our understanding of consumer responses to package claims by comparing the direct and …

In the first essay, by drawing on theories of balance, social identity, and cue consistency, this research seeks to explain how in a mutual consumption customer B tie to the brand (other customer brand tie) may have an influence on customer A (new customer) brand trust and behavioral intentions. This study introduces a model integrating these constructs in a service context where there is a high chance of social encounters between and within customers and employees. The model also seeks to investigate the moderating effects of employee rapport building behavior, customer-to-customer closeness relationship, employee-to-employee positive interaction, and employee-to-employee incivility behavior …

Evaluating The Benefit Of The Islamic Banking System In Uae (United Arab Emirates), Hadjer Abir Bensaha

Undergraduate Honors Capstone Projects

A ubiquitous number of articles have examined the finance and banking systems used throughout the world (conventional). This paper aims to provide some evidence of the value of the Islamic banking system and why the current non-Islamic systems should implement certain aspects of the Islamic finance system. To make this claim, I rely on secondary research data to support my arguments. Islamic banking has experienced rapid global growth. This paper uses the United Arab of Emirates as the scope of this research because both banking systems have operated in the UAE for several years. Therefore, existing data and statistics from …

“We’Re Still Here:” Evaluating Academic Library Instagram Posting During The Covid-19 Pandemic, Julie Turley

Publications and Research

Academic libraries use social media to build community and increase visibility and engagement among followers–students, faculty, and staff. Instagram, in particular, is a popular social media platform used by a college-aged demographic. Academic library Instagram administrators create and maintain Instagram accounts to post visual content to promote the physical library and library services. In March 2020, the COVID-19 pandemic closed the college campuses of the New York City-based City University of New York (CUNY) system to all but “essential staff” and compelled non-essential employees to work from home. During the first few months of 2020, college library Instagram administrators in …

Financial Literacy And Consumer Well-Being: Examining The Role Of Gender Role Ideology, Lorena Garcia Ramon Aug 2022

Financial Literacy And Consumer Well-Being: Examining The Role Of Gender Role Ideology, Lorena Garcia Ramon

Theses and Dissertations

Financial literacy, or the ability to process economic information and make informed decisions about financial planning, wealth accumulation, debt, and pensions, has been linked to beneficial financial behaviors that support financial well-being. Despite these benefits, consumers tend to underperform in financial literacy tests with women generally faring worse than men. This dissertation draws from gender roles literature and Expectancy-Value Theory to examine how, why, and when traditional attitudes regarding societal gender roles (i.e., gender role ideology) hinder women’s financial literacy and willingness to acquire financial knowledge. Moreover, it examines how financial literacy and willingness to …

The Effects Of Consumer Loan Application Formats And Advertised Terms On Consumer Borrowing Decisions, Alicia M. Johnson Aug 2022

The Effects Of Consumer Loan Application Formats And Advertised Terms On Consumer Borrowing Decisions, Alicia M. Johnson

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Consumers continue to demonstrate a willingness to accrue more debt. They are also more accepting of increased repayment risk via the acceptance of longer loan terms. Extant research on consumer borrowing consists primarily of experiments designed to assess consumer choices and understand how consumers evaluate loan attributes in relation to one another within consumer borrowing contexts (Kamleitner, Hoelzl, and Kirchler 2012; Ranyard et al., 2006). Thus, prior research examines consumer responses to loan information rather than the generation of loan parameters at the time of financing. With important implications for consumers, marketers of financial products, academic researchers, and federal regulators, …

Conspicuous Asceticism: Collapsing Consumers' Hungry Ghosts, Ash Zareian Aug 2022

Conspicuous Asceticism: Collapsing Consumers' Hungry Ghosts, Ash Zareian

Theses and Dissertations

The author investigates an emerging construct called conspicuous asceticism expositioned from a narcissism-centric view. The understanding of this construct is approached by drawing an idiomatic semantic parallel in opposition to conspicuous consumption and by utilizing its current theoretical framework of narcissism. Moreover, this paper seeks to extend conspicuous consumption’s theoretical framework as synonymous with the construct of compulsive consumption. Furthermore, I illustrate that consumers must transcend narcissism through engaging in treatment modalities requisite to operationalize a pioneering effort in which consumers can engage in marketing campaign efforts to advertise conspicuous ascetic contexts. This dissertation gleans from extant literature in sociology, …

Purchase Intentions For Hospitality Products With Negative Online Reviews: The Joint Effects Of Rating Disadvantage, Attitude, And Sales Promotion, Wenjia Han

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

Consumers engage with online reviews when making purchase decisions, especially for experience goods such as hospitality services. Negative online reviews (NOR) harm business revenue and hospitality operators try to minimize the consequence by responding to NOR. However, management responses are hard to implement and could generate adverse effects. This study suggests that the impact of NOR on product choice can be eradicated by launching an appropriate sales promotion. Based on prospect theory, choice theory, social judgment theory, and cognitive dissonance theory, this study examines how different proportions of NOR influence consumer purchase intention for two hospitality sectors – restaurant and …

Can I Choose My Offer: How Choice On Sales Offer Impacts Consumer Purchase Decision?, Atmadeep Mukherjee

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

While making a purchase decision consumers tend to evaluate various assortments. Most of the research in choice literature has focused on the impact of focal product assortment size and consumer preferences. Building on choice literature and sales promotion this dissertation argues that choice on sales offers, particularly free offers, will have a positive effect on purchase evaluations and the effect gets accentuated under certain …
