The International Partnership for Service-Learning along with South Dakota State University engages North and South Dakota Native American Communities with service learning. College students from the United States as well as foreign countries participate in 2-13 week sessions in service learning. Students have a two week orientation session on Native American Culture. Students meet with SDSU Faculty as well as Native American Cultural Presenters. Orientation concludes with a one week academic field trip visiting historical sites and SD Reservations. Students then spend up to 10 weeks living and serving in Native American communities. Students may earn up to 15 credits …

Faced with a dramatic shift in population demographics and a 1000% increase in the number of English Language Learner elementary school children, four colleges and universities and seven public school districts have joined forces to increase the number minority, bilingual, and ESL endorsed teachers in northeast Nebraska. This panel- workshop session will discuss the project from multiple perspectives. Public school representatives reveal their challenges in serving a largely non-English speaking student body and their difficulties recruiting minority teachers to rural Nebraska. Crossing boundaries that lead to difficult dialogue touches upon the core of my academic existence. I teach about Africa and the world of Africans on a small predominately white campus outside of a major metro area. The topics that are introduced in my classes cross over many academic areas. With Africa as the starting point of all discussions, students gradually develop an "Afrocentric" perspective per the discussions of Asante. Not because it is the focus of the class, but because Africa is the origin of civilization according to Diop and others.

Ethnic Studies

Over the 30 years of their existence, studies of Latinos/as in the U.S. and the field of Latin American Studies have emerged largely as divided disciplines. That is, despite what would appear to be similar sensibilities including comparable criticisms of Western hegemony and the neocolonial practices of the U.S., as well as the political, economic, and cultural displacement of similar populations, the two areas of study have more often regarded each other as competitive colleagues rather than complimentary practices. Do Asian Men Face Wage Discrimination In The United States?, Marlene Kim

Institute for Asian American Studies Publications

Currently there is a debate regarding whether Asian men suffer from workplace discrimination on account of their race. The research findings have been mixed. Cabezas and Kawaguchi (1988) found that in the San Francisco Metropolitan Area, both foreign-born and U.S.-born men who were of Chinese, Japanese, Filipino, and Korean descent earned less than similarly qualified U.S.-born white men, although they did not examine the statistical significance of these findings. Using the same 1980 census data on a national sample of Chinese, Filipino, Japanese, Asian Indian, and Korean men, Duleep and Sanders (1992) find differences in earnings by race that are …
