Within this project I endeavor to translate a series of poems from seven postmodern female Spanish poets, exploring the challenges and idiosyncrasies of not only the migration between languages, but those specifically between Spanish and English as well as those particular to poetry translation. Of course, there are inherent limits to this process. Regarding the differences between English and Spanish, such difficulties as the presence of naturally reflexive verbs, neutral pronouns, more efficient nominalization of adjectives, and the greater presence of the subjunctive tense in Spanish arise. The purpose of this study is to demonstrate how mid-eighteenth century notions of patria, nación, and Nuestra América predate latter nation-building constructs, particularly at the turn of the 19th century. Benedict Anderson's (1991) assertion that Spanish-American Creoles attained a sense of belonging to an "imagined community", towards the end of the 18thcentury,fails to take into account the limitations of print capitalism due to extremely low literacy rates and rare access to the printing press. The end of the nineteenth century witnessed an esthetic renewal in Latin American literature. The movement later dubbed modernismo would usher in a profound shift in the ars poetica of Spanish prose and poetry. Yet this revolution did not spread like fire; it coexisted with, and unevenly replaced, earlier artistic notions. Neftalí Ricardo Reyes Basoalto, whose pseudonym was to be Pablo Neruda, was born in the small Chilean town, Parral. His mother died two months after she gave birth to her son and two years later, Neruda’s father moved his small family to Temuco. After the Chilean military defeated the local Mapuche Indians, Temuco and the entire Araucano region was opened to settlers. With the extension of the railroad, Temuco soon became a bustling pioneer town. Many historians and literary experts have compared early 20th century Temuco to Frontier Oregon. Although Hanni Ossott (1946-2002) is considered a unique voice in Venezuelan poetry, no comprehensive studies of her work have yet been undertaken. This dissertation offers a critical reading of the poetry from her early and mid career, a period that encompasses both her best known and least known work. Ossott is mainly remembered for two books from the middle of her trajectory, Hasta que llegue el día y huyan las sombras and El reino donde la noche se abre. The topic is approached in three different manners: hybrid theory, academic perspectives, and poetry analysis. An application of hybrid theory facilitates the understanding of cultural identity within Chile. A discussion by three Chilean professors reveals the important themes of geographic location, generation, and language in both the production and reception of written contemporary Mapuche poetry. An analysis of selected of written Mapuche poetry depicts the unique conceptualizations of identity by contemporary Mapuche poets. As a result, this independent study shows how written contemporary Mapuche poetry is an appropriate indicator of the evolution of Mapuche hybrid identity.

Es tarea compleja ofrecer algo innovador sobre la obra de la escritora gallega Rosalía de Castro, ya que sus poemas, cuentos, novelas y demáa escritos han sido extensivamente estudiados por la crítica desde distintas aproximaciones teóricas. No obstante, no existe tanto énfasis en referencia a los aspectos fantásticos presentes en la obra de la autora. Si bien es fácil encontrar algunos acercamientos en relación a su novela El caballero de las botas azules (1867), casi no hay mención a los elementos fantásticos existentes en su poesía. [excerpt]

El Impacto De "Viernes" En La Poesía Venezolana, William Martínez

This essay presents a historical review of the poetic production in Venezuela in the 30's and 40's. It reviews the role that "Viernes," a poetic group, had in developing the modern literary movements in Venezuelan literature. The impact that several members of the group had while in and then later after their departure from the group is examined. Equally, the poetic influences inherited by the group, both national and international, are discussed. Finally, the essay deals with the dissolution of the group and its impact in the literature of Venezuela and Latin America after World War II.

The article analyzes the book Canto General, by Pablo Neruda.

Pablo Neruda's poetic history of Latin America, Canto General (1950), is perhaps best known for its lyricized defense of oppressed and subjugated peoples throughout Latin America, as the author had perceived them. This collection, organized into fifteen sections (often, though not always, linear in its chronicling of Latin American history), treats this social theme from Pre-Columbian times through the mid-Twentieth Century. This essay focuses on the construction of urban space through Gabriel Aresti's poetry during Franco's dictatorship. On the one hand, Aresti emphasizes the social injustices in the city between the new Basque bourgeoisie and the Castilian and rural Basque immigrants. On the other hand, the poet wants to retrieve Basque language and tradition as a reaction to a progressive cultural loss due to the presence of 'españolidad' and to urban changes. Therefore, this conflict generates the subjective and specific experience of a space that needs to negotiate cultural and social heterogeneity while articulating 'Basquism' and integrating the 'other'.

The Living World, Politics, And Nation: Nature And Discourse In The Poetry Of Nicolás Guillén, Mark J. Mascia

Through an analysis of key examples of Guillén's use of nature throughout his poetry, this article presents the argument that they all are fundamentally rooted in a configuration of nature as a living being and in an understanding of humanity's place as part of nature. For Guillén, nature is not simply something that he merely appreciates as a theme; rather, it is a vital element central to his view of the worid and to his development as a writer. The collections examined here are West Indies, Ltd., El son entero, and La paloma de vuelo popula.

This article illustrates how Lope de Vega, in his Rimas Humanas y Divinas Del Licenciado Tome de Burguillos, subverts idealized female beauty through the glorification of a more commonplace feminine object, while the time-honored poetic conventions which favored the former are deconstructed and replaced by a new anti-norm of female objectification.

The purpose of this article is to examine the ways in which Lope de Vega manipulates epistolas to serve his own ends with regards to language, both on a narrowly literary level and on a broader personal and even national one. What emerges is an epistola which blends both the self-evident art of poetry writing and critical speculation upon it, one which Lope consciously uses as a literary mode of vindication and defense for his ideas regarding proper discourse and as an attack on any type of discourse of which he disapproves.

This article examines the ways in which Neruda poeticizes and celebrates different foodstuffs in his Odas Elementales, and connects these ways to the larger themes present in his general corpus of work. These odes, which ennoble and glorify everyday food and drink items, are treated as animate, living entities, and are at times frequently linked to a political or social cause as well.
