Not since the 1990 census has there been a broad profile of this rapidly growing segment of the state’s population. This information should assist the general public in understanding some of the basic issues affecting the Hispanic community. It should also be useful to the many individuals and organizations who are concerned about the future of this community and responsible for informed decision-making: elected officials, policy makers, …

Election Monitoring In Oromia: What Are The Conditions For Democracy?, Frederick C. Gamst Sep 1998

Election Monitoring In Oromia: What Are The Conditions For Democracy?, Frederick C. Gamst

New England Journal of Public Policy

Professor Gamst, a member of the Joint International Observer group (JIOG), reports the problems he monitored during the 1992 electoral campaign and voting activities in the strife-ridden region of Oromia in Ethiopia. His analyses illuminate the background institutional barriers and the politically competitive reasons for the failure of the elections. Gamst discusses the nature of the multitudinous Oromo people and the consequences of any election victory by them for the destiny of Ethiopia. He also describes the sometimes violent aftermaths of the failed election of 1992 and its follow-up election of 1994, in which the Oromo were again denied reasonable …

Dressing, Undressing, And Early European Contact In Australia And Tahiti, Michael Sturma Sep 1998

Dressing, Undressing, And Early European Contact In Australia And Tahiti, Michael Sturma

Pacific Studies

Dress and presentation of the body serve as important points of reference in cross-cultural transactions but are potentially confusing. Focusing on early encounters between Europeans and the indigenous peoples of Australia and Tahiti, I argue that certain tactics were commonly adopted to facilitate communication across cultures and dress codes. I have categorized these patterns of discourse as exposure, make-overs, and appropriation. While these tactics could assist in developing cross-cultural relationships, they also created their own ambiguities.

Revolutionary Trickster Communities: Re-Presenting Folk Heroes In Contemporary African American Novels, Susan C. Stinson

Theses & Honors Papers

In this thesis, the three novelists, as tricksters, manipulate one’s reading process by overlapping the visible with the invisible world. This thesis explores the tricksters communities and will focus on the novelists as trickster. Sherley Anne Williams, Ernest Gaines, and Gloria Naylor parody the rebel or loner trickster tradition in literature and conceptualize a world in which African Americans, white Americans, and Native Americans work communally to deconstruct the stereotypes associated with race, age, and gender. The authors use parody as a humorous narrative technique. The humor enables the modern reader to look into the past at the wrongs imposed …
