Topic. This research investigates the relationship between eschatology and the Jerusalem temple within the second temple period. -- Purpose. This research investigates the role of the Jerusalem temple within the second temple Jewish writings to establish whether the Jerusalem temple has any role to play in relation to the end of the exile and the beginning of the eschaton. Previous analyses of second temple Judaism have not focused on the role of the Temple in eschatology. -- Sources. The primary documents investigated in this research were the proto-canonical, deutero-canonical, Qumran writings, and the Old Testament Pseudepigrapha. -- Conclusion. The Jerusalem …

Understanding The Haggadah: The Step-By-Step Seder Companion, Andrew Blitman
Andrew Blitman
A sleek and simple 15-step guide to understanding the celebration of Passover, "Understanding the Haggadah" is meant to be read as a companion to the traditional Pesach Haggadah. Esteemed Jewish sources (primarily the Kabbalah and Talmud) are used to succinctly explain the purpose of each step of the Passover Seder. A must-read for the Passover Seder.

Arguing With God: An Honest Conversation, Barry Fike
Arguing With God: An Honest Conversation, Barry Fike
Barry D. Fike
For the Jew, “I beg to differ” has been an enduring tactic of achieving and affirming identity. The Jew had addressed the same caveat to God—not in self-contradiction, but in dialectic aiming at attainment of fuller realization of who he is, as Jew and as human being. In asking about God, we examine our own selves: whether we are sensitive to the grandeur and supremacy of what we ask about, whether we are wholeheartedly concerned with what we ask about. Unless we are involved, we fail to sense the issue.

Hermann Cohen And The Jewish Jesus, Robert Erlewine
Hermann Cohen And The Jewish Jesus, Robert Erlewine
Robert Erlewine
There is a distinguished German Protestant tradition that understands Jesus, that is, his thoughts and consciousness, as essentially Greek rather than Jewish. Included in this tradition are such luminaries as Immanuel Kant, Friedrich Schleiermacher, and Adolf von Harnack. Hermann Cohen is not the first Jewish thinker to oppose this notion and insist upon Jesus’s Jewishness.1 However, his account of the Jewish Jesus, particularly as it is developed in his two major treatises on philosophy of religion, Der Begriff der Religion im System der Philosophie [The Concept of Religion in the System of Philosophy] and Religion of Reason Out of the …

“Atlantic Jewish History: A Conceptual Reorientation”, Aviva Ben-Ur
Aviva Ben-Ur
This chapter explores the radical implications of an Atlantic perspective on American Jewish history, based on an analysis of select primary sources from The Arnold and Deanne Kaplan Collection of Early American Judaica, housed at the University of Pennsylvania Libraries. Such an Atlantic perspective allows us to revise the national interpretation of “American” Jewish history, commonly taken to mean the United States, reminding us of its plural hemispheric meaning (Americas) and allowing us to envision an Atlantic Jewish world connecting four continents: Europe, Africa, South and North America. Adopting a chronological-thematic approach, this chapter identifies three key areas for analysis: …

American Politics And The Jewish Community, Dan Schnur
American Politics And The Jewish Community, Dan Schnur
The Jewish Role in American Life: An Annual Review
At its broadest level, politics is the practice of making a community a better, safer, and more tolerant place to live. So it should be of no surprise that America's Jews have devoted themselves to civic engagement and the democratic process. From before the Revolutionary War to the early 21st century, when America saw the first Jewish vice presidential nominee of a major party and the first Jewish Speaker of the House of Representatives, the Jewish community has always devoted itself to public service, issue advocacy, and involvement in politics and government at every level. While strong support for the …

The Pink And Yellow Star, Naomi Cahn
The Pink And Yellow Star, Naomi Cahn
Writing Programs
Cahn utilized a history major and Jewish studies minor to write her fictional piece for Dr. Michael Datcher’s Creative Writing class of fall 2013. “The Pink and Yellow Star” tells the story of a young woman’s struggle to survive as a homosexual during the Holocaust. There were many difficulties writing this heavy-handed of a story, both factually and emotionally. Cahn wanted to make good the motto that Jews had promised, “Never again.” However, she believed that Jews and most of the world had not abided by this ideal. There’s still genocide in the world; there’s still discrimination, oppression, and persecution. …
