A Brand New Bond: Shifting Strategies For 007 In The Age Of Conglomeration And Convergence, Katherine C. Skophammer Jul 2009

A Brand New Bond: Shifting Strategies For 007 In The Age Of Conglomeration And Convergence, Katherine C. Skophammer

Institute for the Humanities Theses

Financial success would seem to be the logical goal of the film industry. If the current narrative formula reaps financial rewards for a film franchise there should be no impetus for change. Yet, that is exactly what happened to the James Bond franchise in 2006, with the release of the prequel Casino Royale. Sony Corporation and the Bond film :franchise traversed similar paths. In 2005, Sony purchased MGM, which held the Bond library as well as the rights to future Bond film productions.

Sony's industrial needs differed greatly from MGM's. MGM continually recycled the Bond formula for 20 films …

Puppets, Pioneers, And Sport: The Onstage And Offstage Performance Of Khmer Identity, Marel Angela Stock

Theses and Dissertations

Most tourists visiting Cambodia only seek to visit the World Heritage Site of Angkor Wat. The Cambodian, or Khmer people are capitalizing on this booming tourist industry, but they are also disseminating a more complex Khmer identity through other sites and festivals. This identity simultaneously hearkens back to the affluence of the Angkor Period in Khmer history and looks forward to the modernization of the country. After the reign of the Khmer Rouge, from 1975-1979, which led to what is now called the Cambodian Killing Fields, the Khmer people needed to create a new, hopeful, peaceful identity for their nation. …

Tax Competition In The Film Industry, Chelsea Villareal Jun 2009

Tax Competition In The Film Industry, Chelsea Villareal

Anthós

Being one of the largest industries in the world, the film industry remains an economic powerhouse in our society. It’s for this reason that film’s messages are not the only political aspects of their creation. Senators and representatives across the country are increasingly seeing the film industry as key towards economic development. With incentive packages being placed around the country, the politics over the film industry have become an overwhelming power game. Politicians are being threatened with recalls and impeachment to keep their economies afloat during harsh economic times. Without raising taxes, representatives have hit a wall. Increasing debt and …

Film Score, Jeff Peters May 2009

Film Score, Jeff Peters

Renée Crown University Honors Thesis Projects - All

My capstone project involves creating an original musical score to an independent film. As the music is so invested in the narrative of the film, all work leading up to the actual composition of the music was on the history of film scoring and possible technical and creative methods, learned in classes on the subject. This knowledge and hands-on practice provided me with some limited experience, but this film was the first practical application of my composing skills.

My extensive background in music allowed me to perform all of the parts heard in the score. It was my job to …

The Lovely Invader: A Documentary On Lonicera Research, Danielle S. Houghton May 2009

The Lovely Invader: A Documentary On Lonicera Research, Danielle S. Houghton

Renée Crown University Honors Thesis Projects - All

For over a year a half, I followed Steve Maheux, a Biology major, throughout his journey to conduct a research study on honeysuckle, an invasive plant. He posed a question regarding the possibility of predicting the occurrence of an invasive plant based on certain environmental factors: soil depth, soil pH, neighboring plants and other aspects that would make up an ideal environment for this menacing plant. The focus of my documentary was to show what true research looks like in all of its tedious glory. Research isn’t fancy. It often doesn’t make for “sexy film,” but it is vital for …

Pickle Jarred, Robert Hetzron May 2009

Pickle Jarred, Robert Hetzron

Renée Crown University Honors Thesis Projects - All

The concept behind my capstone project was to creative a narrative in which a seemingly apathetic, appropriately disgruntled, teenager is propelled to social activity which will not only benefit himself personally, but his overall community. In order to do so, I set to develop a short-story narrative, entitled “The Pickle Jar,” and then adapt it into a screenplay.

In writing the short story, I set to narrate the drama and provide insight into Neil’s psyche through first-person dialogue. Neil would narrate the drama while allowing the reader to hear his inner-thoughts and opinions throughout the process. The plot would follow …

The Design, Production And Analysis Of A Realistic Stereo Cg Short Film On A Six Month Budget., Celambarasan Ramasamy

All Theses

The production of stereoscopic CG films poses some interesting challenges, especially for student productions that work under the severe limitations of time and resources. This is mainly due to the non availability of off the shelf production tools catering to stereoscopic CG productions. This work presents the production process of one such student produced stereoscopic short film. The production process is described in detail starting from the initial conception of the narrative plot to the actual production of the film. Finally an experimental technique of using eye tracking as a tool for finding out the effectiveness of the various stereoscopic …

How A Work Changes In Response To The Work Itself: Researching Civil War Photography, A Case Study, Rose Margolis May 2009

How A Work Changes In Response To The Work Itself: Researching Civil War Photography, A Case Study, Rose Margolis

Renée Crown University Honors Thesis Projects - All

This piece combines my two passions of history and television/film. I have been able to combine these two passions by doing two years of research on Civil War photography and sketch artists.

My original intention was to create a documentary about this topic, but due to unanswered questions about copyright I quickly abandoned this idea. I then moved onto writing a screenplay after slightly narrowing my topic to focus on three photographers: Mathew Brady, Alexander Gardner, and Timothy H. O’Sullivan. My intent was to focus on how they made the photographs, their relationship to each other, and why Gardner and …

Archbold Stadium The Story Of ‘78, Gordon Christopher Brookes May 2009

Archbold Stadium The Story Of ‘78, Gordon Christopher Brookes

Renée Crown University Honors Thesis Projects - All

Archbold Stadium, The Story of ’78, was inspired by an exhibit at the Syracuse University Admissions Office. The exhibit was a number of old postcards, and one of these was of Archbold Stadium. The stadium was home to Syracuse football from 1907 to 1978, and was home to such greats as Ernie Davis, Jim Brown, Floyd Little, and many others. The 1959 team that played there won Syracuse’s only national football championship, and was home to its only Heisman winner. When it was built in 1907 by John D. Archbold, it was the largest concrete stadium in the world, costing …
