The Garifuna Journey Study Guide, Andrea E. Leland, Kathy Berger Jan 1991

The Garifuna Journey Study Guide, Andrea E. Leland, Kathy Berger

Documentary Study Guides

Garifuna tradition bearers, artists, and technicians collaborated with filmmakers Andrea E. Leland and Kathy Berger to produce The Garifuna Journey, a documentary focused on the story of resistance and continuity of culture. The National Garifuna Council of Belize also worked on the project with the goal of cultural retrieval, as little had been documented and collected for its own archives.

With direction from tradition bearers in Belize, video footage and audio taped oral histories were collected, transcribed, and returned to the Belize community. The documentary was produced from these materials, focused on the Garifuna experience in Belize.

African Americans And The Bible: Outline Of An Interpretive History, Vincent L. Wimbush

CGU Faculty Publications and Research

Since every reading of important texts, especially mythic or religious texts, reflects a "reading" or assessment of one's world, and since the Bible has from the founding of the nation served as an icon, a history of African Americans' historical readings of the Bible is likely to reflect their historical self-understandings—as Africans in America.

"...Something Shining, Like Gold--But Better." The National Indian Youth Leadership Model: A Manual For Program Leaders, Mcclellan Hall

Tribal Nations Documents

A lot of people are talking about education these days, including President Bush, who recently launched his America 2000 plan here in St. Paul. It hasn't been like this for many years, certainly not during the 1980s when the issue of young people dropping out, pushed out, or bored out was almost invisible on the national agenda. For McClellan Hall, however, concern for how children learn-especially Indian children, has been a lifelong mission. As national interest focuses on education, it is essential that credible voices such as McClellan's, voices which neither claim nor seek a national limelight, be heard amid the current …

Economic Prescriptions For Black Americans, Jeremiah P. Cotton Jan 1991

Economic Prescriptions For Black Americans, Jeremiah P. Cotton

Trotter Review

The following is a policy statement issued October 12, 1989, by the "Study Group on Employment, Income, and Occupations" of the Assessment of the Status of African-Americans project conducted by the William Monroe Trotter Institute. The full report of the study group is published in an article entitled "Race and Inequality in the Managerial Age," which appears in Social, Political, and Economic Issues in Black America.

One of the major conclusions of this report on the relative economic status of blacks in the United States is that a substantial and persisting gap exists between the general circumstances of blacks …

Blacks In Golf, Wornie L. Reed Jan 1991

Blacks In Golf, Wornie L. Reed

Trotter Review

From 1961 until the mid-1980s a weekend ritual was repeated by many African Americans who follow golf. For these individuals, each weekend morning included a peek at the standings of the weekly Professional Golf Association (PGA) tournament printed in the newspaper to see how the black golfers were doing and whether any one of them was the tournament leader or was close enough to the lead to win the tournament. As the 1980s came to an end anyone still practicing the old ritual was doing so in vain. No blacks were winning tournaments on the regular PGA Tour, nor were …

African Americans And The Future Of The U.S. Economy, Lou Ferleger, Jay R. Mandle Jan 1991

African Americans And The Future Of The U.S. Economy, Lou Ferleger, Jay R. Mandle

Trotter Review

For the first time in the country's history, the level of skills and education of the African-American labor force is a critical determinant of the potential for growth of the economy itself. The integration of black labor into the economy now means that the development of one is dependent upon the development of the other. To investigate this relationship we first examine the recent performance of the economy and the consequences of that performance for the black standard of living, and then the role the African-American labor force can play in overcoming the economic deficiencies that have plagued the economy.

Beyond The Pyramids: Geometry And Design In The Carpets Of Egypt, 1450-1750, Carol Bier Jan 1991

Beyond The Pyramids: Geometry And Design In The Carpets Of Egypt, 1450-1750, Carol Bier

Textile Research Works

Mamluk carpets present a paradox. For although they are among the most tantalizingly beautiful of all Oriental carpets, they are also the least understood. The answers to such questions as who made them, why they were made and for whom, and how they were used, are virtually unknown. These carpets, produced during the rule of the Mamluk sultans in Egypt in the late 15th century are arguably the finest ever produced anywhere. Mamluk carpets are distinguished from all other carpet-weaving traditions. In part, this distinction derives from the dominance and simplicity of geometric form (#R34.32.1): squares and rectangles, octagons and …

Review Of Ojibway Music From Minnesota: Continuity And Change, Kenton Bales Jan 1991

Review Of Ojibway Music From Minnesota: Continuity And Change, Kenton Bales

Music Faculty Publications

According to an old Native American axiom cited by Jamake Highwater, "An ear of corn is a very complicated organism. But for the corn plant, it is simple." Likewise, much Native American music seems mysterious and exotic, since it comes from a culture vastly dissimilar to that of Anglo- and Afro-Americans. This book and the accompanying tape do a great deal to clarify the role of music among the organism we call the Ojibways.

Review Of The Yankton Sioux, Michael L. Tate Jan 1991

Review Of The Yankton Sioux, Michael L. Tate

History Faculty Publications

Although numerous nonfiction works about American Indians fill juvenile sections of public libraries, most are written by educators who know little about the subtleties of Indian life. The result is a myriad of books that reflect a "Great Chiefs" approach, or worse yet, a type of composite Native American hero distill tribes for the young adult and general reading audience, Frank W. Porter III, Director of Chelsea House Foundation for the Study of American Indians, has initiated a 53-volume series of tribally and topically organized books. The length of each volume is rigidly maintained at 111 pages, and the list …

A Case Study Of Black West Indian Migrants In Urban Canada: The Decision To Migrate, Patrick Richardson Jan 1991

A Case Study Of Black West Indian Migrants In Urban Canada: The Decision To Migrate, Patrick Richardson

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

The main purpose of this study is to examine the extent to which traditional models of the migration decision making process adequately account for and describe the decision making process of black West Indian immigrants in Canada. Traditional models of the migration decision making process have suggested that individuals migrate after a rational comparison of place utilities (Wolpert, 1964; Roseman, 1971). These human capital models of migration (De Jong et al, 1981) suggest that individuals, acting in a very rational manner, seek always to maximize their “profits” at an optimum location. However, this study suggests that in the case of …

Post-Colonial Feminism And The Veil: Considering The Differences, Lama Abu-Odeh Jan 1991

Post-Colonial Feminism And The Veil: Considering The Differences, Lama Abu-Odeh

Georgetown Law Faculty Publications and Other Works

Since the Iranian Revolution of 1979, the issue of the veil has been the topic of heated debate in Muslim countries; particularly in those countries that witnessed strong fundamentalist movements. Until then, adopting the veil had been the individual choice of Muslim women. The fact that the Islamicists who took power in Iran sanctioned the veil, and penalized those women who chose not to wear it, was a seductive, or alternatively a terrifying, reminder to women in other Muslim countries of what it might be like as a woman under Islamic rule. In countries such as Jordan, Algeria, and Egypt, …
