This court case, decided on August 28, 1996, presented the problem of tribal council authority to enter the tribe into binding contracts. The disputing parties in this case entered a contract for co-operation of casino activities at Four Bears Motor Lodge while Wilbur Wilkinson was part of the Tribal Council. When the council changed leadership, the validity of the contract between Bruce Lien Co. and the Three Affiliated Tribes was challenged by the new leadership who alleged that Wilkinson did not have the authority to bind the Three Affiliated Tribes to the contract. The Legacy Of Timur: A Small Rug At The Textile Museum, Carol Bier

Among the two hundred lots offered oh the block by Christie's from Bernheimer Family Collection of Rugs in February 1996, a small shaped rug with white ground was acquired by the Textile Museum. The rug was Lot 192, published in the catalogue as an East Persian saddle rug dating to the 19th century. The Textile Museum's interest in the piece was sparked by my hunch, based upon its design, that this rug is far more significant than its published attribution might suggest. A carefully conceived trefoil scroll implies a Timurid heritage. To read the design correctly, it should probably have …

This report summarizes the results of a 1993 survey by UMass Boston, and of previous archaeological fieldwork on Thompson Island, Boston, MA, including background research, documentary research, walkover reconnaissance, and subsurface testing with shovel test pits and 1 meter square excavation units. Despite the fact that many parts of the island have not yet been surveyed, twenty prehistoric sites are now known, an unusually high density for the Boston Harbor Islands. Components range in age from Late Archaic through Late Woodland, with Middle Woodland especially well represented. Justice Delayed: A Sixty Year Battle For Indian Fishing Sites, Roberta Ulrich

The Army Corps of Engineers promised in 1939 that it would provide six fishing sites totaling 400 acres for Indian fishermen to replace 40 sites that would be flooded by the pool behind Bonneville Dam on the Columbia River. The agreement with the Warm Springs, Yakima and Umatilla tribes and Columbia River Indians also included construction of living quarters, boat launches, drying sheds and sanitary facilities. Only five sites were ever acquired and drying sheds and sanitary facilities were built on only two.

Among Persian pile-weavings, the most famous are carpets produced in Safavid Iran connected with the Persian monarchy or with European royalty. These include the Habsburg hunting Carpet today in the Osterreichisches Museum for Anfewandte Kunst, Vienna, the Swedish royal carpet, and perhaps the Boston Hunting Carpet . Acquiring knowledge regarding cultural differences is essential if community psychology is to realize this value. This paper provides a culture specific perspective on the form and meaning of a knowledge system rooted in traditional Mohawk thought. The academic literature regarding research on Native people reveals an ethnocentric description of native reality. This thesis evaluates the literary achievement of Thomas King from an individual Aboriginal perspective by examining specifically his novels, Medicine River and Green Grass, Running Water, with reference to his short stories. It argues that textual readings which merely impose the Western literary tradition upon Aboriginal texts invariably limit their scope of interpretation and understanding. The study of Aboriginal literature necessitates a holistic approach that involves historical, political, and cultural contextualizations.

Lakota Woman (1991) and Ohitika Woman (1994) are the consecutive life stories of Mary Brave Woman Olguin (also known as Mary Crow Dog and Mary Brave Bird). The books portray Mary's telling of her life and its connection with Lakota history and tradition. Non-Native artist and writer, Richard Erdoes, was involved in the co-authorship of both books and recent criticism often focuses upon Erdoes' involvement in the writing process.
