Rosalia de Castro was a nineteenth-century Spanish Catholic writer now best-known for her novels, but her poetry is widely admired in the Spanish-speaking world as well. This devotional poem is written in the language of her native region of Galicia, and the translator hopes that this new version will awaken interest in Castro's work in the English-speaking world.

Un particular histórico firme es que fray Juan, durante el periodo de residencia en el Monasterio de la Encarnación de Ávila —de 1572 a 1577—, asiste al Capítulo de Almodóvar del Campo, diócesis de Ciudad Real, celebrado en agosto-septiembre de 1576. Con anterioridad a su encarcelamiento, pues, nuestro sujeto pasó por Torrijos y Toledo, un paso furtivo, realizado en grupo, en el que era indispensable moverse con celeridad. This article presents results of auto-ethnography, literary analysis, and fieldwork research to answer an underlying, perhaps unresolved, concern, relevant to this dossier: how can we produce an ethical dialogue as transnational Black Feminists, among Black Brazilian women, and North American Black women, in an ethical manner, while realizing that one may (not ever) be a part of the “carnival without you in it.” Fertile Earth/ Terra Fertil tells a long overdue epic story to an audience within the poetry: Black women, family members, other times a Black man, Brazil, white women, or “you,” undefined.
