History Of Utah State Prison 1850-1952, James B. Hill
Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this thesis is to present a general history of Utah State Prison in order that a record of that institution may be preserved. This phase of Utah history has long been neglected. It is hoped that a contribution has also been made to a better understanding of Utah's penal system.
The present penal system in use in the state of Utah had its beginning with the early Mormon settlements in Salt Lake Valley in 1847. The first laws and judicial bodies of the Mormons were very closely tied to their religious beliefs. The handling of criminals was …

Textual Parallels To The Doctrine And Covenants And Book Of Commandments As Found In The Bible, Ellis T. Rasmussen
Textual Parallels To The Doctrine And Covenants And Book Of Commandments As Found In The Bible, Ellis T. Rasmussen
Theses and Dissertations
The problem of this thesis is: What textual relationship does the Doctrine and Covenants of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints bear to the Bible, King James Version?
As a preliminary hypothesis, it has been assumed that there are phrases and clauses in the Doctrine and Covenants similar enough in construction and meaning to some of the phrases and clauses in the Bible to permit selection of samples from both that will parallel each other. Whether such parallel phrasing, when found, would appear to be a result of quoting, adapting, reiterating, renewing, alluding or simply coincidental construction constituted …
History Of The Provo Times And Enquirer 1873-1897, Robert D. Anderson
History Of The Provo Times And Enquirer 1873-1897, Robert D. Anderson
Theses and Dissertations
The home of the Provo Times and Enquirer was a typical Mormon town founded on the east shore of Utah Lake in 1849. While some Gentiles (non-Mormons) had moved into the area by 1873 when the first newspaper appeared, the community was still dominated and controlled by members of the Latter-day Saint Church, which was the cause of some tension.
Even though after twenty-four years of settlement Provo had well-established farms, businesses, and the beginnings of industry, it did not have a newspaper, although publications had been founded earlier in several other cities of the territory. In the winter of …
The Utah County Labor Movement, J. Kenneth Davies
The Utah County Labor Movement, J. Kenneth Davies
Theses and Dissertations
This thesis was begun as just a history of the labor movement in Utah County, but as the research for data proceeded it became more evident that the factors influencing the retardation and development of the movement were the important things to consider. As a consequence, the greater portion of this work is so devoted.

John J. Mcclellan, Tabernacle Organist, Annie Rosella Compton
Theses and Dissertations
In order to understand the significance of music in our culture, we must learn of music history. This history includes not only a few men who have been revered through the centuries, but many who, during their lifetime and in their locality or country, exerted influence to some degree.
Such a man was John Jasper McClellan. He studied under some of the world's great teachers and received their praise; founded the University of Michigan Symphony Orchestra; directed the Salt Lake Opera Company, the Salt Lake Choral Society, and the Salt Lake Symphony Orchestra; founded the Utah Conservatory of Music; taught …

The Tree Of Life Symbol; Its Significance In Ancient American Religion, Irene M. Briggs (Woodford)
Theses and Dissertations
Not too much is known today about religion of ancient Mesoamerica, and it will only be through an intensive comparative study of the various deities as presented in the heiroglyphic manuscripts and native writings, and of the symbolic religious art in the architectural and sculptural remains, that greater knowledge of the subject will be gained. The "Tree of Life," one of the most striking religious symbols of the area, may be one key to such knowledge.

Mormon Settlement Of Snake River Fork Country, 1883-1893, Norman Earl Ricks
Mormon Settlement Of Snake River Fork Country, 1883-1893, Norman Earl Ricks
Theses and Dissertations
The most interesting and important place in the world is where a man lives. His home becomes the finest place on earth regardless of its merits in relation to other habitats. After years of residence the history of the country takes on reality and significance and a long acquaintance reveals elements of romance and adventure that enhance ones love of his surroundings. This is one of the reasons for this thesis topic. During a young impressionable life the stories of Indians, trappers, pioneers, rustlers and polygamist, have been constantly a part of the environment of the author. Long trips in …

