Realizing Death: The Journey Of American Cinema, Elizabeth C. Urban
Realizing Death: The Journey Of American Cinema, Elizabeth C. Urban
Excellence in Research Awards
Since their inception, movies have served as the meter of popular culture, reflecting the customs, tastes and thinking of their times. As such, films provide benchmarks for the history of psychological development. A survey of American movies reveals that even though there has been a progression of psychological thought about death and dying by the medical community and a more naturalistic portrayal in our cinema, we remain a death-denying culture.

Is Disney Surfing The Third Wave? A Study Of The Pervasiveness Of The Third Wave Of Feminism In Disney's Female Protagonists, Emily S. Ellington
Is Disney Surfing The Third Wave? A Study Of The Pervasiveness Of The Third Wave Of Feminism In Disney's Female Protagonists, Emily S. Ellington
Senior Honors Theses
It is important to understand factors that have influenced Generation Y’s view of womanhood. One way to do this is to analyze third wave feminist messages portrayed by Disney, the media powerhouse. In order to determine if Disney reflects feminist values, the third wave themes portrayed in The Little Mermaid (1989), Beauty and the Beast (1991), Pocahontas (1995), and Mulan (1999) are examined. It is concluded that Disney portrays the feminist values of independence and multiculturalism; however, the films are set within patriarchal societies and portray women to be domestic. Ultimately, Disney portrays four messages about womanhood: Women are equal …

Mind Vs. Media: A Civil War Between Typography And The Mediated Image, Elizabeth J. Neffinger
Mind Vs. Media: A Civil War Between Typography And The Mediated Image, Elizabeth J. Neffinger
Senior Honors Theses
The past thirty years have marked the start of a new kind of civil war in our digitally powered American society. There is a deep chasm between the cry for the lost art of typography and the mediated power of the Image. We are a culture battling a war in our own heads, attempting to assimilate Images without replacing the need for a written text.
This thesis will argue that the mediated Image is not a death sentence to critical thinking; rather it is an undeniable, inescapable power that can be used to positively influence our culture. It will research …

The Roberta Jones Junior Theatre: A Model Children's Theatre, Chareen Hardy Lauritzen
Theses and Dissertations
Since its beginning in 1968, the Roberta Jones Junior Theatre, a children's theatre, connected to the Parks and Recreation Department of Santa Clara, California, has been creating child-centered performances for young audiences. This thesis will explore the history of the Santa Clara/Roberta Jones Junior Theatre and discuss the components that have contributed to its forty-year success. For a children's theatre to be successful it needs to be first centered on the learning of the children, in tune with the need of its community, and have a staff focused on the same goals. By examining the Roberta Jones Junior Theatre, the …

Behavioral Application In Wildlife Photography: Developing A Foundation In Ecological And Behavioral Characteristics Of The Zanzibar Red Colobus Monkey (Procolobus Kirkii) As It Applies To The Development Exhibition Photography, Matthew Jorgensen
Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection
A fundamental understanding of Zanzibar red colobus monkey (Piliocolobus kirkii) behavior can be used to increase the efficiency of a photographic expedition and to increase the impact and value of a subsequent exhibition of the photographs taken. Preliminary research on cercopithecine monkeys, as well as the individual species, was paired with animal behavior experience in the development and execution of a photographic expedition to Jozani Forest. Collected photographs were compiled, organized, analyzed and edited before final selection of twenty five pieces meant for exhibition. These shots were assessed for their aesthetic, documentary and educational quality both individually and collectively as …

A Case Study Of The Response Of Newsroom Managers To The Psychological Affects On Newsroom Employees Of The Coverage Of A Traumatic News Story, Adrienne S. Garvey
A Case Study Of The Response Of Newsroom Managers To The Psychological Affects On Newsroom Employees Of The Coverage Of A Traumatic News Story, Adrienne S. Garvey
Selected Faculty Publications
Journalists are exposed to traumatic situations every day. Some studies have been done on the lasting effects of the trauma caused by large scale events, such as 9/11 or Hurricane Katrina, but few studies have been conducted on the effects of everyday trauma, such as murder or any other violent crime. Therefore, little is done from a newsroom management standpoint to help address any psychological needs journalists may have following the coverage of a traumatic event. This study examines the Amish school shooting in Nickel Mines, Pennsylvania, on October 2, 2006 and the effect it had on employees in the …

Child Of The Long Take: Alfonso Cuaron's Film Aesthetics In The Shadow Of Globalization, James N. Udden
Child Of The Long Take: Alfonso Cuaron's Film Aesthetics In The Shadow Of Globalization, James N. Udden
Interdisciplinary Studies Faculty Publications
Alfonso Cuaron's 2006 film, Children of Men, not only suggests that the economic pressures on contemporary Hollywood directors differ little from those in the studio era, it also suggests that film style in the age of globalization is not as homogenized as many fear. The long take is the most prominent feature in Children of Men, including many which are digitally contrived. Lofty reasons by the filmmakers are given for these long lakes, but there are more pedestrian reasons behind this. Other examples past and present suggest that often the tong take serves the needs of both filmmakers and …

Feminisms In Stanley Kubrick's Eyes Wide Shut, Emily G. Brown
Feminisms In Stanley Kubrick's Eyes Wide Shut, Emily G. Brown
Institute for the Humanities Theses
With Eyes Wide Shut, Stanley Kubrick examines the causes and conditions in which men are more powerful and men's production, ideas and activities are seen as having greater value and higher status than women's. Eyes Wide Shut's (EWS) renders the tension between Bill (Tom Cruise) and Alice Hartford (Nicole Kidman) in the modem struggle to find balance between the institution of marriage and their autonomous selves visible. As Bill's travels dominate the film, little beyond the first scene of Alice's disrobed body and the last scene highlighting her psychological stability are shown. We follow Bill as he meets several women; …
