Latent Didactic Functions Of Tlingit Mythology: A Re-Evaluation Of Raven's Role In Northwest Coast Culture, Stephen Poyser

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

A comparative study was conducted of several variants of the Raven cycle of myths as manifested among the Tlingit Indians of the Northwest Coast. The results of this folkloristic study indicate that the myths serve several didactic functions. In addition to the manifest function of explaining the origin of the present order of the world the myths also serve to provide members of the society with a classificatory system through which they are able to relate to observable phenomena within their environment. The myths also provide institutionalized behavioral alternatives available to the society as manifested by the actions of Raven, …

This is a transcript of the 1978 commencement address at Oral Roberts University held on April 30th, 1978. The address was given by civil rights leader, Reverend Jesse Jackson who also received an honorary doctorate from ORU. Jackson talked about ORU's reputation for racial integration and equality and challenged the students and university to continue to live out the dream of equality in education.

The Relative Efficiencey Of The Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale (Wais) As A Predictor Of College Academic Achievement, Ollie Dennis

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

This study examined the predictive validity of the WAIS in an academic setting. Traditional WAIS IQ scores and subtests of 127 male and 163 female college students were correlated with Grade Point Averages at the end of four semesters and within five academic areas. Five groups were examined including the total group, male group, female group, black group, and white group. The academic University's general and Communication of areas investigated corresponded to the education requirements; Organization Ideas, Humanities, Social and Behavioral Studies, Natural Science and Mathematics, and Physical Development. This three-page typed letter was written by attorney Kenneth E. Tilsen on January 26, 1978 regarding the nomination of Judge William Webster as Director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation. The letter provides a history of Judge Webster's past rulings involving civil rights cases of Indian people in the Dakotas, including Wounded Knee Legal Defense Committee v. FBI, Russell Means v. Dick Wilson and United States v. Dodge. Tilsen warns that Webster is unwilling to curb FBI abuses and fails to recognize First Amendment freedoms.