The Economic And Social History Of Bingham Canyon, Utah, Considered With Special Reference To Mormon-Gentile Synthesis, George M. Addy
Theses and Dissertations
This paper will be confined to the northern portion of the range though it might be noted that the topographical descriptions of the Bingham district apply in a general way to the southern district also. The northern Oquirrhs contain a number of sizeable canyons running either east or west from a central ridge seven thousand to eight thousand feet in altitude. Bingham Canyon, one of the largest of these, is located on the eastern slope of the range and drains into Salt Lake Valley.
A Survey Of Fiction Written By Mormon Authors And Appearing In Mormon Periodicals Between 1900 And 1945, Ross Stolworthy Esplin
A Survey Of Fiction Written By Mormon Authors And Appearing In Mormon Periodicals Between 1900 And 1945, Ross Stolworthy Esplin
Theses and Dissertations
Mormon periodical fiction has had a slow and painstaking development. Not much fiction of worth was produced prior to 1900, but by 1900 the antecedents of a future "mature" fiction were established.
The fiction of the years following those initial developments of fiction is largely, as yet, unexplored and unevaluated. It is my purpose in this study to map out the broad areas of this fiction and attempt to measure its literary value.
A Community Study Of Social Change In Goshen, Clark S. Knowlton
A Community Study Of Social Change In Goshen, Clark S. Knowlton
Theses and Dissertations
During the last two years, the author in the course of fulfilling class requirements in the Department of Sociology made a series of investigations into the social, economic, and political aspects of several towns and villages in Utah and Idaho. As a result, an interest developed in the process of social change within the social structure. Therefore, as a thesis problem, a community study of a small Mormon village analyzing social change in the institutions and mores was selected.

History Of The Cotton Mission And Cotton Culture In Utah, Ivan J. Barrett
History Of The Cotton Mission And Cotton Culture In Utah, Ivan J. Barrett
Theses and Dissertations
The writer, being interested in the agricultural project of cotton growing in early Dixie, and finding scarcely anything written on the subject, has gone into the original sources, histories, journals, diaries, etc., and found a reservoir of enlightenment regarding cotton culture in Utah's Dixie. He has tried to assemble from the most important sources, an informative yet interesting study of cotton culture in Utah. The writer in no wise pretends to have exhausted the subject, nor to have reached all the sources. Many of those early cotton growers who did most to produce this staple, kept no record of their …
History Of Drama In Ogden, Beth Browning
History Of Drama In Ogden, Beth Browning
Theses and Dissertations
Many cultural histories have been written of Utah, but not one of Weber County. The purpose of this thesis is to develop the history of drama in Weber County. Particular interest is given to the stage and its evolution. Also, I include the outstanding leaders of this art, because they are the builders of this history. The hypothesis is that the present-day drama owes much to our pioneers of Weber County. This thesis is written in commemoration of these pioneers for our Centennial Year, 1947.
An Analysis Of Twelve Speeches Of Parley Parker Pratt, Mormon Orator, Morris M. Clinger
An Analysis Of Twelve Speeches Of Parley Parker Pratt, Mormon Orator, Morris M. Clinger
Theses and Dissertations
The chief purpose of this investigation is to determine the elements of speech style, the motive appeals, and the use of the elements of interest which play the most characteristic roles in twelve of Parley P. Pratt's sermons. While all the speeches that Pratt delivered have not been studied, since there are likely hundreds of them of which we have no record, it is thought that this study is sufficiently broad to warrant the conclusions that the writer has drawn.
A brief biography is included as a part of this study that a better understanding of the man might be …
A Historical Study Of The Exploration Of Utah Valley And The Story Of Fort Utah, Ray C. Colton
A Historical Study Of The Exploration Of Utah Valley And The Story Of Fort Utah, Ray C. Colton
Theses and Dissertations
The exploration of Utah Valley and the history of Fort Utah is the story of the conquest and colonization of the American frontier. Discovered in the days of Western expansion, the Valley was identified with the principal factors in the development of the Intermountain West. It heard the chant of the gray robed Franciscan priests, became a favorite haunt of the trail blazing fur trapper and trader, was the site of the ancient rendezvous of the Indian, saw the gold seekers trudge wearily on to California, and with the founding of Fort Utah served as the springboard of Southern Utah …

Mural Of The Ground Breaking Ceremony For The St. George Latter-Day Saint Temple, J. Roman Andrus
Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this work was to plan and execute a mural for the Latter Day Saint Temple at St. George, Utah, depicting the ground breaking ceremony for the building of the Temple. The picturization of the event should be historically true, so far as possible, without sacrificing quality of design. Value, pattern, color, and idea should conform to the character and design of the building, and to the ceremonies performed therein.
