Itsembabwoko ‘À La Française’? Rwanda, Fiction And The Franco-African Imaginary, Madelaine Hron Mar 2009

Itsembabwoko ‘À La Française’? Rwanda, Fiction And The Franco-African Imaginary, Madelaine Hron

English and Film Studies Faculty Publications

This article explores the literary representation of the genocide in Rwanda, and by extension, that of the Franco-African imaginary. Since the horrific events in 1994, “Rwanda” has become a discursive epiphenomenon, be it in global human rights, African or francophone contexts. Literary works about itsembabwoko, mostly published in France, now represent both a varied and a substantial corpus in Francophone literature. Problematically, however, France played a critical, if not insidious, role in the 1994 Tutsi genocide. This paper therefore examines to what extent Francophone literature about Rwanda is shaped by French politics. Specifically, it contrasts Franco-African texts produced as part …

Troubled Waters: Mid-Twentieth Century American Society On "Trial" In The Films Of John Waters, Taunya Lovell Banks Jan 2009

Troubled Waters: Mid-Twentieth Century American Society On "Trial" In The Films Of John Waters, Taunya Lovell Banks

Faculty Scholarship

In this Article Professor Banks argues that what makes many of filmmaker John Waters early films so subversive is his use of the “white-trash” body—people marginalized by and excluded from conventional white America—as countercultural heroes. He uses the white trash body as a surrogate for talk about race and sexuality in the early 1960s. I argue that in many ways Waters’ critiques of mid-twentieth century American society reflect the societal changes that occurred in the last forty years of that century. These societal changes resulted from the civil rights, gay pride, student, anti-war and women’s movements, all of which used …

When Was Dracula First Translated Into Romanian?, Duncan Light Jan 2009

When Was Dracula First Translated Into Romanian?, Duncan Light

Journal of Dracula Studies

Dracula is one of the world’s best-known books. The novel has never been out of print since its publication and has been translated into about 30 languages (Melton). Yet, paradoxically, one of the countries where it is least known is Romania. The usual explanation given for this situation is Romania’s recent history, particularly the period of Communist Party rule (1947-1989). Dracula, with its emphasis on vampires and the supernatural, was apparently regarded as an unsuitable or inappropriate novel in a state founded on the materialist and “scientific” principles of Marxism. Hence, no translation of Stoker’s novel was permitted during the …

We're All Waiting For Something, Christina N. Bigler Jan 2009

We're All Waiting For Something, Christina N. Bigler

Senior Honors Theses and Projects

One reason I knew I wanted to join the Eastern Michigan University Honors College (EMU HC) was because I would be allowed to make a film for my Honors Senior Thesis Project. Of course, joining the Honors College would help me to widen my academic boundaries and surround me with other students who were as passionate about succeeding both in the classroom and out as I was. However, in the end, I knew that with all of the hard work I would put in throughout my entire college career, whether it was in honors or non-honors classes, in film courses …

Marketing Under Feminist Scrutiny, Andrew Harris Jan 2009

Marketing Under Feminist Scrutiny, Andrew Harris

XULAneXUS

At first glance, an ad in a magazine may appear harmless when left critically unexamined, but when studied closely, patterns start to arise that express male dominance which habitually goes unnoticed because male dominance has long been taken for granted. Laura Mulvey writes on phallocentrism in her essay entitled “Visual Pleasure and Narrative Cinema” and explains how to recognize the distinction between men and women in popular media. The most dominant theme in her essay is that marketers depict female characters so they seem like man’s opposite, suggesting that women only exist when defined by their “castration” or penislessness. This …

Casino Royale And Franchise Remix: James Bond As Superhero, Robert P. Arnett Jan 2009

Casino Royale And Franchise Remix: James Bond As Superhero, Robert P. Arnett

Communication & Theatre Arts Faculty Publications

The article discusses the role of the film "Casino Royale" in remixing the James Bond franchise. The author believes that the remixed Bond franchise has shifted its genre to a superhero franchise. When Sony acquired MGM in 2004, part of its plan was to transform the 007 franchise at par with "Spiderman." The remixed franchise re-aligns its franchise criteria with those established by superhero films. The author cites "Casino Royale's" narrative structure as an example of the success of the film as franchise remixed for the future. The portrayal of Bond as a superhero by actor Daniel Craig is discussed.

Media Literacy, Brian O'Neill, Ingun Hagen Jan 2009

Media Literacy, Brian O'Neill, Ingun Hagen

Books/Book chapters

Across Europe and beyond, the promotion of media literacy, for children and adults, has acquired an important public urgency. Traditional literacy is seen to be no longer sufficient for participation in today’s society. Citizens need to be media literate, it is claimed, to enable them to cope more effectively with the flood of information in today’s highly mediated societies. As teachers, politicians and policy makers everywhere struggle with this rapid shift in media culture, greater responsibility is placed on citizens for their own welfare in the new media environment. Media literacy is therefore all the more essential in enabling citizens …

¿De Qué Cine Hablamos? Las Tareas De Los Estudios Del Cine Latinoamericano, Claudia Ferman Jan 2009

¿De Qué Cine Hablamos? Las Tareas De Los Estudios Del Cine Latinoamericano, Claudia Ferman

Latin American, Latino and Iberian Studies Faculty Publications

Etre Et Parler: Being And Speaking French In Abdellatif Kechiches Lesquive And Laurent Cantets Entre Les Murs, Dana Strand

French and Francophone Studies Faculty Work

French film-makers have long recognized the primordial importance to the nation’s ‘imagined community’ of the centralized public school system, which, since the early days of the Third Republic, has been viewed as a bulwark of Republican values. In this essay, I discuss the ways in which two recent films, Abdellatif Kechiche’s L’Esquive/The Dodge (2004) and Laurent Cantet’s Entre les murs/The Class (2008), interrogate the role French schools play in shaping national identity. Both films focus on language as a marker of difference as well as a point of tension, performance and potential subversion, by exploring the respective contrast between the …

No Man An Island: The Cinema Of Hou Hsiao-Hsien, James N. Udden

Gettysburg College Faculty Books

Hou Hsiao-hsien is arguably the most celebrated Chinese-language film director in the international film festival realm. However, this is not due to an inert cultural tradition so much as to numerous historical/contextual factors – most of all his being from Taiwan -- which together explain the accomplishments of Hou.
