International Bulletin of Political Psychology

The New York Times has reported that at least some Taliban authorities have directed that all statues in Afghanistan--including those commonly viewed as priceless exemplars of cultural (largely Buddhist) heritage and as treasures--be destroyed. The Taliban's rationale--that these statues have been used as idols and deities by non-Islamic believers and may be turned into idols in the future--is largely discussed in the context of leading to a global cultural catastrophe, as an unacceptable decision, as gratuitous vandalism, as exemplifying a rigid ignorance deserving unique contempt and disgust.

The theoretical and contextual placement of my work is informed by child development psychology. The intention is to evoke and analyze what children do, not to imitate. My use of faux fur, comforting blankets and the form of play balls all function to create objects and environments that lend themselves to absurdity, humor, and of course child-like play.

"fort, da" is titled in spirit from Sigmund Freud's observation of a child throwing a toy with an accompanying statement fort, German for "gone." The child then delights in retrieving the object while exclaiming da or "here." The anxiety …

My work was presented in the Autzen gallery. It consisted of seven individual sculptures. The materials used in the sculptures were steel and wood. The sculptures were placed in the gallery with regard to their spacing to each other and the walls, the effect of their reflections on the floor, and the utilization of the architecture (one leaned against the wall, another leaned on the cement windowsill). The gallery lighting was manipulated to create shadows that gave additional affect to the sculptures. In this installation piece, I am creating an environment, a stage if you will, to inform viewers through visual images, shadows and projections, to bear witness to an injustice through the machinations of the state. Philosophically and metaphorically, the piece is a walk through Plato's cave in search of the truth of things formerly perceived as shadows; it is also an allusion to illusions that are both transparent and opaque. In this thesis I set out to examine the important role played by William Burges in the revival of stained glass in the mid-nineteenth century. I have examined how his unique vision and obsession with the thirteenth century developed through his extensive travelling abroad, studying European architecture. My central discussion is on Burges’ first major commission at the age of thirty-five; St. Finbarre’s Cathedral, Cork. Through the use of local newspapers, correspondence and documentation, such as Vestry Minute Books, designs and cartoons stored in the Chapter House of St. Finbarre’s, I have tried to put the building of St. Finbarre’s …

I developed an interest in concrete by working in the building trades. How could such a base material be so fascinating? It had the fluidity of a lava flow, the ugliness of scat and the power of gravity. The last two years have been spent using concrete as a sculptural material. The results of my research "Flips," "Fills," and "Plops," are inquiries into the nature of concrete.

My graduate work, culminating in Spira Mirabilis, my final thesis project, has been about a search for simplicity. What I have discovered along the way is complexity. In searching for a fundamental principle that generates a complex form, I discovered an apparently simple form that is, rather, a consequence of complex relationships. By creating a work that is grounded on a fundamental, universal principle, I hoped to evoke a subliminal or other-than-conscious response that would effect a transformation in the viewer. My work was presented in the form of an installation. Using three and two-dimensional objects, as well as sound and light, I created a site specific type of installation. Materials involved in this project were hydrostone, plaster, steel and copper. The sound I recorded on my steel sculptures in an acoustic space and then mixed to create sound compositions to amplify the feeling for the space. This installation reflects my pursuits in painting and sculpture, as well as my interest in music and light effects. The mediums used not only allowed form but dictated abstract, 3-dimensional compositions referred to as: construction.
