The Screenplays Of Robert Towne 1960-2000, Elaine Lennon Jan 2009

The Screenplays Of Robert Towne 1960-2000, Elaine Lennon

Doctoral

What follows is a study of Hollywood screenwriter Robert Towne. Theoretical notions of the screenplay have largely been cast in terms of screenwriting practice as an adjunct of studio production schedules. A popular cultural text in its own right, the screenplay is a procedurally central yet provisional document originated by a writer and subject to alteration within the production process. Auteurism has dominated film theory for over fifty years and is the point of departure for this study. While the critical method employed here is not rigidly anti-director, it seeks to enact an intervention into prior debates surrounding the attribution …

The Orphan As Mirror: Postmodern Alienation And Societal Crisis In Japanese Film, Leann Wolley Jan 2009

The Orphan As Mirror: Postmodern Alienation And Societal Crisis In Japanese Film, Leann Wolley

Global Tides

This paper discusses the cultural significance of orphans in the post-modern media, using as a case study two Japanese films: Grave of the Fireflies and Nobody Knows. Through comparing the films and examining their approach to the orphan storytelling this paper attempts to gain insight into post-modern Japanese attitudes about social issues. By analyzing the appeal of the films to Japanese and international audiences, it also attempts to explain their popularity by drawing parallels between the main characters of each motion picture and the average postmodern citizen.

From Dreams To Nightmares : Cross-Generational Romance In Mainstream American Cinema, Sol Stern Jan 2009

From Dreams To Nightmares : Cross-Generational Romance In Mainstream American Cinema, Sol Stern

Theses : Honours

This thesis is concerned with the changes in cinematic depictions of romantic relationships in which there is enough age disparity that the couple could be mistaken for parent and child. These cross-generational affairs have significance within the ideology of the family unit, the heterosexual couple and the classic Hollywood ideal of romantic love. The way that these relationships have been portrayed on screen has changed drastically in mainstream American cinema from the 1950s to the 2000s, and these shifts reflect changing values and attitudes in society since all films exhibit certain ideologies. Through sampling several relevant films made between 1953 …

Health Communication Theories: Implications For Hiv Reporting In Asia And The Pacific, Trevor Cullen Jan 2009

Health Communication Theories: Implications For Hiv Reporting In Asia And The Pacific, Trevor Cullen

Research outputs pre 2011

This paper focuses on the expanding HIV (Human Immunodeficiency Virus) epidemic in parts of Asia and the Pacific region and recommends the adoption of insights from particular health communication theories. The author argues that these paradigms can assist in broadening the current scope and content of HIV reporting. One theory in particular - Social Change Communication (SCC) - challenges the media to extend the framing of HIV from primarily a health story to one that is linked to more macro socio-economic, cultural and political factors. Asian and Pacific countries that have an emerging or expanding HIV epidemic need to realise …

Brothers Are Better Than Sisters: A Semiotic, Feminist Analysis Of Hbo's "Rome", Patricia Mamie Peers Jan 2009

Brothers Are Better Than Sisters: A Semiotic, Feminist Analysis Of Hbo's "Rome", Patricia Mamie Peers

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

In 2005, the Home Box Office and British Broadcasting Corporation partnered to produce Rome , a television series that retells the Roman histories of Julius Caesar, Marc Antony and Augustus through the lives of two centurion soldiers, Titus Pullo and Lucious Vorenus. The show's producers endeavored to bring Roman streets to life and included more storylines of women, men and children of all classes. At first considered a more egalitarian approach to history, Rome 's women are said to "challenge expectations" (Vu, 2005) and "forge a new path" (Ragalie, 2007, p. 2). But does this new representation challenge the old …

Freezing The Music And Fetishising The Subject: The Audiovisual Dramaturgy Of Michel Van Der Aa, Jonathan W. Marshall

Sound Scripts

When, with our eyes shut we run our hands along a surface, the rubbing of our fingers against the surface, and especially the varied play of our joints, provide a series of sensations, which differ only by their qualities and which exhibit a certain order in time. In this paper, I will explore the sonic relationship of sound to the development of new imaging technologies through Atomic Force Microscopes (AFM). In 2003, UCLA scientist, James Gimzewski, positioned a sensitive instrument called an atomic force microscope over a cell to try to detect its motion and the microscope picked up regular …

Flatness, Ornamentality And The Sonic Image: Puncturing Flânerie And Postcolonial Memorialisation In The Work Of David Chesworth And Sonia Leber, Jonathan W. Marshall

Sound Scripts

Much of the power of the cinema experience lies with the sound track, and the way it interacts with what happens on the screen. Soundtrack composition has become a complex art, where musical ideas are enhanced by sound reproduction technologies and complicated by sound effects demanded by the action. The effects of certain ranges of low frequency sound which are featured in the creation and presentation of both film music composition and cinematic sound effects can add an unique dimension to the experience of the soundtrack, and indeed the total cinematic experience. This paper discusses very low frequency sound features …

Second Life, Video Games, And The Social Text, Steven E. Jones Jan 2009

Second Life, Video Games, And The Social Text, Steven E. Jones

English: Faculty Publications and Other Works

Instead of being a world apart from material reality, the virtual world Second Life is intertwined with larger trends associated with Web 2.0 and the "eversion" of cyberspace. A number of recent scholars have begun to explore the relation of textual studies and video games. Games represent sophisticated ideas of what it means to enable on a digital platform the dynamic, networked, collaborative construction of the social text, broadly conceived. A game space is not an infinite virtual reality, but is instead a possibility space in multiple dimensions. Videogames offer humanists serious models for potential networked events of their own—embodied, …
