This dissertation analyzes approximately fifty American films that feature predominantly heterosexual interfaith/intercultural romantic, sexual or marital relations between Jewish and Gentile protagonists. It asks what political or social ideals can be illustrated by these portrayals, and how these films can be taken cumulatively to explore trends in modern life. The author places liberalism at the heart of the mainstream Hollywood discourse on intermarriage, and shows how films that run counter to the expectations of liberal romances may reflect communitarian critiques of liberal tenets.

The topic of same-sex marriage continues to be a source of controversy, yet the publicly recognized commitments between lesbian and gay partners is an emerging reality in the twenty-first century, especially in North America. This thesis focuses on the ritual aspects of same sex marriage by exploring the ways in which weddings are adapted to accommodate the needs of a lesbian or gay couple, particularly within Judaism, a tradition in which the components of a wedding ceremony are historically and culturally significnat. Beginning with James Parkes and Jules Isaac, and continuing even until this day, extensive effort has been focused on the issue of Christian-Jewish relations. The Holocaust is a topic central to those reflections. This is due to the general acceptance of the thesis that, in some fashion, Christianity can be described as having contributed to the Holocaust. To appreciate that thesis one need only consider Hitler's own remarks, made at the 1933 Concordat Conference, "I am only continuing the work of the Catholic Church: to isolate the Jews and fight their influence." The thesis examines the role and power of ideology in the formation of the Hebrew people. Ideology has been selected as a salient theme since it promises to answer various questions which yet linger concerning this early period in Israel's history. Without an appreciation of the role played by ideology, the formative phase of the Hebrew people seems to be enigmatic and largely a series of coincidental events. Although this dissertation cannot offer conclusive arguments to support the historical reconstruction proposed herein, it does put forward plausible explanations for the manner in which Hebrew nationhood began. In this thesis I discuss E.M. Broner’s novel A Weave of Women and show how she uses innovative rituals of status elevation and status reversal to focus her reader’s attention on the problems associated with the patriarchal structures of traditional Judaism, e.g., racism and religious chauvinism. In Part One I provide a description of contemporary feminist rituals to set Broner’s novel into context. Part Two is an exposition of the text of her novel comparing its feminist rites to various Jewish prayer books and descriptions of traditional Jewish rituals. The present study attempted to investigate the relationships between self esteem, perception of Gentiles’ attitudes, and attitudes to the State of Israel, as expressed by a sample of Canadian born Jews.

Four hypotheses were formulated. The first one stated that there existed a negative relationship between perception of Gentiles’s attitudes (GA) and positive attitudes toward Israel (AI). That hypothesis was supported.

The second hypothesis stated that there existed a negative relationship between self esteem (SE) and positive attitudes toward Israel (AI). That hypothesis was also supported.

Rabbinic ideas concerning the Temple of Jerusalem captured the interest of the present writer as he was researching the biblical concept of sacrifice. It was fascinating to discover that the rich symbolism of the Temple in rabbinic thought developed in a period when the Temple did not exist. The presence of teh mythical Temple in the literature of the Rabbis began to raise certain questions: Why did the Jewish leaders of the post-Temple era develop such an elaborate mythology of the Temple?
