This study explored barriers that Korean collegiate student athletes confront with regard to pursuing careers outside of professional athletics. More specifically, the purpose of the study was to identify the barriers to Korean student athletes’ career development, as well as to examine the relationships among the psychological constructs of athlete identity and career decision making self-efficacy. A total of 321 Korean student athletes participated in the study, including 263 men (81.9%) and 59 women (18.1%). For the institutions and organizations charged with safeguarding the nation’s cultural and historic resources – museums, historical societies, libraries, and municipal offices, to name just a few – building relationships with local first responders and emergency managers before disaster strikes is key to ensuring the safety of staff and collections. Why would organizations attack or kill people at cultural heritage sites or destroy such sites? Using data from the Big Allied and Dangerous insurgent dataset that has data on 140 insurgent organizations from 1998-2012, and data from the Global Terrorism Database, this presentation examines the factors that make insurgent groups more likely to attack such sites or kill people at such sites. We look at the impact of organizational ideology, organizational structure and power as well as country level factors.

Hurricane Katrina devastated the Gulf Coast in August 2005 and created the single largest disaster for cultural resources that the United States has witnessed since the inception of the National Historic Preservation Act (NHPA) in 1966. Notably, the NHPA created the National Register of Historic Places, our nation’s catalog of important cultural resources. The NHPA also stipulates that any federal undertaking which may adversely affect National Register eligible resources be mitigated. For the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), Katrina created the largest compliance project ever under Section 106 of the NHPA.

It will provide an assessment of how the climate has changed over the past Century based on a purely observational perspective. The scientific basis for anthroprogenic climate change will be explained and discussed including a description of the “greenhouse effect” and why it is important for life on this planet. Technical analysis and conservation treatment was carried out on a late 19th century oil on panel painting, potentially a portrait of Yvette Guilbert by Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec. Materials analysis was done to identify pigments, binding media, varnish, and wood. X-ray fluorescence, optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy-energy dispersive spectroscopy, Raman spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and pyrolysis-gas chromatography-mass spectrometry were employed. Extensive photographic documentation was executed to track changes before, during, and after treatment, and to enhance examination. No modern pigments introduced after the turn of the 20th century were discovered. Hypotheses are made about the artist’s methods. Information obtained through …

In order to determine the materials used, method of manufacture, origin, and method of treatment; conservation issues were assessed, and sampling was conducted in appropriate areas of the lacquer for analysis. Examination and analyses were carried out using photographic techniques, x- radiography, optical microscopy, X-Ray Fluorescence spectroscopy (XRF), Scanning Electron Microscopy and Energy Dispersive X-ray Spectroscopy (SEM-EDS), Fourier Transform Infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). Pyrolysis–Gas Chromatography–Mass Spectrometry (Py-GC-MS). The results were then used to consider materials, fabrication method, and possibilities of origin; and to formulate a plan for treatment using appropriate materials and methods.

Seeing Double: Comparative Study Of Two Photograph Albums Containing Cyanotypes And Gelatin Silver Prints Of Stereoscopic Photographs, Sarah Casto

Historical research reveals that two commercially produced photograph albums in the collection of the Buffalo and Erie County Public Library contain cyanotype contact prints and gelatin silver photographic reproductions of stereo views made by Buffalo photographer Charles L. Pond. The stereo views were cut in half and pasted as individual images in each album. The manufacture and degradation mechanisms of cyanotypes are explored, with experimental aqueous treatments of cyanotypes including deionized, alkaline, and hydrogen peroxide water baths and light bleaching. Results are evaluated using spectrophotometry and x-ray fluorescence spectroscopy (XRF) analysis. No correlation between color change and change in iron …

The investigation and treatment of the seventeenth century volume will address the common problems that arise when two texts are bound as one. It will include an overview of seventeenth century blind-stamped bindings prevalent at that time, and how the binding structure and decoration interventions reveal the owner’s intentions. The BECPL imprint will also be compared to other imprints from various nearby libraries. In 2012, pieces from a set of Japanese samurai armor from the Buffalo History Museum were brought to the Art Conservation Department for treatment. The armor consists of a face mask, shin guards and saddle stirrups containing many organic and inorganic materials, such as lacquered metal and wood, metal inlay, leather and dyed silk. The materials and fabrication methods, with an emphasis on the, lacquer and its substrate materials, were investigated through technical analysis and the research of Japanese armor in an effort to establish provenance and a treatment protocol. Interpreting Thonet: The Conservation Treatment And Analysis Of A Gebrüder Thonet Bentwood Rocking Chair, Paige Schmidt

A Gebrüder Thonet bentwood rocking chair owned by a private client was treated and analyzed. A custom mold was built in order to reconstruct the chair’s missing backsplat, which was created out of bendable plywood and beech veneer. Araldite AV 1252 epoxy putty was used to fill major losses and unoriginal tack holes. In addition to inpainting fills and replacement componenets, large areas of stripped and sanded finish were compensated with dewaxed shellac and acrylic emulsion paints. The wood was determined to be beech (Fagus) via wood identification using polarized light microscopy (PLM). Cross sections of the finish were examined …

The 17th century Italian drawing St. Andrew Before his Cross, by Francesco Albani, was studied and treated as part of an ongoing collaboration between the Buffalo State Art Conservation Department and the Allen Memorial Art Museum in Oberlin College. Through the technical study of the piece, the materials employed by the artist were identified. It was determined that Albani used the following media to render the image: graphite, sepia ink, and white lead paint in areas of highlights. The Texas Forestry Museum in Lufkin, Texas is the only forestry museum in the state. It preserves artifacts and educates visitors about Texas’ forest industry history. The museum has a Sawmill Town History Wing that is outdated and in need of a refreshing exhibit design based on current best practices. Using a previous museum audit as a guide, the new exhibit will have better flow, panel aesthetics, content, and interactive elements. By creating a new exhibit, the museum is better able to educate and entertain the visitors about Texas’ forest industry history.

Analysis And Conservation Of Portrait Of A Young Man, Formerly Attributed To Édouard Manet, Becca Goodman

A painting that was formerly attributed to Édouard Manet, was researched, examined, and technically analyzed. Imaging techniques revealed a hidden inscription in the background that places the painting in Paris in the late 19th century. Scanning Macro-X-Ray Fluorescence Spectroscopy (MA-XRF), Optical Microscopy, Scanning Electron Microscopy-Energy Dispersive Spectroscopy SEM-EDS), and Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) confirmed that no anachronistic pigments, media, or materials were used in the work. The painting was separated from its warped backing board and mounted to a new secondary support. Overpaint was removed to reveal the original inscription.

Magura Cave, north-western Bulgaria, possesses valuable rock-art paintings made with bat guano and dated from the period between the Eneolithic and Bronze Ages. Since 2008, the Art Gallery is closed to the general public in order to protect the paintings from vandalism, microclimatic changes caused by visitors and artificial illumination, and the consequent growth of fungi and phototrophs. Nevertheless, some tourist visits are allowed under the supervision of cave managers. This study provides the first scientific report on cultivable fungal assemblages dwelling different substrata in the Art Gallery.
