Two Sculptural Fabrications That Utilize Tension, David Robert Olson

The problem chosen is one which utilizes the fabrication of parts to be constructed into a unified sculptural whole. The documentation of the fabrication of two sculptural statements is presented in this paper. A personal process of finalizing a finished piece will be presented. The works in the following pages are from similar ideas, yet different in their approach because of the two separate materials utilized--mild steel and quarter-sawed white oak. The first documented piece discussed is in steel; the second, in wood. What guides the approach to the works as sculptural ideas will first be encountered.

This thesis deals with the application of simple oxyacetylene welding techniques to the secondary art curriculum. Welded sculptural forms in sheet steel have been the focus of my own work during the past three years and these experiences formed the basis or background of the presentation of these skills to secondary students. This thesis project consists of sixteen abstract sculptures. The material most often used is polyester resin. The work explores the emotive potential of the relationship between the organic forms and geometric spaces. The forms are derived from observing the environment, other current artists' works, and the works of art history.

The sculptures generally divide into three groups. The first is composed of geometric and organic forms that are altered slightly so that aspects of each form reside in its opposite.
