Forty years ago, I picked up a copy of Truman Madsen’s biography of B. H. Roberts, Defender of the Faith. About the same time, I also checked out of a college library Frank Cannon’s Under the Prophet in Utah. Even with my knowledge of Mormon history in its infancy, it was clear that these were very different men. Now two recent biographies have reaffirmed that point. In B. H. Susa Young Gates: Daughter Of Mormonism By Romney Burke, Dave Hall

Years ago, I asked a pioneering historian of Latter-day Saint women why there was no biography of Susa Young Gates. She replied that Gates’s reputation for being difficult meant no one was eager to spend enough time with her to write one. But the lack of a biography of this key figure among second-generation Church leaders left a serious gap in the historical literature. Recently, Romney Burke, a retired physician and great-grandson- in- law of Gates, sought to fill that gap with his Susa Young Gates: Daughter of Mormonism.

Wells: An Intimate History, Carol Cornwall Madsen reveals the rich and painful inner life of a woman who was for decades the most famous female member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Drawing on an extraordinary “paper trail of thousands of pages from diaries, letters, newspaper articles and editorials, and a volume of poetry” (vii), Madsen offers an astute and sympathetic portrait of a woman who accomplished and suffered much.

This thesis examines the life of Lydia Dunford Alder (1846–1923), who was a prominent but now nearly forgotten early Mormon writer, women’s rights activist, missionary, and leader of various women’s clubs. A respected member of the late-nineteenth– and early-twentieth-century Salt Lake City, Utah community, Alder was the colleague and friend of various distinguished Mormon leaders. While these leaders have been studied in-depth by scholars, Alder’s similar achievements have never been examined in scholarship. Joann Mortensen, a third great-granddaughter of King and Louisa Follett, has long been involved in documenting the lives of her ancestors. Her book, The Man Behind the Discourse, is the first published biography of King Follett, the man whose funeral sermon became known as one of the Prophet Joseph Smith's greatest discourses.

Maude Ewing Adams Kiskadden was born in Salt Lake City, Utah in 1872. Her mother, Annie Adams, was the daughter of first generation Mormons who trekked across the plains and an actress at the Salt Lake Theatre. Maude Adams began her acting career at the age of five in some of her mother’s plays. She continued to act into her adult years, achieving her greatest success as the character Peter Pan, first playing the role in the 1905 Broadway production.
